Новичок, спасибо!

Меня порадовал диалог фанов со Стивом Химбером: "А что, это гомоэротический форум?" - "Нет, там только про вампиров-геев".

I'll leave the main Q&A reporting to Helcat, but I just HAD to post this...

Spangel was brought up. paraphrasing James here.."That one Time..yeah, I was tired, I did the scene, then realised what I had said..Oh man, I'm gonna hear about THIS one..So tell me, is the Gay guy thing the same with you Ladies, as the lesbian thing with guys?" (the room exploded in a resounding YES)

James' Q & A was highly entertaining as usual. At the end, Steve announced a silent auction and his contribution is a picture where 'Mr. Marsters is affectionately tweaking my nipple.' James looked at the picture and said something like 'you look kind of mad that I'm touching your nipple' and Steve replied 'actually, I was rather titillated.'

Just back from the activities -- a few highlights:

Jane, James, and Mercedes did a commentary on 'Harsh Light of Day' which was very entertaining. Everyone had something interesting to contribute -- Mercedes said that when they were working on the episode, a wardrobe person asked James if he would prefer boxers, briefs, or a jock strap to wear during the love scene. Mercedes reports that James said 'I think I'm gonna need all three.' Jane talked about how much she enjoyed writing this episode. With all the sex in it, she said it was just like writing fanfic -- taking the characters she watched on TV and writing porn about them. I vote that we make Jane an honorary member of CDS!

James' concert was similar to last night's. He wore jeans, black trainiers, and a very nicely clingy white v-neck polo t-shirt which looked scrumptious. Also, his hair was fighting against the gel and we were getting a tiny bit of a William look. (Picture his hair in the scene during the Boxer Rebellion.)

::Very slight and general Shadow Puppets spoilers::

After the concert, they showed three 5-minute clips from Shadow Puppets. The first was, I think, the trailer. The second one was where James' character and Jolene B's character meet. The third was where they meet Tony Todd's character and find some stuff in a lab. James has a great fight yet another character. Also, some scary stuff happens. James screams like a little girl.

After the Shadow Puppets clips, we were shown James' audition for Star Trek Nemesis. Picture this: Patrick Stewart in his Starfleet uniform and James in a black tank top, rings, neckchain and the bleached hair, looking sleekly muscled and verrrrry lovely. The man had (and still has) delectable arms. The scene fairly sizzled -- I cannot imagine why they didn't choose James for this role. Maybe they didn't want Picard to have too much chemistry with himself? I had to laugh where James asked for a sample of blood. Spike and Picard in outer space. I wish there was some way this could be released for public consumption -- I'd buy a copy or ten.

ХОЧУ ЭТО ВИДЕТЬ!!!!!

OK its 7.35 and its all over. About 20 of us are in our normal spot in the outside bar.

It's been great and you'll get the full details and snaps when we get home.

A few tidbits

Brainiac definitely not on SV this coming season - I had to pursue the producers back stage to get that one.

James next tour will be after he produces his new CD (bout 9 months?) and will be in the UK. So start saving ladies.

I see you've had some reports on Shadow Undies - one point, there are a few laughs and they are all in the way James delivers his lines. Biggest belly laugh - to Jolene "you look better in your underwear than I do" Well no actually!

I asked the question on distribution. The director/writer (looks about 14) is very hopeful of a cinema distribution, says he's really luck to have shoreline managing this for him. Decision should be by November.

He had been very shocked that the draft trailer had appeared on the internet - it wasn't a film then. Shreline said they had been hacked and it was really surprising that none of their major projects had been touched. "Hope it wasn't a James fan" says I. Who was I kidding.

One good question from Yoga Lady - could the fans help on encouraging a movie. Yes definitely - find the web site contact on Shoreline. And contact details will come out in the JM newsletter when appropriate

Just seen the play "Teachers" a little bizarre since they played it in perfect RP brit accents - biggest laugh, mentioning "Jimmy Sa-ville"
Second biggest - James dancing in what he said would be the worst way he could imagine - so much better than when he was actually dancing in Sue's vids.

Really well done (with two actresses), all of them playing multiple parts - and golly James looks so good on stage.

Con won the quiz and got a big hug and kiss.

The rest will follow eventually. "Удача улыбается смелым, но потом долго ржет над ними" Риша "Маггла на тропе войны"

James Q&A Saturday September 9th 2006 Queen Mary Long Beach

James congratulated everyone who dared to ask a question as the only thing he can talk about for an hour and a half at a time unless it was about politics

Q- About a picture on line showing him in a play with a beard

A- It was a real beard that he grew to try and make himself look older for a role. It was only a goatee though. He was told by the director that it looked stupid but was something his character would have done so he could keep it as the character was devoted to the Titanic.

Q – How long did it take to grow.

A- A month maybe 6 weeks.

Q – In London he said that the title of “Up On Me” was ‘ironic’. Why does he describe himself as ‘hopeless’?

A – He didn’t think it was really ironic but he’d come up with the title from the chorus line ‘You can give up on me, it’s OK it’s no thing anyway’ and hadn’t realized it could be taken any other way until he first introduced it and heard people laughing. He then realized it could be interpreted to be sexual which it wasn’t. Really the song was about the idea that at this point in his life he just didn’t know if he was a good lover. He clarified this to mean he didn’t know if he had the time to be the perfect lover because of commitments he couldn’t and wouldn’t take back.

Q – Commented that she’d enjoyed watching the GOTR concert recording earlier in the day.

A – James had heard it during his photo-ops and had been cringing and begging people to tell Steve to turn it off. He thinks live music doesn’t really stand up to recording because in a live context things are more forgivable than when recorded. When a band puts out a live album you know they’re really good.

Q – About the “Button Down Vandals” song and what he was doing musically at the time he wrote it.

A – He had been an ‘ancillary’ member of the band “The Vandals” in Modesto when he was 16-17. He’d go up on stage and play with them when he was around. Mostly they did covers – Ramones and The Clash particularly. Gordon Hart (who co –wrote Button Down Vandals) was also not a band member either. He didn’t really remember what else they did as it was so long ago but there might have been a Cars cover too. They were just a group of geeks who formed a rock band.

Q – Did people really think he’d end up in jail as a kid?

A – The band was named that because to an extent they were vandals. They liked to break into places, the more security the better. However the thing was to do so in a way that no one could tell you’d been there and not to damage anything. They’d break in to churches but be very respectful and just sit and talk quietly then leave. He laughed about using ropes to climb down from ceilings. At their school they also would graffiti on one area of plain wall quotes from philosophers such as Theroux or the Dali Lama. They’d then be made to paint over them which amused them as they found it funny that it was seen as bad to exposed to things the Dali Lama had said. They’d thought it wasn’t a big deal but the school nearly called the police about it.

Q- Does he believe in love at first sight?

A – Yes, but then you have 18 months to figure out if you were right or not because it took that long for the endorphins to wear off.

Q – What would he cook for a romantic dinner?

