Статья в Melbourne Herald-Sun

На Спарклях появилась перепечатанная с небольшими сокращениями статья из Melbourne Herald-Sun. В основном - перепевы уже известного, но кое-какие абзацы весьма любопытны.

Here's a type-up of the interview in the Melbourne Herald-Sun (Wed 31/3/04) Guide:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"MARSTERS CLASS
Spike the vampire tells Darren Devlyn he isn't really sorry to be spiked.

Born in the remote logging town of Greenville,in northern California, james Marsters knew from the age of nine that he wanted to be an actor.

His childhood instinct seems to have served him well.

Marsters, who has reprised his "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" role of Spike for the Channel 7 gothic drama "Angel", has carved a reputation for superbly textured performances on stage and screen.

but Marsters, son of a church-minister father and social-worker mother, says there have been times his life seemed out of control.

The actor, who made his debut as Eeyore in a fourth-grade production of Winnie the Pooh, says the only way he could achieve equilibrium in his private and professional lives was by seeking therapy.

Eloquent and friendly when he arrives on the Los Angeles set of "Angel" for a chat, Marsters smiles benignly when asked if he's happy to explore his dark past.

"Which period are you talking of? There have been many of them," he says running fingers through his platinum blond hair.

"I have had many, many times in my life when I was not happy, and I was hanging out with people who were interested in creating chaos and violence and I was, too."

"I never hurt anybody that didn't willingly enter into those kinds of situations. We didn't roll any old ladies or any innocent people. We protected our turf. I did that out of choice, not out of necessity, which makes me very ashamed in hindsight. I think I needed to do that, to try to find myself, I guess. That's a long time ago now. I'm better now."

Marsters, who wears a scar on an eyebrow after a scrape with a mugger in New York, says he broke with his past life when he decided he wanted a guilt-free conscience.

Along with therapy, acting allowed him to find redemption.

"If you do that kind of thing (mess with gangs) eventually things will happen that you have a hard time reconciling.

"Macbeth talks about this, about having to cut yourself off from your own feelings to continue to do this (cause havoc). You either do that or you recoil from it. You say, 'I don't want to do this any more', and that's what happened to me. Things started to happen that I really couldn't live with. That's as clear as I'm going to be about that right now."

Marsters is in good spirits considering that he has just learned that the series of "Angel" he is shooting will be the show's last.

He cannot deny, however, that saying goodbye to Spike will leave quite a void in his life.

"Oh, believe me, Spike is the best role I've ever had," Marsters says of thevampire with a soul whose presence is intrerrupted by inexplicable vanishing acts.

"Spike is a better role than Macbeth. He's a better role than Hamlet. However good Shakespeare was, he had only 3 1/2 hours to talk about any given human being. Spike has had years."

Is Marsters, deep down, bitter about the show's demise?

"No. I used to produce theatre in chicago and Seattle and I hated having actors come up to me asking, 'Why haven't you cast me yet?'

"I'd have cast them twice already last year and they'd tell me, 'I need more work'. I'm not going to 'dis' on (the producers of Angel), who gave me gainful employment for years, just because they don't want to keep employing me."

If there's an upside to the end of "Angel", it's that Marsters will finally be able to stop bleaching his hair.

Not only has the weekly dyeing of his locks been a painstaking process, it has almost certainly stopped Marsters from winning roles in other TV and film productions.

The actor, who discovered that adding seven packets of artificial sweetener to bleach helped to take the sting out of the experience, says his hair colour ensured that he was considered only for roles as drug dealers, rock stars and vampires.

"That's just too limiting. I'm really looking forward to meeting with agents, getting normal hair again and going out and starting to meet people - because I really haven't done that in a long time."
--------------------------------------------------------------
That's the gist of the article. They have a big pic of James but it's an older one from season 5 or 6 of Buffy in his old crypt, in blackand white.
