5.22 Not Fade Away (series finale...that's all, people!)

Ангел начинает идти вперед, направляясь к сиденью (seat). Мы передвинаемся вместе с ним, по мере того как он пересекает помещение. Когда он подходит к определенному столу, он останавливается и опускает взгляд.
Ангел: Привет.
Противоположный ракурс показывает Коннора. Он сидит в одиночестве, перед ним разложено несколько книг и бумаги. В тот момент когда он поднимает глаза на Ангела мы переключаемся на:
Интерьер. Паб. (PUB) День.
Крупный план барной стойки. Пустая стопка с грохотом ставится на поверхность рядом со стопкой, наполненной Jack Daniels. Мы видим руку, которая берет наполненную стопку, камера отъезжает и мы видим, что это Спайк. Он выпивает стопку и оглядывает бар. Вокруг него много крутых мужиков, которые явно не прочь подраться. Анна: Чарльз!

А теперь комментарии и размышления. Меня, как ни странно, удивил Pub. Мне до сих пор казалось, что пабы - это в Англии, а в Лос-Анджелесе это название не фигурирует. Но ни на одном форуме я не заметила удивления по этому поводу.

1. toothy
A radical interpretation of the 22 sides.
The most important word in the sides, "DAY"
Angel and Spike have shanshued. A human Angel goes to see his son. Spike gets his "one good day". He fought slayers because this was the only battle he knew he could lose. After having vampire strength, he's now ready to go out in a fair fight.
2. Aquillea
However, I'm not sure we yet have a very clear picture of what it means to Shanshu. Actually it could be kinda fun if Angel did 'Shanshu' and someone says "So...?" Wanting to know how it feels to finally get the 'big prize' and Angel just kinda shrugs... because it hasn't actually changed anything for him. You know, a little like Dorothy trying to get home from Oz. It was a quest for her to get there yet the Good Witch finally reveals she's always had the power, herself. It's a journey of self-discovery where there person doesn't really change too much at all... just their self-awareness, their understanding of their place in the world and their desire to occupy that space... their sense of 'home'.
In addition, there is still the chance that Spike could Shanshu (as in become human), not Angel. Angel has already given up that opportunity once. I could see Angel being offered the opportunity again and again turning it down, only this time not for Buffy but for himself. Angel got stuch with a soul while Spike sought his out. It was a step for Spike in the humanizing direction. I think, unlike Angel, Spike would be a happy camper if he could be human again. I could see a scenario where Angel gets offered the Shanshu and Spike tries not to seem disappointed but it's obvious he is. Angel thinks about it... then asks if Spike can Shanshu instead. I think this scenerio works for Angel's 'journey', Spike's 'journey', and the sort of sibling-rivalry relationship between Angel and Spike.
After Spike Shanshus he would taunt Angel saying he only did it because he wanted to be the only comic-book hero, vampire with a soul guy. Yet you can tell Spike is happy and grateful to be human again... While at the same time all the Angel-Angel fans who somewhat resented Angel having to share the spotlight with Angel get to have that resolved, heroically, by Angel.

There was an episode of H:tLJ that also was entitled Not Fade Away. In that episode a character who was once a "soldier" dies and goes to the Underworld where he finds his father... a slain soldier who was denied access to the Elysian Fields.
How did Cordy put it about Doyle again... the first soldier down/to fall? Something like that? Sooo... if old soldiers never die, they just fade away... and our AI gang are going to NOT Fade Away... does that mean they never give up the fight (perhaps Angel) or they never get to be old soldiers, in other words they die as young soldiers (Doyle, Cordy... who knows who else?) or, probably, a little of both?

If the description was EXT. - BAR - DAY, and Spike was standing around having a pint, then I'd get excited, but it's INT. He's inside in the daytime. Whoopee. Big deal. The 'day' description is probably there to provide timeframe references, as happens in the scripts.
4. Zoriah
All the snippet shows is that Anne is at the shelter and they are moving some boxes into a truck(possibly leaving to a new premises?) She sees Gunn and says his name. That's it.
I find it more believable Gunn is checking in with the 'bros' one last time than I do that Gunn has a new job.
All we see with Angel and Connor is that Angel walks up and says hi. Since Connor has his study books before him I would think it's an unexpected visit.
I see Spike's scene as rather fatalistic. One last rabble he can enjoy before the true ugliness comes.
5. Clairel
I didn't notice what the scene numbers were, but someone told me they were scenes 7, 8, and 9. But if the things I described are happening early in the episode, then maybe the previous episode (5.21, "Power Play") actually wraps up all or most of the W&H plot, and what we have going on for most of 5.22 is Our Heroes' new lives. Angel's re-connecting with Connor could actually be broken off with Angel saying "Hi," and everything else just implied--but there are other things Angel needs to resolve in his life, such as where he's going to live and what he's going to do from now on, and that could take up a big chunk of the episode. Also, I have a feeling Angel-Spike interaction will be important in this episode. So undoubtedly the last we see of Spike won't be him alone in a bar. Maybe Angel goes and finds him later, and they thresh some things out about their future partnership (I assume there will be a future partnership between Spike and Angel).
6. Dandy

Anne has a lot of connections in the Buffyverse. Anne, here, I think represents Buffy's place in this universe, her morality. In the episode Anne, Chanterelle abandons her old life and adopts Buffy/Anne's identifty, her job, her name and her morality. She 'becomes' Buffy. She goes on to be an empowered woman who helps street kids. She also represents Angel, the Angel whose life was unfocused until Whistler led him to Buffy. The comparison between Anne, still fighting the good fight, one soul at a time and the fallen Angel of W&H is jarring.
Buffy was the example that inspired Anne, Angel and later Spike to adopt her mission, tailored to themselves. So Gunn, going back to Anne, is in essence acknowledging his moral failure, seeking guidance, inspiration, an example of purity, the morality Anne adopted from Buffy. He is in exxence, going back to the supreme example of morality in the Whedonverse--Buffy. He goes to her as one would go to pray in a church, to seek out the statue of Mary, reconnect, find one's moral center again in the place of virtue.
The inclusion of Anne acknowledges Buffy as the supreme example of morality in this universe. She is the Christ figure, the one who sacrificed herself to save the world, the one who never failed the tests of her morality, who sacrificed her personal life to her mission. The potentials are the equivalent to the apostles, spreading the power, the word, the deeds around the world.
How does Angel fit into a Christian analogy? I'm not sure. Depends on what he does. This whole season has been about deception. My whole reading of the dream in Soul Survivor is a positive one. The raisin, the nut are condensed foods, nutrients, deceptively appearing shriveled and old but in reality, potent and rich. So, I'm thinking (OK, hoping) our fallen Angel is going to pull it out of the hat. Be our true, strong, good Angel.
Isn't there some indication from one of the sides that he may let Sebasis think he is Angelus, and he tells someone (Wes? Gunn?)that it is still he, Angel? Angel using deception would fit with the themes of the season, would answer Lindsey's call for him to beat W&&H at their own game.
On the other hand sequels and future plans for Angel would not preclude the death of the character here. Resurrection is a good way to start a new series, movie, etc. Lord knows, it's easy enough. I could practically do it. So I wouldn't count on Angel or any of them not biting the big one.