A – Stuffed corned game hen, simple salad, a nice juice combination including passion fruit and dessert would come later.

Q – Perfect romantic evening

A – Some discussion as to whether this was for a first date or a fifth date, eventually went with 5th date. A long drive down to Santa Barbara with good conversation, a picnic on the beach, then a nice hotel for a shower, then dinner and then nature, and then late room service for pancakes at 2am. Finally going to sleep at dawn.

Q – Stupidest thing he’d done for a girl.

A – Given her a 1955(?) Mustang and not taken it back when she broke up with him.

Q – What does he know now that he wishes he could have known at 25?

A – That he is a good person and accepts himself more. He thinks for much of his life he was just trying too hard but wasn’t really comfortable in his skin. He mentioned that the son of his director for Teecher’s was like that even though he was only in his 20s which was cool.

Q – What would Spike have been like as a puppet?

A – (Much laughing) He thought Spike would have been a lot more mad about being it. He probably wouldn’t have been at all interested in getting the job done and would have sulked more and probably tried to hit someone.

Q – Was Nina introduced as a love interest to distract Angel from the attraction of Spike?

A – (Much laughter) The actress who’d played Nina had been Drew’s (Drew Goddard) girlfriend and had been treated with some sexism on the set which had offended everyone. As for Spike and Angel he remembered seeing the ‘that one time’ line and he’d been tired and just done it but at the time knew he’d be hearing about it. He supposed that in 120 years he guessed you try anything once.

He then asked whether the attraction of women to the gay pairing was akin to men’s feelings about lesbian sex which the questioner said was the case. He laughed and commented that he’d learned something today.

Q – Which female Shakespeare character would he like to play?

A – Any one of them. Lady M – so he could ensure she wasn’t played as a castrating bitch. Brutus’s wife Portia for the ‘we are people too’ line. He thinks Shakespeare was a humanist which meant he didn’t see a difference between people because of race, religion or gender and so the women are not written differently than the male characters and he thinks that’s the way to do it. In Shakespeare’s time he just wrote good human beings and got really good looking transvestites to play the roles. He is too old for Juliet though.

Q – What does he dream of?

A – He rarely remembers his dreams which he’s been told is bad as it means he’s ‘blocking’ them somehow. The last one he remembers was 4 or 5 years ago and was of him falling from an exploding tower into a clear sky and then into water. He knew he lived in the tower and was surrounded by people he’d known at Julliard and was happy to be falling as it meant he was surviving. He laughed and said he had a pretty good idea what that one meant. He didn’t know how he could get his brain to remember his dreams and someone shouted out he should write them down as soon as he woke up. He said he was too grumpy in the mornings to do that.

Q – What fear does he want to conquer and how would he do it?

A – To conquer fear he thinks the best thing to do is to face it as the thing with fear is in your mind it makes something feel worse than it ever will be in reality. He talked about injuring his leg badly back in 5th grade and being unable to walk and being told he might never walk again. However, he did and once he’d got through that he thinks he wasn’t as scared of other things. Try to remember that it won’t be as bad as you think it will be. Through some time of his life he thinks he actually didn’t have enough fear and as a result did things he shouldn’t have done.

Nowadays his main fear is not knowing if he will be able to provide for his kids in the longterm. He thinks he probably will but he’d like to know for sure and he thinks this is a common parental fear. He commented that his son was doing well at school ‘He’s getting A’s….he’s going to go to Harvard!” (mocked being delighted and being terrified all at once). “I keep telling him, you do your part and I’ll do mine”.

Q – Name 3 favourite artists living or dead to meet and what criticism would he make of their work?

A – George Bernard Shaw – because he’d be funny and would make everyone mad but he couldn’t criticize him for anything.
Gloria Stein or Georgia O’Keefe
Hillary Clinton – as he thinks she’ll be president one day and would like to talk to her before she gets ruined.

Q – What actor living or dead would he like to meet?

A – Anyone of the Greek actors – to discuss what it was like to perfom in front of an audience that would go into raptures and lose control. Edmund Keane – the rock star of his day who kept the Queen waiting while he was ‘having relations’ in his dressing room. However he was supposedly the best actor ever. Thinks Keane would find him rather boring .

Q – What would he do with a month off?

A – Spend it with his kids. He’s been so busy a desert island would be good for a month on his own. Not complaining, he’s experiencing a ‘tidal wave of good’ at the moment.

Q – What would he do if he ruled the world for a day?

A – (Seemed very excited) He’d introduce hard paper trails for voting machines, impose campaign finance reform and have publicly financed campaigns so no more private people giving money to politicians. If that happened he thinks the rest would follow and he’d not have to do much more. He then mentioned introducing nationalised health care. (Later on child abuse was mentioned and he said he’d add ridding that from the world to the things he’d do).

Q - About the bridges in his songs.

A – Bridge’s are hard. He’s not very good at writing them so they’re always simple/not there as he can’t figure them out and isn’t sure where to go with them.

Q – Who would play him in a movie of his life.

A – Someone with a lot of excess energy. Joaquin Phoenix.

Q – What have been his most challenging roles?

A – Meaning the ones he sucked in the most? Toby Belch from “Twelfth Night” when he was at Julliard. He was 19, looking like he was 14 playing a 60 year old alcoholic in a foam suit. (Did an impression of his bad Toby Belch.) He’d since been told they cast him as it so he would fail. He was bad in most things he did at Julliard because he didn’t trust himself. Also a Gorky play where everyone was depressed ( did a Russian accent). Again it was done in college and he was too young. He also sucked as Medeved (?sp). Talked about the problems with planning too much rather than doing what feels right.

Now he knows he can suck on stage and be good and he’s better at knowing how not to suck. He thinks it’s great for actors to have had stage time so they know they can be interesting on stage.

Q – Favourite stunts on Buffy and Angel

A – The wire stunt in “Destiny”. He thinks there must be an amusement ride like it but he’s never found it. Great fun and wonderful to be trusted to do it. On Buffy setting himself on fire even though he hurt himself badly. Again he liked to be trusted to do it and no one knew he hurt himself. He likes it when things are actually dangerous.

Q – What accent was he going for with Milton Fine and when would he use his own natural accent?

A – He was trying to make him less a blowhard as on the page he was somewhat stuck up and he wanted to make him more casual and likable so he’d be a professor you could like. To do the language he ended up using a transatlantic accent that he’d learned at Julliard which is what American actors use for Shakespeare.

After much thought and some audience suggestions he concluded that “Simon” was probably the kind of part he’d use his one accent for as Simon was just a goofy guy.

Q – What does he think of adaptations of Shakespeare?

A – Fine as Shakespeare took most of his plots from other sources but if you just take the plots and rework the settings you shouldn’t call it Shakespeare and it should be called something else. To be Shakespeare it needs to have the words and should be set when Shakespeare set it.

Q – About reading the audio books.

