Q & JAMES

Written by Martin Eden

Has James Marsters got any tattoos? Has he seen the Grudge yet? And, perhaps most importantly, who does he think would win – the cavemen or the astronauts?

The man himself provides answers to all these and more, as we posed some special, quick-fire questions to him !

Q: Which show do you think had the better finale, Buffy or Angel?

A: Hmm. It’s difficult. You know, you’re tempting me to take a criticism on a show that was very good to me – I’m going to have to criticise one of them. What I will say is that I think the ending of Angel was fabulous. It was simple and it was clean and dramatic and thematically satisfying.
If the show’s theme was about redemption, then whether Angel lives or dies isn’t a question anymore. The question is: has he redeemed himself by the time he left our living rooms, and the answer is yes. And so I thought that was enormously satisfying.

Q: Have you seen the The Grudge [starring Sarah Michelle Gellar] yet?

A: No, I have not actually – I haven’t had a chance. I don’t normally go to movie theatres because that’s a place where I have to sit down for long periods of time, and I tend to get recognised. I can go and try and be a normal person, but I have to keep moving. So I’ll have to wait for the DVD for that.

Q: What would be your dream role? Would it be a remake of something?

A: I know it’s already been re-made, but I’d love to play the character of Paul in Dune.

Q: Which Season Five Angel episode do you think saw the best development of your character?

A: “We were pretty much plugging in the character we’d developed and finding out which parts of him would be appropriate to the series. They were just trying to figure out how to fit me in.

“Damage” was good. That was Steve DeKnight’s episode, his first directing job.

Q: Do you and David Boreanaz have any plans for a joint venture – in movies or TV – outside of the Buffy/Angel-verse?

A: It would have to be after I’ve done another role after Spike. Then that would be a good time. And, frankly, if the material is right I would love to. I was thinking about this – David is one of about 10 actors I’ve worked with in Hollywood., that if I do something different, something improvisational – like if, I do something different with my eyes – he’d really come to the ball. That when you can really act.

Q: How do you rate David Boreanaz’ performance as the director of the “Soul Purpose” episode?

A: David was one of our best directors of the season. The crew came up to me and said, “James you have to pressure the producers to give us David back”. Late in the season, when you’re tired and you get someone who doesn’t know us it can fry us. Fifty people came up to me in the crew and said, “You’ve got to make that happen”. We asked David and he was like, “Mmm, it’s hard work!” You’re carrying a show and then you direct, too. But I’m serious. [He was] a dream.

Q: Have you got any tattoos?

A: None, only scars, Scars tell a much better story than any tattoo.

Q: What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to do on Buffy or Angel?

A: Strip naked wearing only a sock in front of a crew who stood and laughed at me.

Q: Which Buff/Angel episode are you most proud of?
A: Hands down, the Buffy musical episode [“Once More, With Feeling”] Sheer brilliance.

Q: Have you ever seen a part played by another actor that you thought, “Wow, I wish that could be me”?

A: The first guy who ever totally rocked me was John Savage in The Deer Hunter.

Q: What’s the best bit of gossip you’ve ever read about yourself?

A: That David Bowie and I were lovers.

Q: What is one thing you’ve never done but always wanted to do?

A: Sky-dive.

Q: What was your first role on stage?

A: It was in fourth grade – I was Eeyore – and I Had to go up onto the stage and I Kept tripping up because the stage had these funny steps, I remember thinking I did really well and I really liked the experience.

Q: What was it like doing the scene in Buffy when she was invisible and you were both in bed?

A: There was a lot of talk about how I should be doing the push-ups, because, the way I was doing them, they didn’t look like push-ups at all, and they thought it was way too much! So we changed that…

Q: What would you write or say in your own obituary?

A: ‘Produced theatre, did a TV show, tried hard. Did some music.’

Q: Do you think our spirits pass over when we die, and would you or have you ever attended a sйance?

A: I think we’re in the middle of something much more beautiful and complicated than we realise, which we don’t really have the ability to perceive. In the end, I have to admit that I don’t really know what is to come. I hope that some part of this experience lives on.

As far as sйances are concerned, I read a book years ago where the thesis was that there are three things, that you cannot get over in life – death, toil and ignorance of the future. These are the things that you have to say we can’t get through in your life. People have been telling each other that they can get over these things. And so I Might attend a sйance and I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be real but I would be very reasonable about it.

Q: If you could play any famous character from the opposite sex from books, plays, TV cartoons, who would it be and why?

A: I so like being a guy…nothing against being a girl! Lady Bracknell?

Q: Is it true that you paint in your spare time?

A: Yes, I do still life, which is the easy one! But I do exteriors, too. I paint plants. The main thing with painting is that it’s an interpretation of how beautiful the world is.

Q: Did you ever wish you looked like someone else?! If so, who?

A: I’ve always like my looks but I’d have like to have had straight hair, that’s about it.

Q: How did you manage to get through filming the “Smile Time” episode without laughing?

A: It was very simple – for me, it was my job to laugh uncontrollably!

Q: Would you ever appear as a panto dame?

A: Sure, that would be cool. That would be fun. I would need a really, really, really good director!

Q: What book are you reading at the moment?

A: I can’t finish the third Bourne book. I read the first two, and now I’m on the third one, and I just don’t care any more!

Q: What were your first thoughts when you saw yourself as a vampire?

A: “Oh Jesus!” (Laughs) They glued this appliance with high-industrial glue, and some of these glues sting bad. And often they glue around your eyes and it could be dangerous. I liked how I looked. I had this stupid idea that when my girlfriend came to the set, she would think it was hot, but she took one look at me and she was like, “Oh my God, get away from me!”

Q: If you could choose in the beginning of your life to live as a human or live as a vampire what would you choose?

A: Human, definitely.

Q: Do you know what ‘effulgent’ means and can you use it in a sentence?

A: Effulgent. (Starts reciting poem from Angel finale). Radiant!

Q: Who is your favourite Star Trek character and why?

A: Spock ! Spock was a character that they didn’t expect much out of, but they found out that through that character they could re-examine their theme or they could do a variation on it.
The show seemed to be this very hopeful thing – getting over where we are now and coming to a time where we cold be showing the best of ourselves.
Looking at the journey of how to get there. They had to ask what is it to be human in the first place? And that was really what gave it a ground, underneath.
It was just one of those things where you cook up a bunch of characters and one of them makes you think, ‘I can really get my teeth into that person there’. I think Spike is a little bit the same way. He was able to take the theme and expand it.

Q: What sort of comedy do you enjoy most?

A: I like stuff that laughs at society. Doctor Strangelove is one of my favourite films. And it’s scary, too.

Q: Who actually won – the cavemen or the astronauts?

A: Cavemen! Fred said it on her deathbed, ma! She said cavemen! They have to pick small humans to be the astronauts because they have to fit in the capsule. It’s not going to be big, strapping astronauts going after these Neanderthals, it’s going to be pee-wee humans.
