Q&A:

Himber represents the actress in the Dog play as well

He played a gay in "Just Friends" before.

And he takes his clothes off again. But it's for art.

He's taking his loved ones with him to SF for the duration of the play.

He used to play in a little dusty bar on McKenzie in Modesto, did James Taylor covers.

By the way, he's wearing a black tshirt iwht his blue Ramones shirt over it and a silver necklace, tightish blue jeans, and his hair is brown and curly. and adorable

He auditioned for Spike three days before filming, so he's glad that there wasn't another actor who was taller who could do the accent. He was asked to do a second accent, so he picked a southern accent that no whit guy nowadays has, but as a vamp he's old enough that that it could work.

Saving Grace - he just did it, Holly Hunter was fab. He was nervous, Holly turned out to be a fan of his and had been following his career for years. He only had two days, and lost his Taylor guitar on the set.

He's better at acting than music, but music is so fun. He's just glad that people are interested in listening to his stuff. But all art is reminding us that we are not alone.

He actually loves when female fans meet him and find themselves unable to speak. He was reduced to jello in the presence of Nimoy. He was trying to ask him a Trek question, but Nimoy wanted to talk politics. He went to Trek conventions with Spock ears.

He probably won't be able to record the new CD until after the play in September. He was going to do it this summer, but the play came up.

Actors on Smallville were fabulous. Michael Rosenbaum is an E Ticket Ride. It's gold onthe set. He's so smart. Tom is fabulous, and also smarter and dirtier than you'd suspect, but he's a good leader. Hames had a hard time figuring out what Fine was doing by the middle of the season. Honduras? He had no idea at first why he ws injecting Lex with the serum.

Bad acting is just posing, which he hates, so not knowing why he was doing the things Fine was doing felt like posing.

Early Spike was more fun when he was a jerk, but the later Spike is what he's the most proud of. It was all good, but terrifying, because he never knew what he was going to do from show to show. He was signed on for seven years, so you have no idea where they're going to take you.

What? The first CD is sold out? Steve?

Tonight's going to be a little more country than you're used to.

Illyria's pet: He's not big on being anyone's pet, but Illyria was hot and kicking butt. Cavemen, definitely. Astronauts, they have to pick the short guys to fit into the capsules, so it would be the shortest of the astronauts. On the History Channel, the Neaderthals were smart and tough. You could hit them with a big rock and they wouldn't feel it. But if they were playing chess, the astronauts would win.

He'd love to go back to series TV, as long as the writing's good.

He doesn't remember where he got his bracelet that he wears all the time.

The jumping onto the coffin and rolling off was Steve Tartaglia. He was there on the side of the set. Stee was a godsend. He came to Buffy straight out of Hong Kong, where they don't know the meaning of safety. He showed him his reel, and it made him want to throw up. *does wild cringe and covers eyes*

He doesn't have any problem seeing himself on TV, unless he doesn't think the role is going well or that he's interesting.

Juliet Landau was mad when he explained what Dark Horse did with his comic, which he wanted to be a twisted love story, but it turns out that he was the only cast member who had no legal protection so they could do whatever they wanted to with what he wrote, and would he like to do it again? Now they're particular about making Spike look pretty, thinking that he's particular about that. No, he was just not wanting Dru to look that horrible.

Comedy's great, just hard.

The musical was his personal favorite episode of Buffy. Tabula Rasa seemed boring the next week, because there was no music. (As per request, he answered that in the Spike accent)

Has he ever considered doing musicals? Yes, because there are a lot of musicals worth doing these days, but when he was young all they'd do is Carousel.

How did he mentally prepare for the AR? That was the lowest point of his acting career. When he got that script, he went into a deep spiral, but he didn't reach out to anybody and nobody checked on him, they were just worried about Sarah and didn't know. He had to go into therapy because of it. But Sarah and him came together, by the end of the day she was joking and okay.

Harry Dresden-- too many English accents reqauired, so he threw in a few Scottish accents for no particular reason. Too many "booming English voices." He threw up the pages at one point in semi-mock frustration. No, no more Booming Voices! Hee.

BtVS was the best experience of his life. Hard 14 hour days, but it was great.