A – He tries to think of it as just reading to himself or his kids. The thing to do is not plan and go through it as the audience is going through it. If he messes up they can always retake it. When you read aloud you need to look ahead 5 words and trust that you mouth can keep up. That way you can tap in to the emotion of the story. He finds he can get really caught up in them. Microphones and cameras want the emotion rather than your plan. Without a microphone it’s all about shouting loud enough to be heard (the latter said without the microphone).

Q – What would he have liked to talk about with Bobby Comfort?

A – His childhood as he thinks Bobby was mistreated by his mother but that is glossed over in the books. He wasn’t sure Bobby would want to talk about that. He’d also ask where the money is. He talked about the way Bobby was viewed as a criminal and that they’d had a Bhuddist on the crew of the movie who’d tried to explain to James how actually what Bobby did was a good thing.

Q – Is there a double standard about how Spike is viewed as a bad boyfriend and how characters like Faith are viewed?

A – Thought for a while and agreed it was a double standard. He wanted people to be attracted to him because he wanted a career. However, it didn’t fit the theme. He thinks people make the mistake of thinking they can change people for the better if you love them. But he thinks if a man can be mean to everyone around him he will be mean to his girlfriend too. On Buffy they thought of themselves as subversive artists undercutting clichés but he was playing a bad boy who was also very romantic and would do anything for his girlfriend which was a stereotype and one he wasn’t comfortable in the end. However, it wasn’t addressed with the female characters, because Harmony was bad too.

Q – Would he go blond again?

A – Yes, he thinks he had enough of a role on Smallville to show he could do brown haired roles so now he would be OK doing blond again. He just didn’t want to be stereotyped as the shock blond hair roles as they’re always rock stars or drug addicts.

Q – What age can you introduce Shakespeare to kids at and which play should you start with.

A – Find a good performance that is fun to watch. Don’t start with reading the plays do that once the child has seen it on stage and has got to see what it’s about. A good production is one you can sit back and just enjoy like watching Law and Order. Midsummer Night’s Dream is good as the children always seme to like the man being turned into a donkey. He thinks Dr. Sseuss is a great lead up to Shakespeare as it introduces the idea of language as a fun thing and rhyming patterns.

Q – About the song Baby Blue he’d sung the last night.

A – Stressed it was a cover of a Keb Mo song and not one he’d written but he wanted to end the show with a benediction.

Q – Asked about his productions of “Life is a Dream”.

A – It was a play he did first in Chicago and then did again with his own company in Seattle. In Seattle they had a guy who’d done his PhD on the play and did a retranslation for them as he said one of the roles (the mentor) was hacked about in other translations. The translator was great but carried round great guilt because he had been a bully as a child.

Q – About the tattoo in the song Katie.

A – He indicated the Dad tattoo was across the nape of her neck and she had her hair in a short bob so it was visible. He’d told her he thought it was cool which she’d seemed surprised by. He then asked her if the guys didn’t like it and she just gave him a look…

Q – About his thoughts on his character in Winding Roads

A – He was a nice guy but the film wasn’t about him and the guy probably lacked ambition and wouldn’t be a great conversationalist but would have been a good father.

Q – How to deal with writer’s block

A – Do something else creative. When he gets stuck on a song he goes and writes a poem or draws or rehearses a play. It’s important not to stop being creative at all as then you’ll not be able to get back into the flow. He said that as a writer he thinks you should consider what you write as brilliant at the time you write it. Admits he rarely feels that.

Q – Did he like to dance and the role of alcohol in dancing.

A – He loves to dance but can understand why some people find it easier after drinking as it stops you worrying about looking goofy. Mentioned he’s currently not drinking. He will be showing us an example of very bad dancing in the play the next night.

Q – How did he come to do Teechers.

A – His ex-wife would get copies of all the plays being produced in the US, England, Australia and Canada and if she liked them she’d hand them on to him. She hadn’t been sure about Teechers but they did a reading of it and found it to be really funny as well as having a serious underbelly. He considers it a ‘festival play’ because you only need a small cast, very little set and few technical requirements and it’s a real crowd pleaser. The conceit is it’s a play being put on by three highschool students so it can’t have a big set. Another such play would be “Kvetch” by Steven Berkoff about a couple trying to have a good time but can’t and the action keeps stopping for the characters to give their inner monologues about how anxious and miserable they are.

Q – About his name and his son’s name

A – He was named James Wesley because his mother wouldn’t let his father name him exactly the same name. His father being James William. He’d wanted to call his son something ordinary like John so he wouldn’t get teased. He thinks there are only about 7 male names for people of his generation (John, Dave, James…). Now he realizes that children are more likely to be teased if they have one of those traditional names. However, his wife had been coming up with very strange names and in the end they’d chosen Sullivan because it was a name that had been around for a long time and they’d been watching Ken Burns’s “Civil War” which included a letter written by a soldier called Sullivan before being killed in battle.

Q – What scares him in a horror movie?

A – Fear of the unknown, keeping the characters and the audience in the dark as much as possible.

Q – Is he ticklish and where?

A – Yes, but pretends not to be – particularly tummy, knee and back of neck. Doesn’t like to be tickled.

Q – What is the nicest thing a fan has given him

A – He doesn’t think that fans are given the time to really get the chance to do anything great for him. He is very aware we’re always being rushed because of the need to be out of a room by a certain time. Probably that they trust him to bring their kids to meet him because it shows they think he won’t hurt them.

И - отчет Helcat о просмотре:

I've put together my best stab at the commentary for Harsh Light of Day. It isn't complete by a long way but contains all the bits I could recall. Mercedes didn't always talk into a microphone so I missed much of her part

It took them a while to get sorted as they started showing “The Freshman” which the audience recognized as the wrong episode but Jane, James and Mercedes seemed oblivious. Eventually the right episode was found and things got going. There were issues figuring out where to put chairs to allow people to see the screen but also not have their backs to the audience. James joked it was sort of like Mystery Science Theatre. James also managed to knock his coffee over while rearranging his chair.

During the teaser James mentioned that the band was Four Star Mary and praised them. He also talked about the problems SMG had with the guy playing Parker because Parker was a smoked right before his kissing scene with Sarah and she was really annoyed.

Jane said that Parker was doomed because he was Buffy’s rebound guy and thus there was no hope for him. The whole episode is based on Buffy not being ready to move on but trying to persuade herself she is.

Jane commented that they were able to do the Harmony/Willow joke because it had never been fully established that Harmony had died even though they’d seen her being bitten. They joked a little about Willow’s coat which James seemed to think belonged to Oz. Mercedes said she found the vampire head make up helped as she felt silly going to bite someone looking normal.

When they start the Anya/Xander scene James talks about how the juice box gag was his favourite in the show and Jane said she knew it’d work because she’d done it herself. James then did his best to recall the lines in the Xander/Anya scene quoting several fairly accurately I think too. X- “What are you talking about?” A- “I’m talking about having sex with you; I’ve said it about a dozen times.”

