Exclusive Interview with Charlie DeMars
On Thursday, February 26th 2004, I had the opportunity to interview Charlie DeMars for the International Site and Board. Learn about the past, the present and the future in this exclusive and very informative interview.

Have fun reading the interview!!!

Ghost: How important is it to you to be able to go out and perform for people in public, and be accessible to the band's fans?
Charlie: Important compared to what?

Ghost: Well music could be just a hobby for you and you could just make music for yourself at home. Or, like you do now, you have a band and you perform for a big audience. So how important is it for you to be able to do that.
Charlie: It's as important to me as it is to the fans...

Ghost: What was your motivation to start making music in the first place and at what age did you start?
Charlie: My motivation started nine years ago December, 1994. I started really playing music a long time ago but there are no rock clarinet players... don't even think of Kenny G. So I had to turn to rock and that was around 1997 when I started playing guitar.

Ghost: When did you write your first song and do you still remember what it was about?
Charlie: I don’t remember a lot, but I do remember it was called "Theresa's on Prozac". I wrote it about my aunt that happened to be on Prozac at the time.

Ghost: What was it like to play for an audience for the first time?
Charlie: I was very nervous like anyone that is about to try at something they put everything they can into. Knowing that people will think it's bad and hoping someone will think it's good.

Ghost: Who has influenced your musical style the most over the years?
Charlie: Probably me.

Ghost: What has been your most embarrassing moment on stage?
Charlie: Personally it's hard to say... but as a group I have millions

Ghost: How do you guys decide on the set list for each show?
Charlie: Well, we all have a general idea but we usually give that job to Kevin and he does a good job. But mostly we decide what we want to play and then Kevin puts some order to it.

Ghost: What's your inspiration for song writing?
Charlie: Half the time I don’t know but the rest of the time I would be lying if I didn't say about love and women.

Ghost: Are you still thinking about making a video for one of the songs or how about a Tour 2003/04 DVD?
Charlie: You know, I want to do it all, and all the ideas are there. But we are taking one thing at a time, with that in mind for the future.

Ghost: That's good. Something to look forward to.

Ghost: What's the most embarrassing song that you like, but wouldn't want to admit that you like it?
Charlie: I have lots of those.

Ghost: Can you name one?
Charlie: There are still some good minds in entertainment. They do get lost in the mix of what sells as opposed to what is good on all levels. It's really just a matter of respect. I can respect something and still not like it. That goes for every kind of music.

Ghost: Have you noticed any difference between the American, British and German audiences?
Charlie: Accents

Ghost: What's the craziest thing a fan has ever done to meet you?
Charlie: Nothing too crazy. I like everyone but, it’s annoying when people waste my time just to get to James.

Ghost: Is there any superstitions that you or any of the other guys have? Anything you just have to do, wear or say before you feel you can take the stage and perform? Any little prayers or rituals, even if they're kind of embarrassing?
Charlie: We have attempted huddles and have had some pre-show speeches, but nothing ritualistic. Well, at least on my part.

Ghost: When you write a song do the lyrics usually come first or the music?
Charlie: People always ask that and I can't answer it because it's never the same and sometimes I don’t know.

Ghost: That makes sense. I guess it's different for each song.
Charlie: There is no discipline in the song writing process.

Ghost: Knowing that you guys have a wide range of styles, which band member do you bump heads with the most, creatively?
Charlie: We don't run into each other because we look at where we are coming from before we say anything. Well for the most part. but usually we all understand our roles and we realize when we suggest bad ideas and we gracefully bow out of the suggestion.

Ghost: Ok. So we had the craziest thing a fan has done to meet you question and now we come to "What's the nicest thing a fan has ever done for you or the band?
Charlie: Lots of fans have done lots of nice things for me. As for the band, being a fan should be enough. As I am a fan myself I know what it can mean and I am always willing to do whatever to make people feel appreciated for what they do. But that goes both ways.

Ghost: Which gives you more satisfaction; recognizing repeat fans at shows or seeing new faces (knowing that you have a good following or the thrill of gaining a new audience)?
Charlie: Both. All creators want their creations to be seen, it doesn’t matter if it's an artist at an art gallery, a musician at a show, or a parent signing their kid up for acting lessons.

Ghost: Use three adjectives to describe yourself.
Charlie: Chivalrous, noble and respectable.

Ghost: What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?
Charlie: I do a lot of things, but I would like to direct something visual. Try to let someone see exactly what it is that I see in my head would be something I would be very happy to do if afforded the opportunity.

Ghost: You mean like a movie or a musical?
Charlie: Movie. More control.

Ghost: Would you star in your own movie?
Charlie: Depends. If there is a more convincing actor that gets my point across better than I, then I would say no. If not, then yes, I guess I would be forced to.

Ghost: So if you were to make a movie about you and your life. Who would you want to play you (other than yourself I mean)
Charlie: I don’t think there is a handsome enough actor...

Ghost: Ok. Quick question about the new album. Is it still up for release on May 14?
Charlie: I make only one promise... that when it is done it will be good. But you can not rush an attempt at perfection. Especially when it is something imperfect. Perfection is cultivated, not created.

Ghost: Will you have time to do some sightseeing when you're in Berlin, Amsterdam, London etc? Or will you have a tight schedule?
Charlie: Very tight schedule.. Remember that this is a job, the most unfortunate thing about working in such awesome places. You can say you've been there but you really haven't. I rarely sleep and I make it a point to see as many things as possible.

Ghost: Well I hope you can visit all those places again for a vacation. It would be great

Ghost: Thank you very much for interview. It was a pleasure. :-)