Spuffy would have worked out, but he thinks Spike blew it. He takes credit for pairing Spuffy, he wanted a reason other than the chip for him to not kill Buffy. Joss gave a "uh huh, that's interesting," so he told the writers that he had a little thing for Sarah, to plant the seed for him loving Buffy. But it came back to Sarah, who he loved as a sister. Joss told me, don't lie." So he just stared at her. Years later, on AtS, he told Joss that Sarah told him that Joss told her that James had a crush on her, and Joss gave a big "Oops!" *hands over mouth and eyes wide* "Ididn'tdoitIdidn'tmeantosaythatItwasn'tmeOops"

Here's my attempt at a summary of the Q&A. Deanna's hit most of it but there were a few bits and pieces to add.

Saturday Q&A

As always let me say this isn’t a transcript and may include things I misheard/misremembered and will not include things I’ve forgotten naturally.

Q – How does he feel about fans interpreting his songs in view of how personal they are and does it annoy him if the interpretations are different to those he intended?

A – He has no problems with fans finding their own interpretations and making the songs their own. He has no idea why he agreed to the thing tonight where he’s supposed to explain the stories behind his songs. He also noted that most musicians on talk shows avoid explaining what a song is about. He thinks he puts into songs things he wouldn’t tell his friends because they’re too embarrassing. His plan was to play all his songs to fill the 90 minute show. For the most part his songs are about falling in and out of love.

Q – About the play and how it came about

A – He called it ‘The Little Dog Barked’ and explained it was fresh off Broadway where it had been a hit. He had one of the leads and the other lead was in the Broadway production and had had great reviews and Steve also is her manager so he’s very happy about it all. He will be taking his loved ones to live in San Francisco whilst he’s in the play as it’ll be working 6 days a week. The plays about a gay movie star who falls in love He mentioned he’d played a gay character before in Chicago. The play was set in Brighton during WW2 and involved a gay character who wasn’t fully out to himself gradually coming out. At the end of the play James would take off his clothes and so would another male character and then they just lay down and nothing happened as they were just sunbathing. The play was called “Just Friends”. He also confirmed that the new play includes nudity on his part.

Q – About doing James Taylor covers in the past

A – He used to play a dusty bar in Modesto and do things off “Sweet Baby James” (I didn’t catch any specific titles but I’m not a James Taylor fan so wouldn’t have recognized them anyway). The problem with covers is that you can never do them as well as the original artist. He remembers trying very hard to sound like James Taylor.

Q – Why didn’t he play “Birth of the Blues” or “100 Acre Wood” anymore?

A – He would be playing “Birth of the Blues” this evening. He had no idea what the
“100 Acre Wood” song might be (supposedly it was performed at an early 14 Below gig). He did have a song that mentioned Pooh, “Goodbye”, so that might be the song. He did comment that “100 Acre Wood” would be a great band name because of the double entendre – he repeated the title with appropriate emphasis i.e. heavy on the <b>wood</b>.

Q – Was he nervous about adjusting his acting back from TV work to stage

A – No, he was more worried that he’d struggle to adjust back. All his theatre stuff was so ingrained in him it was like riding a bicycle but it’s hard to let go of those things again because with an audience you know that they work. He talked a little on how thought out everything is for stage while on film it has to be more spontaneous. So he’s not nervous at all about it and is very happy to be going back to the theatre for a while.

Q – About Spike’s accent

A – He was written as the “Sid Vicious” of the vampire set so he auditioned with a British accent and then they asked him to do it with a Southern accent so he used a Southern accent that isn’t used by white people any more which was sexy but not as inherently violent. He thinks they were just testing him. It was literally days before filming began so he got the job because he could do the accent and he was just lucky they didn’t find a taller guy that could do the accent.

Q – Does he plan to produce Macbeth for stage

A – He originally wanted to when he first moved to LA but early on he couldn’t find any good theatre in the city so he dropped the idea. Some friends tell him he should do it but he’d prefer to take it to Chicago. He’d love to do a movie but he can’t get $15 million to make it though he thinks he still has another 10 years to play the role so maybe he can collect a million a year! He’d spoken to the producer of “Snakes on a Plane” and he was interested by the idea that Macbeth is basically a horror movie.

Q – About his big dramatic scene in PS I Love You

A – It was cut. The director had written this wonderful speech for the character which wasn’t in the book and was based on the directors thoughts after losing a close friend. However, James didn’t feel he did it as well as he should have and wasn’t surprised when the director came to him all apologetically saying he’d have to cut it as it was too much a stand alone piece for the film. He says as always the writer thought it was his fault it didn’t work as it wasn’t written well enough and James felt it was his fault he didn’t act it better. He went on to mention other people in the film including Hilary, Gerry, Kathy Bates – who he adores, and Harry Connick. The experience proved to him again that if you work with great actors they’re really nice and they don’t whine. They were working long days and there was a sickness going round and Kathy was one of the illest but at the end of a long day when they finally got to the close ups she just said that this would separate the men from the boys. He felt he said that on Buffy every week.