James talked about how in this season he was nearly fired due to remarks made in the makeup trailer. (He at first said that happened earlier in the season but later corrected himself that it was a later episode.) Mercedes hadn’t heard about this and James said it was because he’d been making jokes about wearing a Hawaian shirt. Jane said they had been worried because they’d heard that James was really unhappy on the show. James said he’d checked with the whole crew as to whether he’d been acting miserable and they’d said he’d seemed fine though they thought maybe his cat had died. James then repeated his Urkel anecdote (“In the theatre when you sign up to play Hamlet you know your playing a Dane who kills his uncle, when you sign up to play Macbeth you know you’ll be murdering people with knives but in Hollywood you sign on to play a cool vampire and you end up playing Urkel.”) Jane said that was exactly what they were getting worried about. James said that the makeup room should be an actors sanctuary.

According to Jane she’d originally named Parker “Harper” but because they already had Harmony in the episode they needed to change it as it was confusing on the board. She had to provide Joss with a list of alternate names which all were like Harper but not Harper. James joked that they were clearly wedded to the arper/arker sound in the name.

During the next Xander/Anya scene James continued to quote Xander and Anya dialogue. Jane quoted her favourite joke in the scene which Anya talking about putting Xander behind her, but she was thinking of starting off face to face. She didn’t realize it was a joke when she came up with the first line but then got it when she thought of the follow up. James praised how straight Emma was able to play her lines.

Jane highlighted the scene in which Buffy stands outside her dorm room with Parker discussing whether it was wood or wood veneer. And James seemed to remember the angry puppy remark. Jane explained that they had explained at the end of the episode how Buffy realized that her actions with Parker were all about her not being over Angel but because the episode was long it was cut. She thinks had they kept that in they’d have had less letters asking why they’d made Buffy a slut. James said he felt sorry for Riley because he was the sacrificial lamb. Jane agreed and said he was the rebound boyfriend and you just knew he “wasn’t going to be the one true vampire”.

James felt he was very mean to Harmony in the episode. Jane hadn’t thought Harmony would be so sympathetic. They assumed everyone would side with Spike but Mercedes made Harmony so appealing and sweet and moving it came off so much better. It is the best thing possible when an actor can do that.

Jane said after her first draft Joss told her he wasn’t falling in love with Parker so she had to re-write it to make Joss Whedon fall in love with Parker. So she gave him more jokes, particularly self aware jokes.

During the party scene James recalled that it had been the first real day for him shooting with Sarah. She was joking and saying ‘this is my show, my show, not yours James’ and he answered ‘Not yet’. He’d meant it as a joke because she’d set it up so easily but all the crew were shocked and there were gasps. He told Sarah he was joking and thinks he spent the next year and a half digging himself out of that. He thought Sarah really believed he intended to take over a show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Audience cries out that he did which James firmly denied.)

They all loved the juice scene and Jane said there’d been much debate as to whether the dress Anya wore could come off as fast as it did on the show. James said the rule with Buffy was that if it was funny it was in regardless. Jane was relieved they didn’t put sleeves on the desk as that wouldn’t have worked.

Mercedes discussed the difficulties she had saying “Gem of Amarra” and Jane said she was trying to avoid the hard sounds they usually used in demonology. According to James the usual rule was whoever said the word first determined the pronounciation so they always had to check if it had come up before or not in case they had to learn a new pronounciation.

We get to the shirtless scene, and James says this was back when he was a cheap whore. Jane says she was always bothered that the blue veins they painted on the vampires didn’t show up as clearly as they should on screen so she had Harmony reference them. James mentioned they always put lots of scars on him as well. During the sex scene James and Mercedes both hid their faces and looked embarrassed.

Back to Xander/Anya. James said that one day he thinks Nick Brendon will become the next Jerry Seinfeld. He mentioned the play NB was doing and said it was excellent. Jane said all the relationships in this episode were with messed up dynamics.

Jane said the hardest of the three relationships to write was Buffy/Parker because the audience just wasn’t invested in him yet.

James mentioned that if Angel had gone another season there’d have been much more development of Harmony.

Jane discussed the oddity of dancing on television. She explained that first off they film everyone with the music playing and then repeat without music to get the dialogue so you have all these people dancing in silence.

Jane commented how the actor who played Parker had this odd habit of randomly dilating his eyes which made him come over as intermittently intense. James said that at one point he’d practiced closing his eyes slightly for menacing quality and that was the kind of things actors did. Jane found this very interesting. He also then talked about how Michael Caine also told actors to rip off anything they see that looks good. Jane recalled hearing that while we naturally alternate looking people in each eye actors on screen are told to just look at one and stick to it as otherwise they look stupid. James says if you don’t you come off looking confused then talked about the advice about running slowly towards camera to get a good shot of your face and then run fast from a camera to look better. James said he thinks the thing is mostly you worry about the technical bits of acting like standing on your mark and trust your instincts to get the rest done. Jane thinks its interesting how little writers know about what actors do. Mercedes said she hated getting the really long lines of meaningless babble from Harmony.

Jane highlighted the importance of the shot panning across Parker’s bedroom with all the clothes strewn about as it justified part of the title. James liked the shot of Buffy looking for her pants and thought it one of the most human for the character of the whole show as we’ve all done it. According to James actors do the minutiae and the writers do the rest. Jane finds it exhilarating when an actor can elevate writing and cited working with Ellen Degeneres and that actors can find things that the writers didn’t realize were in there. James said that he missed the fun of having a long running character because mostly all he had to worry about was getting on his mark and getting his lines right because it had become almost effortless as he’d stopped planning.

[Technical breakdown as the DVD projector goes blank and they move onto general chatter while it's being sorted out]

James wanted to show Spike being nasty to Harmony as he’d always been so loving to Dru “even after she picked the tall guy” over him that it made a nice contrast. Especially as it was so clearly not just about Harmony. He remembered in the scene pushing Mercedes against the wall and her asking him what was having a bad day because he was acting mean.

Mercedes answered that with her own anecdote. She had been with James when a wardrobe person had come over to discuss their first naked scene and offered James boxer-briefs, a jock strap or boxers. She thought it was a little inappropriate to have him asked in front of her but James had answered, “I’ll need all three”. James laughed and gave the famous line about “Don’t be offended if I get hard and don’t be offended if I don’t.” Then addressing the mainly female audience said it was difficult having a part of your body that is such a give away as far as where your minds at.

James went back to the terror of acting on Buffy because you never did know what was coming. Jane said the writers never really got used to Joss’s way of thinking and he’d always be surprising them, like with the idea of pairing Spike and Harmony. James felt that Joss would always try and just reverse expectations so whatever you expect would be the outcome he’ll go in the absolute reverse. Jane said part of his genius was that he thought it out in advance so would play in the misleads as early as possible. James said that at one point he’d asked Joss if subconsciously he’d written the Buffy/Riley relationship in such a way that it left things really open for Spike. Joss replied in a very sarcastic tone that maybe he had ‘unconciously’.

