Busy Doing Everything! by Natalie Clubb

James Marsters is an actor that's in demand - and he's certainly been keeping himself busy since we last spoke to him. With a sellout UK and Australian tour under his belt in 2005, James went on to secure a recurring role on Smallville's fourth(?) season as villain Milton Fine AKA Brainiac, then returned to the UK to stage his one-man show James Marsters: Words & Music. The show saw James performing his own adaptation of his favorite Shakespeare play, MacBeth, plus an acoustic concert to great acclaim.
More recently, the popular actor completed filming on the new psychological thriller/horror from Shoreline Entertainment. Starring alongside Jolene Blalock (T'pol in Star Trek: Enterprise) and Tony Todd (Candyman), Shadow Puppets casts James as one of eight people who wake up in an abandoned asylum, with no knowledge of how they got there. However, they soon learn that they're victims of an experiment, and that escape won't be easy, as a vicious creature stalks them from the shadows....
In a recent post on his official website, www.jamesmarsters.com, James Talked about working on his latest film project, which is due for release later this year. "Filming Shadow Puppets went really well," he said. "I have a good feeling about it. Everyone was great to work with. I wrecked my neck on the last day of filming, but that comes with the territory."
With a second solo album in the works, more concerts and convention appearances planned for this year, and rumors still rife about the Spike TV movie happening, it looks as though we're going to be hearing a lot more from our favorite peroxide vamp in the next few months. It would seem that there really is no rest for the wicked....
We caught up with James at the UK Collectormania 7 event to hear what he had to say about making out with Sarah Michelle Gellar, his most embarassing moments, and appearing naked on Buffy, to name just a few things.

James on....
On-set relationships....

"I decided a long time ago to never get an intimate relationship off a set, it blows up in your face every time. So, we had a lot of pretty actresses [on Buffy and Angel] with a lot of guys around at all times, and I was the one guy who wasn't. So everyone tried to make me all the time, but it never happened.

His first professional acting job....

"It was The Tempest, stripped naked."

His bedroom....

"[There are] no pictures of me. It looks like someone who hasn't unpacked for five years. In all honesty, there are a lot of boxes around and the bed is right there. The bed is pretty much the temple of the room, with all these big pillows and great blankets and everything, and the rest is all boxes. It's a place where I go and crash."

His favorite chilhood hero....

"Bruce Lee. When I was growing up, he was doing the Karo thing, but he had a humor and a sense of fun and a sense of 'I'm definitely going to kick your ass, but I don't want to have to go there.' And that struck me as a very manly thing to be - he's going to keep the peace. Spike is Kato, really, or trying to be."

Buffy and Angel cast members....

"My favorite actor to work with was Alexis Denisof [Wesley]. Alexis is twice the actor I am, and I've read too much Shakespeare not to know that with absolute brutal clarity. Anyway, he would be the guy I would want to tour with in a two-man show, and I would only hope that I could keep up with him."

Once More, With Feeling....

"When the musical came out, the whole cast was freaking out. When the musical was introduced, nobody thought Joss could write music, like, come on dude! He played this little tape of him playing piano, which he really can't do very well, and his wife singing, which she's pretty good at, and we're all like, 'what are you doing to us?' And Sarah wasn't a professional singer, and to her credit, she stepped up and did it, and everyone else freaked out. The only one to get away with not singing, interestingly enough, and they still have to explain why, was Willow. Joss absolutely screwed everyone to the floorboards to get them to sing, but she got off. I'm still wondering what that was about. But I was exempt as well, because I was already singing in the clubs since I was 13. I read the script, and I was totally comfortable."

The single most embarassing moment of his life....

"Being naked on Buffy at any time, because basically, I was always in a sock, and Buffy, if you'll remember, was always in a muffler or gloves, as if she was really making a joke out of it. Also, Sarah is a good person and a good actor, but she does have a humorous side, and she would make fun of me all the time. So it became everyone's nightmare where you have to show up naked for work with everyone laughing at you, and you repeat that day after day for six months. I never used to have a problem with being naked in front of people, but now I have been taken to the limit with my ability to deal with that, and now when people say take your shirt off, I want to run."

Whether he preferred making out with Juliet Landau or Sarah Michelle Gellar....

"Juliet. Sarah I respect, I like her a lot, she's like a sister to me, but going through 17 hour days, it's like war, and the enemy is time, and in order to work with Sarah and enjoy myself, I put her into the psychological category of my little sister who drives me crazy sometimes, but I love her anyway. And then they made me kiss her, and that was weird, so I have to say, some of those scenes are hot and everything, but I'm thinking, 'I'm kissing my sister.' But Juliet is the same kind of actor I am, which is nothing is too far for her. Her commitment level is absolutely off the charts, just like mine, so I always felt there was a part of my character that I couldn't get to without her on the set. All the really nasty bits, all that stuff never really happened without her on the set. Juliet Landau, she's a great actor."

Getting nervous before going on stage....

"After being a professional actor for a while, your only problem is boredom. You become so comfortable in front of an audience that you can find yourself just kind of phoning it in. It doesn't happen on set. I used to get really nervous for Ghost of the Robot performances because most of the material I didn't write, and it was either out of my vocal range, or not really what I was feeling, so I didn't feel sincere singing the words. But now that I'm singing my own stuff, I feel very comfortable."