Q – About the silliest thing he’d been asked to do in character on a show

A – The idea of Angel and Spike having had sex. He had always seen it as boy love and that Spike was infatuated with Angel. He mentioned that he was supposed to wear a dress in an early episode of Angel but it was cut for time, however “What actor hasn’t worn a dress!” He also mentioned his problems licking SMG and how she’d remarked that he could rape her but not lick her, which he didn’t find particularly helpful.

Q – Advice for the would be actress

A – Be yourself. Realise that you are interesting enough and beautiful enough to be stared at for a long time which is all acting needs. If you truly expose yourself you will be seen as beautiful. You don’t need tricks and clever ideas to do that.

Q – How good his imagination is

A – He can see us all naked right now! He thinks playing with kids is a good test as it requires you to be able to really enter into the imagination. He’s always had a lot of energy which he thinks is true of many successful people and he knows he can be annoying because of it.

Q – About Saving Grace

A – He had a fabulous time working with Holly Hunter who he thinks is amazing. At one point he was so enjoying acting with her he completely failed to react to something happening off camera that he was supposed to do. She came up to him at the start to tell him how she’d followed his career for years and thought he was a great actor which rather freaked him out. All the cast were great. The idea of the series is that this is a woman who’s on the verge of being sent to hell because of her behavious but gets a last chance angel instead. He couldn’t remember the name of the actor who played the angel but he was great and had a wonderful voice he recognized from old Disney cartoons. He only had to shoot for two days and in the process lost his guitar. As a result tonight we’d meet “Malcolm” his freshly repaired Gibson.

Q – Acting vs Music

A – He thinks he’s a better actor than musician. He has confidence in his acting while he always gets a little scared with music which takes some of the fun away from that. Performing artists need an audience so it’s wonderful to have an audience for both his music and his acting. The main purpose of performance art is to show us we’re not alone which people get in a theatre where they all laugh at the same time or gasp at the same time.

Q – Feelings about striking women dumb

A – Very good for the ego. He mentioned seeing Leonard Nimoy when he was campaigning for McGovern and he went and asked a Star Trek question when Nimoy really wanted to talk about politics. The answer to his question being ‘they glue em on with glue’ gesturing at his ears. He mentioned going to conventions as a child with his Spock ears.

Q – Plans for a future CD

A – He has enough songs and needs to call the guy he wants to produce him and risk the rejection. It was something he thought he’d do this summer but now it won’t be until after the play.

Q – How does he prepare for musical performances

A – Lots of practice and rehearsal so he knows he won’t mess something up. Also he soaks his fingers in rubbing alcohol.

Q – About Smallville, particularly working with Michael Rosenbaum

A – He liked all the actors on Smallville. Working with MR was ‘an E-ticket ride’. He was never difficult or mean but when he’s on it’s ‘all eyes on Michael’ which is great on a set as it wakes people up. He was either laughing or confused working with Michael. Tom is more intelligent than we might think and a little dirtier and is a great lead for the show. James’s frustration was that he didn’t know what Brainiac was doing much of the time. He didn’t know why Brainiac lured Lex to Honduras and as a result felt he was just posing as someone rather than being able to really act and that he’d asked on set but no one had known. He didn’t figure it out until he was injecting Lex in the end. Actors are doers and bad acting is posing and fake.

Q – What was his favourite part of the evolution of Spike

A – Going back to meet William. He was surprised as he’d assumed Spike was a bad ass pre-vamping. He was very protective of William. While the later seasons were more challenging as an actor it is always fun to play the jerk in the early seasons. It was terrifying because on Buffy you never knew what they would have you do “Who’s going to wear the tutu this week”.

Q – Difficulty finding his CDs to buy

A – He didn’t know why she couldn’t find them but maybe he needed to make another album. He now knows what his sound is – simple, acoustic and tonight might be more country than we expect.

Q – How did he feel about Illyria picking on Spike

A – He doesn’t want to be anyone’s pet, he prefers being equal but he loved Illyria. Amy had been really worried about it all – being suddenly turned blue for the rest of the run but she was brilliant at it and rather hot. All the crew were amazed by her.

Q – Astronauts vs Cavemen

A – Cavemen because astronauts are always short. Cavemen had tougher bones too. Astronauts would win at chess though.