Jane said that for years she had a notecard on her desk that said ‘Buffy has sex dreams about Spike’ which she wanted to point out to people when Joss did decide to put Spike and Buffy together. James said he was ahead on that one too and had just spoken to David (Fury) about this as he hadn’t liked the chip he wanted to see the character choose to try to be good instead. If they kept Spike a villain he became ineffective but if he tried to be good and failed it was more interesting and Spike falling in love with Buffy did that. Though in his mind Spike would fail and go back to being evil. Jane said the chip was needed to keep Spike on a leash for a while so people would buy Buffy having a relationship with him in the first place. James never thought that Buffy would get into a relationship with Spike. Jane talked about how important it was to get both characters to that place where it could work.

James said he wished Joss would go back to TV because that plays to his strength of long interwoven plots which you can’t do in film. Jane agreed. For her the first 2 hours of a characters life aren’t the most interesting but rather the 100th or the 101st hour.

Jane said it amazes her how much time is spent discussing hair on television shows. She remembered Joss saying they would never see James’s natural hair colour on the show. She therefore didn’t think that Joss would go for it when she heard Doug Petrie’s plan to show William without the blond.

[Technical difficulties sorted out and the episode restarted]

They discussed whether Jane had said in the script that they had to use an alligator sticking plaster which she doubted though she thought she’d have said something about it being bright coloured.

Mercedes pointed out that the picture they have of Harmony in the year book is actually Mercedes’s year book photograph. There was then some discussion as to whether this was the episode that established her last name or not. Evidently for many characters last names were created just for the ‘Sunnydale Yearbook’ tie in.

All feel sorry for Buffy looking so sad when Parker doesn’t call. Jane liked that Parker was such a classic college ‘type’ as well.

With naming the gem of Amarra Jane was going for soft sounds only as most sci fi and demon stuff is full of ks and xs. James then said he’d read that the most appealing word in English to people who don’t speak the language is diarrhea which Jane found unlikely. James said he read it in Omni magazine so it must be true.

When they got to the scene with in the vault with caves Jane said that in an earlier draft the idea was that Spike would take items from Harmony one by one and stake her repeatedly to see if he’d found the right one. For instance he’d put on the tiara first and then a necklace and finally the ring. James hadn’t known that and wasn’t sure he’d have wanted to do that. (I wasn’t clear if his problem was the repeated staking or the possibility of being filmed wearing the tiara).

James talked about the stunt in which he jumps down the hole and how dangerous that was as you can hurt yourself if you catch your chin as you go down. James was amazed Mercedes had done it too though she seemed to have no memory of it.

They talked about the stuntwoman who doubled for Sarah in the episode (they called her Sonia but I’m fairly confident they meant Sophia). James thought she was as valuable to the show as himself or any of the other actors because she did so much. When she left they hired three people to replace her. James was very proud they let him do the stunt dropping her through the glass table without padding. Jane commented how while she was an excellent stunt woman she had bigger breasts than SMG. (This caused much laughter and James did his impression of Buffy turning in to stunt Buffy which words can not do justice to.) James talked about how the scene with Parker and Buffy and then Spike and Buffy was set up to give Buffy both an inner and an outer kicking. Jane wanted the scene to hurt as much as the scene where Buffy hears her father blaming her for the divorce. Jane thought Marti would have done it better and ripped the audiences hearts out more though James thought it was important not to overplay those scenes. They discussed how many girls get their hearts broken by people like Parker and James pointed out it happens to guys too. Jane agreed and said she’d read that the biggest influence on findings of gender differences in psychological research is the gender of the researcher.

Jane said they were all very disappointed it because for reasons of timing the fight was almost fully in shadow when it was supposed to be in full sunlight. They even discussed whether they could reshoot it. Joss was really angry about it, not with the actors but with the situation. James said he heard a lot about Joss being angry but had never seen him be angry. She said it was almost the kind of light vampires coped with normally though James felt it was the light that Angel could cope with but Spike would have gone up in flames.

James and Mercedes were pointing out when it was and wasn’t him in the fight scene. According to Jane if you can’t see an actors face it almost always meant it was the stunt person. James recalled that Spike brought up Angel during the fight scene. James was able to recall the ‘if you take it off we both burn’ line which he thought was very desperate of Spike. He then mimicked Spike running off. He said if Spike ever got any dignity he’d know he was on the wrong show.

They couldn’t remember what happened to the ring in the long term but the audience reminded them of the AtS crossover. James then talked about the fun of going over to torture David and how David had been in a car accident just before it and still did the scene where he was chained up for 16 hours.

Jane again said how sad they were that they cut the Buffy conversation at the end and in retrospect they should have cut some of the shady fight scene. James was mock offended that they’d cut a fight scene for mere ‘story’ issues. Jane said that at the end Joss had envisioned a big overhead shot of the three women walking which didn’t quite come off.

Спасибо Helcat!

Gough and Millar

This was a formal sit down interview with Lisa of JMLive asking all the questions.

Al Gough did most of the talking and for the most part I’ve not even tried to divide it according to who said what other than the first question.

Q – What TV they watch nowadays

MM – said his mother sent him tapes of British television shows and that was mostly what he watched

AG – was now enjoying 24, though he only started watching when it was no longer on opposite Smallville. On principle he won’t watch anything that is up against their show. He also watches Entourage.

Q – About how they got started

A – They met in film school and sold a spec script they co-wrote back when they were still in college and went from there though that first script was never made. The industry was very different back then and it was much easier to sell spec scripts than it is these days.

Q – About how they work.

A – They split duties. Al is better dealing with the executives while Miles works more with the designers. They don’t know how one person can do it all.

Q – About projects other than Smallville

A – They’ve written a script for a 3rd installment of “The Mummy” franchise which is being considered. They were reluctant to discuss other ideas they had at the moment.

Q – The origins of Smallville

A – They pitched a show about a young Lois Lane and were instead asked if they’d do young Superman. At first they were uncertain as they didn’t want to do Superboy. Miles said he hadn’t really liked the Superman movies outside of the Smallville bits. They came up with the idea of doing Clark without the cape and the flying and that developed into Smallville.

Q – The story planning process

A – At the end of each season they try and review what worked and what didn’t and plan out where to go next. As they are always being told to bring in new viewers they feel they have to re-launch the show every year. They were very concerned about the initial move to Thursday and are waiting to see how things go with the CW but are hopeful they’ll be back for at least one more season.

Q – About Chloe becoming Lois

A – They know it is what some fans would love and some writers on the show even would like to do it but it was never the plan.

Q – About their preferences in seasons

A – They said the 5th was their favourite and the 4th was the least favourite. (I think the order was 5, 2,3,1,4 but I’m not totally sure.) They thought the 4th had some excellent episodes but didn’t work as a season. They talked about how they do less well when they venture out of the DC world and dabble in other genres eg the vampire episode in season 5.

Q- Other characters they’d like to include

A – They’d love to have Bruce Wayne but they can’t because of film deals. They then mentioned a whole host of DC characters I’d never heard of and can’t recall other than Green Arrow is going to be on this season and I think they’ll also have Aquaman and Cyborg return along with Jimmy Olson.