Q – Theme song for life

A – It’d probably be too full of self pity to admit to and then he opted for Bruce Springsteens “No Surrender”.

Q – Will he go back to serialized TV

A – Absolutely, if he can find something well written as it’s really excited to spend that long exploring characters.

Q – About the bracelet he wears

A – He doesn’t remember where it came from but it doesn’t bother him which a lot of bracelets do

Q – About jumping on the coffin in OMWF and someone farting

A – He didn’t do that as that was stunt Spike – if Spike’s feet are on the ground it’s usually not him but Steve Tartalia. If Spike has one foot on the ground it might be James. He hadn’t heard anything about anyone farting during the scene and hadn’t smelled anything. Steve Tartalia was great as a stuntman.

Q – Does he intend to read the Buffy comics

A – He talked about the bad experience he had with Dark Horse where he wrote what he thought of as a twisted romance for Spike and Dru and they drew it as a grotesque horror which really upset Juliet and he had to go and apologise to her. He talked to Dark Horse about it and they said it had been something they’d wanted to do and he was the only actor who didn’t have any legal protection in his contract to stop them and would he like to write another one. He hasn’t read any since and now he thinks they make Spike too pretty saying he is very particular about it while his problem all along was what they did to Juliet. “I’m your man, I’m making fun of you all over the world!”

Q – About going on Supernatural

A – They’d heard the producers were interested and Steve got in touch but they never heard anything back. He likes the show but feels it needs more characters.

Q – About doing comedy in the past

A – He mentioned a character who did nothing but pratfalls (I missed the name of the character but he did it in a foppish English accent). He did Sir Andrew Aguecheek in rep with Macbeth and did it so that no one realized he was the same actor as was playing Macbeth.

Q – Favourite episode of Buffy

A – The musical, afterwards doing Tabula Rasa seemed boring because of the lack of music. They all thought the musical was going to be a disaster and an embarrassment. He and ASH were the least nervous as they both sang before but everyone else was very concerned as they weren’t singers and hadn’t signed up to do a musical.

Q – About doing musicals

A – He thinks there are some great musicals these days but he grew up in a town that always did things like “Carousel” and he said he would only do straight plays.

Q – Preparing for the attempted rape.

A – It was the worst moment of his career. He hates watching rape scenes, he won’t take those kind of roles so he was bothered by the script. He feels he spiraled down after that and no one checked on him and he went a little crazy and actually took himself into therapy to get over it. He told the writers they didn’t know what they were asking of the actors. Everyone was very concerned about how Sarah would cope and no one checked on him. By the end of the day SMG was joking about it and he was a wreck.

Q – About the Harry Dresden audio books

A – There were too many English accents in the last book at the Wizard’s council he did all described as booming and how many of those can you do? So he threw in a Scottish accent for no reason. He likes the books and now reads them for pleasure himself.

Q – Does he stay in touch with the Buffy cast

A – Not really. He sees Alexis at auditions sometimes as they’re often up for the same roles. He thinks it’s like they were in a war together against time and it builds up some kind of military like camaraderie. They all saw the best and worst of each other. There are good memories but also painful memories as they worked so hard and so long. “The best experience of my life but not easy.”

Q – Could Buffy and Spike have worked out

A – Yes. Going for his soul after blowing it so badly meant there was hope they could but after such a mess up maybe not. He explained that he came up with the idea of Spike and Buffy. He wanted Spike to have an internal reason for not wanting to kill Buffy anymore rather than the chip. He felt Spike could fall in love with Buffy which she would never reciprocate and that she’d just torment him with it. However he knew he couldn’t just suggest it to Joss as then Joss wouldn’t do it but in theatre he’d learned that if you planted a seed with a writer in time they’d think it was their idea. Instead he decided to be sneaky and just told Joss that he had a thing for Sarah instead. He was then caught out because Joss told Sarah and Sarah confronted him about it. He didn’t want to confess to Sarah what he’d done so he said nothing and just stared at her without saying anything. It paid off because later on Joss did put Spike and Buffy together. When he was on Angel he told Joss that he knew Joss had told Sarah and Joss was all aghast about it. In many ways it was very like high school…

Q – About coming back in Angel after being redeemed on Buffy

A – He was delighted to come back. He’d taken on his niece as her guardian and suddenly needed things (house, nanny) so was happy to continue in the role. He enjoyed working with David. The problem was his move to Angel was leaked ahead of time which diminished the impact of his death on Buffy. He wanted to look at souled Spike more and he thought that the Angel/Spike story could have run for years