They also enjoy bringing in actors who are linked to the Superman mythos such as Christopher Reeve and are still hoping to get Dean Caine.

Q- Issues with DC

A – It is complicated and they can’t always predict what will cause problems. For instance there were concerns about bringing on Jimmy Olson as in the comics he’s so much younger than Clark. They came up with a way to get around this including a younger Jimmy who could theoretically turn out to be the comic book one instead of the Smallville one. They thought it was rather silly but if it got the executives happy they were fine pitching it. They also had a last minute demand to see a costume for the Green Arrow the day before they started shooting. Thankfully everyone loved it but if they hadn’t they’d have used it anyway. It’s complicated by the fact that Warners doesn’t own all the characters and various estates are also involved.

Q – The part the good guys have played in Lex becoming a villain

A – They think that all the other characters have played a role in turning Lex into a villain. Jonathan Kent in particular never gave Lex a chance. Clark was repeatedly lying to Lex while for the most part Lex eventually comes clean with Clark about what’s going on.

Q – About the Belle Reve set up

A – They hadn’t planned it at the beginning but because Superman can’t kill anyone the tradition is to cart off the villains in ambulances and they decided to go with a mental hospital that could then tie in with the Luthors. They loved that Lex then ended up there and evidently Lex will have more of a link in the coming season. As for Superman not killing they do think there are a couple of iffy scenarios including one where Clark threw someone into a lake which then froze.

Q – About the killing of Jonathan Kent

A – It had certainly kept the actors on edge as everyone other than Tom and Michael weren’t sure if they would be the one to die. They needed a big moment for their 100th episode and as Jonathan died in canon they decided that was the way to go. While they bought him back in later episodes he probably won’t be back now. They had contracted the actor for the full season so they used him because they were paying him anyway but he’s no longer under contract.

Q – The Martha – Lionel dynamic

A – Martha was what stops Lionel revealing Clark’s secret as he loves her and always has. Martha can’t forget what Lionel has done but things will develop between the two.

Q – The relationship between Buffy fans and Smallville

A – They felt they’d been boycotted by a lot of Buffy fans because they were the new show that replaced Buffy after the WB cancelled it.

Q – Why they cast James as Brainiac

A – He was the only actor they’d considered for the role because they knew he could pull it off. If he hadn’t agreed to do the role they didn’t have another plan. They appreciated that he had a strong fan-base within genre but more importantly he was a great actor who could play the part well.

James had really had an impact on the show and like John Glover and Michael Rosenbaum he was an actor who brought up the other actors around him. They think James actually intimidated Michael Rosenbaum to some degree. They added that Michael is nothing like Lex, and of all their cast is the actor least like the role he plays.

Q – Why didn’t they use Brainiac more

A – They didn’t want to drag the arc out as they had in season 4 plus they have a large regular cast already. They tried to use him well in the episodes they had him for.

Q – Issues due to height

A – Most of their actresses are small so they have a lot of boxes for them to walk on to help get shots set up. One of the things that they loved about scenes between Clark and Jonathan was that the actors were of similar height. As for James being shorter, they didn’t think it mattered because he was such a strong actor that you really didn’t notice the height discrepancy in scenes.

Q – About fans being worried that Brainiac would be green

A – They were never going to make him green. They chose the Milton Fine persona as it gave the character a human side and they could make him a college professor rather than an illusionist. They always wanted him to be linked to Zod and he succeeded in doing that.

ETA: When discussing their ideas for Smallville at the start they said they ruled out the spaceship crashing because by then it would have been picked up on radar. So they went with the meteor shower to mask the arrival and the idea that meteors could create 'freaks' for Superman to battle.

Отчет Helcat о встрече с Джейн Эспенсон, Дэвидом Фьюри и Стивеном Де Найтом.

(Спасибо Helcat!)

The Writers panel included Jane Espenson, David Fury and Steven De Knight. It was great fun and the three had incredible rapport. Sadly I’m really struggling to recall all of it especially much of the banter. There was a running gag where David or Steve would name an episode they loved ask who wrote it and be amazed it was one of Jane’s episodes.

Q – About writers block

A – Both Fury and De Knight talked about how much they’d complain about how bad the scenes they’d written were and each writer would try and top the other in how badly they were feeling about their writing. In contrast Jane went for self praise so when she was uncertain about something she’d just tell everyone how great it was instead. As a rule though there wasn’t time for writer’s block the time pressure was such that they just had to get the script done no matter what.

Q – About co-writing episodes

A – Fury said he’d already answered this in his solo Q & A and I don’t recall Steve saying much. Jane said mostly it was done by dividing up the acts and that worked well because the writers would always have a very well worked out story line complete with act breaks before they went away to write. She did remember one time where she and Doug Petrie had tried a different collaborative style whereby they’d done alternate passes ie one of them wrote a draft and then the other re-wrote it. The problem was they tended just to cut out everything the other had done. David and Steve questioned why that had ever seemed like a good idea and Jane blamed it on Doug.

Q – About the Darla-Spike relationship

A – Fury felt Spike was too devoted to Dru to have been involved with Darla. There was some debate as to whether a relationship might have been possible later but as Fury kept pointing out Darla was dead by then. (Interestingly the question didn’t specify romance but that seemed to be how the writers took the question. Later another questioner filled them in that in fanfic Darla and Spike have a bad relationship because they both love Angelus. That seemed to surprise the writers.)

Q – Writing for dramas vs. writing for comedies

A – They all seemed to prefer writing alone and Jane said she can’t write with some one sitting next to her reading along and suggesting lines as some duos do. Jane talked about the way some comedies are written with all the writers sitting around throwing out lines and jokes and a script being put together that way with an assistant writing down the lines that were approved. This wasn’t a method she enjoyed and neither Steve nor Fury seemed to have worked that way.

Q – Other characters who they’d have liked to do backstory for

A – No one really seemed to have a good answer to this pointing out that Anya had been explored and as Jane pointed out a Jonathan backstory episode wouldn’t have been very interesting as it’d just be the home life of a nerd. I think Steve objected here that it would be his life story.

Q – Where would be their ideal place to live

A – Jane went first and said Sydney. Fury also said Australia and said he’d only been there last year with his family for a convention and loved it. He loved the people and the atmosphere and just about everything else he could think of. He said as a child his parents once told him they would be moving to Australia as a joke. However, he’d taken it seriously and was all excited to go. They also needed good TV writers. Steve asked if the pay was as good as in LA for writers and both Jane and Fury said no. Steve said he came from a small town in New Jersey and for him living in LA was his dream come true.

Q – About on line fan interactions with writers a good or bad thing. (I asked this question and aimed it primarily at Fury and De Knight which lead De Knight to ask if it was a penis related question)

A – Fury just loved mixing it up. He regarded it as an opportunity to get into bar fights and he’d be laughing about it all and not taking it seriously. Joss had introduced him to it on the Bronze and he thought it was great. They also discussed how Fury would be similar in the writers room and get into rows with other writers seemingly about nothing. They cited a row he had with Drew but I forget now what it was about but Fury just wouldn’t let it drop. He also recalled how he took to Steve because Steve would stir things up. Steve recalled an incident when Fury asked Drew for a pen and Steve turned to Drew and said “Are you going to take that!”Fury thought this marked him out as perfect for “Angel” and working with Tim Minnear.

Q – About which comic book character they’d like to bring to life

A – Steve talked about one he’d actually written (The Punisher?) which he’d pitched as very 1970s and dark but when he handed it in was told they couldn’t possibly make it like a 1970s movie and dark! Jane did answer but I’m blanking on her answer. Fury said “Little Dot”.

Q – Who should Joss cast as Wonder Woman

A – Fury suggested James, and was then interrupted by James asking what was going on from the upper balcony. There was discussion that he couldn’t cast a tiny woman for the role as Wonder Woman was an amazon. Someone in the audience I think suggested Gina Torres which Jane seemed to think was a decent idea.

Q – About the time scale from writing to an episode airing

A – Jane said it can be a long time citing how long it’s been since she wrote her Battlestar Galactica episode which is yet to air. However on Buffy and Angel it could be a few weeks if not days. She mentioned sometimes they’d be putting together the next days scenes for shooting and still not have a finished script. Steve mentioned how out of the blue Joss pitched them “Angel and Spike on a German submarine” with hardly any time to write the episode. They didn’t have time for any research so just took bits straight out of other films to give them background on German submarines.

Q – Complimenting on their use of Wicca on Buffy

A – None of them recalled doing any research and instead they’d just thrown it in because at some point it had been mentioned with regard to Willow and Tara. Mostly they just tried to bluff their way through and hope for the best.

Q – Did vampires change over the course of the show from simple monsters to something more complicated?

A – Fury didn’t think so; he just thought that in later seasons we got to know the vampires more but their basic nature was no different. Jane felt there had been a shift in tone from ‘monster of the week’ where the monsters were very clearly metaphors for teen age issues to more character driven episodes. She felt she was behind on that change as she was often pitching monster of the week episodes when Joss had really moved on.

Q – Was there something ‘racist’ to the idea that soulless demons should be killed while evil humans weren’t

A – Fury felt the soul was only really a big issue for vampires and they seemed to agree that other demons might well have souls. Fury’s idea was that a soul allowed a person the possibility for redemption which was not possible with a soulless vampire.

Q – About why Spike became increasingly naked as the show went on

A – Jane put it down to the increasing influence of Marti on the show. Fury commented that there was nothing wrong with naked Spike.

Q – How to deal with actors limitations – write round them or ignore them

A – Jane said on her current show they had an actor with a thick accent and were therefore writing to make sure he didn’t have any long lines to speak. However, if you had an actor who couldn’t express a range of emotions you probably needed another actor. Fury said that on Buffy one of the actresses who he would not name was unable to run so they’d use a stunt woman for any running scenes but when she did run on camera you had the funniest dailies ever. He then commented that the same actress was also unable to laugh.

Q – Something about writers’ importance

A – Steve said that writers had more power in television than they did in film and in television it was the directors who got treated like hired hands

***********************

Helcat!)

Al and Miles Q & A extra bit

Q – About how things have changed in television

A – Jerry Bruckheimer has got involved and all the movie producers have seen how much money can be made in TV so they’re all trying to develop shows now.

Q - About casting decisions that didn't work

A - Mentioned that they'd had Ian Sommerhalder (?sp) come on as a love interest for Lana and after a single episode it was clear it wasn't working. They then switched the role to one of a Lana stalker.

Writers Q & A extra bit

Q – What was he Jossverse term for the relationship between a vampire and a vampire they sired?

A – No one recalled ever having included a specific term in the show. Fury suggested siree. Jane mentioned child ‘spelled with a y or an e’ which amused both Fury and Steve. They all agreed Joss wouldn’t have liked that. There was a little discussion about the sire/grandsire situation regarding Spike and Angel. The questioner raised Andrew’s use of spawn in “Storyteller”. Jane said that was just Andrew making up his own terms and wasn’t by any means indicative of what Jossverse vampires were termed.

Jane’s Q & A

Q – Why does she report what she’s had for lunch on her blog

A – When her web person set the site up she wrote that Jane would be discussing everything from her writing to what she had for lunch and Jane just thought that was a wonderful idea and thus has been doing it.

Q – Drama or comedy

A – She loves both. However she’s just done a Battlestar Galactica script which has reinvigorated her love of drama. In drama you can also add more comedy while it’s hard to add drama to comedy. There are also very few comedy jobs at the moment and which makes it harder to break into that as most of the jobs go to writers who the studios have deals with.

Q – About her current project

A – She’s now working on a new Andy Richter project which is based on the idea that he gets mistaken for a private eye and ends up being one. It’s due for mid-season on NBC who she has a deal with.

Q – Does she prefer writing for long running or new shows best

A – The long running shows as the characters have established histories which she finds more interesting to explore.

Q – About her studying linguistics in college

A – She’d always wanted to be a writer but didn’t know how to get into the business so she’d done linguistics. While in college she heard about submitting spec scripts and started doing that and felt she was returning to her first love.

Q – What happened to “Jake in Progress”

A – It was picked up for a second season specifically to partner ‘Emily’s Reason’s Why Not’. When that show bombed on its first showing and was pulled there was no real place for Jake. It wasn’t officially cancelled though until the network announced it’s fall schedule which was odd. She also claims that because of the disaster of “Emily’s Reasons Why Not” a cable show in development had its name changed from “Emily’s Eyes” to “Angela’s Eyes”.

Q – Working in the jossverse vs. working on other shows

A – She loved working with Joss. She loved the way he developed his shows and the writers never got to the point where they could see where he would take a story. She has also loved working on Battlestar Galactica. She was told there that the creator likes to be surprised and if he likes some plot development in your script he’s prepared to change other scripts to incorporate the idea.

Q – Can a genre show be mass appeal

A – She doesn’t think so. You can get a show like Lost which has a large audience but you don’t have Lost conventions which she thinks is because it isn’t until an audience feels it’s a select group that they bond together that way.

Q – What one thing in the Buffyverse would she change if she could

A – Spike’s soul quest. They tried to be too clever and do a mislead and instead of clearly showing that Spike chose to go get a soul because of being so horrified at what he’d done it appeared as if he was tricked. She thinks that uncertainty made it much harder to redeem Spike than it should have been.

Q – How she got involved in a book of essays about Buffy

A – She was asked to write an introduction which she agreed to do and then they asked if she’d also act as editor. She is amazed by some of the analyses she reads of scripts especially when they’re of her lines as they make a lot of lines she threw in with no thought as to deeper meaning.

Q – Do things turn out on screen as she expected or does she get frustrated

A – She has no urge to direct. For her the job is done when she hands in the script, if there was a way just to hold a script up for the camera and film it she’d be happy. Mostly things come out as she anticipated and the only episode she could think of that didn’t was “Band Candy” if only because it was her first Buffy script and she wasn’t used to how things were done.

Q – Writers block

A – She doesn’t have time to get stuck so the time pressures mean you just have to press on regardless.

Q - About the big picture elements of writing vs. craft of writing

A - She keeps coming back to the craft aspect as that often takes up most of the time. When your writing for television you don't have time to worry about the big picture and being a good television writer is as much to do with knowing how to write a compact script.

Q – Plans for the future

A – She’s written a pilot which she’s really hopeful for and thinks we’d love. When asked if there might be a role for James in it she said absolutely.

David Fury Q & A (beginning only)

Q – Favourite characters to write for

A – On Buffy started out as Xander but ended up preferring characters like Spike. On Lost loved writing for Locke because Terry O’Quinn was amazing and the character was so interesting. Also liked writing for Jorge as his character was the really funny one and he did so much with the funny lines. It’s harder on 24 because it’s so plot driven. He could say Chloe because she has one or two quips an episode but mostly it’s stuff to do with the plot and what’s happening to Jack which doesn’t make for a fun character to write.

Q – Do the producers on “Lost” know the answer to all the mysteries

A – No. They have some things worked out but mostly it’s a juggling act and they decide on things as they go along to increase the intrigue and aren’t really concerned as to how they’ll explain them later.

Q – About Spike and the attempted rape scene

A – It was needed to demonstrate that unsouled Spike was not a good guy and wasn’t a good partner for Buffy. If Spike could be good just through wanting to be it undermined Angel’s story. Spike was an anomaly in the vampire world though because he somehow retained some humanity after being vamped rather like his mother.

Q – Humour in 24

A – He misses it but it really doesn’t fit into the show and they just won an emmy so clearly they know what they’re doing.

Q – About the possibilities of a 24 film

A – It’s being worked on and it wouldn’t be in real time as that would be a very long film

Q – Did he prefer acting or writing

A – He’s basically a frustrated actor. He loves having a chance to act and was grateful that he had the opportunity on Buffy and Angel.

Q – Any help on writing English roles

A – Not really. Tony Head would put them right on some things (eg you don’t spell bollocks like that) but mostly he relied on having watched Monty Python in the past. The questioner explained the meaning of starkers to him and how that changed the meaning of the scene Spike used it in. Fury asked if he had written that line, when told no, said of course he knew what it really meant and it was just ridiculous that someone could misuse it like that!

Q – Writing for the Jossverse in particular

A – Joss showed him the key was the emotional truths. Without those Lineage for example is just an episode about a bunch of ninjas and a magic stick.

Steve De Knight Q & A (beginning only)

Q – As a writer did he know the actors would struggle with Seeing Red and what as a writer can you do when that happens

A – They did know that the bathroom scene would be tough on James and especially on Sarah. He was on the set for it and thought everyone did really well with the scene. He also stressed that at this point in the show he was still very junior. He ran through the hierarchy of writers (story editor, executive story editor which both are listed in the end credits, then producer, supervising producer who go in the opening credits) so really did what he was told. Marti came up with the story and she was also a woman so he felt she knew what she was getting them in to. He reiterated the idea that it was necessary for the development of Spike to show he couldn’t really be good without a soul.

Q – How did he get into screen writing

A – He’d always wanted to do it. He got a job writing for MTV’s “Undressed” which was awful. His agent was working out of her bathtub. He wrote a spec script for Buffy which he gave to his agent who sent it on to the head of ME at the time who was one of the few people his agent knew in Hollywood. The script was about Xander getting slayer strength and through that demonstrating why slayers were women in the first place because men couldn’t deal with the power. The ME person got back to him and told him he loved the script but would have to give it to Joss and Joss hated all Buffy spec scripts. Later he got a call from Joss inviting him for a meeting (he did a very good impression of Joss during this) about possibly doing the animated Buffy series. They had a meeting at which Joss offered him a job on Buffy proper which was wonderful for Steve.

Steve De Knight and Dee Dee Bradley Q & A (end only)

Q – About James coming onto Smallville

SDK – Al Gough and Miles Millar came into the writing room and said that as he’d worked with James what did he think about James joining the show. He told them to sign the papers right away. Not only was James a wonderful actor but he also had a great love of acting and brought a real energy to the set as he so clearly loves working. He said that this was actually unusual with actors as many seem very unhappy having to be on the set. He told an old joke of how to make an actor miserable – make them a star.

DDB – Because James was offered the role without needing to audition Dee Dee hadn’t actually ever met James until this weekend.

Q – How do actors get auditions

DDB – The shows tell her what roles they need casting. She sends out a ‘breakdown’ which goes to all agents and then agents and managers contact her if they think their clients would be good. She then sees those she thinks look promising and it goes from there. She tries to throw in some unexpected options ie bringing in an actress for a male role or a black actor when the role specifies white. She noted that the role she cast for Tony Todd on Smallville was originally written for a white guy in his 30s.

Q – How to break in to Hollywood

DDB – You need someone who believes in you. By law only agents can get you work but in reality managers also do that. The most important thing is to find someone who believes in you and will work for you.

Q – Casting Smallville

DDB – It’s hard when you are so restricted by the pre-conceived ideas about the role. Clark for instance had to be played by a particular type of looking actor though they did audition some African American actors for the role.

SDK- He thought Michael Rosenbaum as Lex was interesting because he’d only seen him in comedy roles and hadn’t expected him to be so good as a villain.

Q - How much does Dee Dee know about plots for Veronica Mars

DDB – Very little, the producers are very secretive about what they have coming up

Q – Quoted Patrick Stewart saying his carreer was limited by being famous for a role on a sci fi show and a syndicated one at that.

A – Neither Dee Dee or Steve seemed to think Patrick Stewart would have any problem being cast in anything. They didn’t see that there was a bias against genre actors and really it was all to do with being a good actor or not. Steve talked about some earlier sci-fi film Patrick Stewart had done which was amazingly good.

Q – About physical and regional stereotyping in casting

DDB – They try to fight against it but it certainly does happen. Because of the process of casting a lot of decisions are based purely on looks so if producers don’t like the look of an actor they can veto the casting.

Q - John Glover said that the final script for season 5 changed at the last minute what happened?

SDK - Stressed he was on vacation that week. It was mostly a matter of having to change things to cut costs. However because Al and Miles were off shooting Aquaman in Florida the changes came later on than usual for a script. He was still amazed at how good the finale looked and thought the writers did a great job.

Q - Thoughts on the CW.

SDK - No one really knows what it will be like. It killed a lot of pilots including Aquaman and one that Steve had pitched. Both Dee Dee and Steve really liked the Aquaman pilot and were very disappointed to see it fail.

Q - What actors bring to roles

DDB - The best thing in casting is when an actor brings something totally unexpected to a role and it just comes to life in front of you.
