Mountain Dew?

ep 9 is 1/14
ep 10 is 1/21
ep 11 is 1/28
ep 12 is 2/4

start of sweeps 2/5
ep 13 and first of sweeps-2/11

http://www.filmjerk.com/nuke/article721.html<BR>

In a forthcoming episode of “Angel,” written by Steven S. DeKnight and Drew Goddard, the title hero encounters an old foe that he fought alongside with in World War II. Flashing back between 1943 and the present day, the season’s (lucky) thirteenth episode – which will begin filming December 9 – reveals that Angel was once cajoled into fighting for the U.S. on a German U-Boat, trying to contain a Nazi plans to control vampires by brainwashing them.

Four days before filming is set to begin, producers are still looking for an actor to portray Nostroyev, described in casting documents as a mid-40s strapping vampire that has a Russian or Slavic accent. A revised casting call was sent out yesterday to the agents of actors for the role.

According to casting sides FilmJerk.com has obtained, the episode begins with a German U-boat cruising on the Atlantic Ocean’s surface, circa 1943. There, the members of the United States Navy crewing the sub are attacked by a vampire in the sub with them. As they radio for help, a number of the crew is killed, including the captain.

After shifting briefly to the current day, viewers are once again brought back to 1943, this time to New York City, where Angel is roused in his sparse apartment by a Commander Petrie, who asks him if he’s been up on the news of the war. When Angel admits he has not, Petrie quotes Plato, telling him that “ignorance is the root and stem of all evil.” Petrie needs him to contain a problem on the U-Boat, telling him is the only one who can rise to the occasion. In fact, he doesn’t have a choice in the matter. For those looking for a full break-out of occurs later in this episode, including how Spike plays into the 1943 conflict and how Angel is pressed briefly back into service, head over to SpoilerSlayer.com.

The episode will be directed by Terrence O’Hara.

Co-Executive Producer: Jeffrey Bell

http://www.fhmus.com/girls/covergirls/256/

Mercedes McNab reigns as Angel’s most sumptuous vampire—if you’re able to see her beyond David Boreanaz’s massive forehead.

You don’t have to be a longtime fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or its spinoff, Angel, to appreciate FHM’s photo shoot with Mercedes McNab, the Vancouverite-turned-Californian beauty who plays snob-turned-vampire Harmony Kendall. No one, however, loves these particular photos more than Mercedes herself.
“All the pictures I see of myself have me with the vampire face,” gripes the breathtaking 23-year-old. “Those pictures haunt me. To do it, they stick straws in my nose and pour this goop over my head for a mold of my face. I’m not claustrophobic, but as soon as they cover my mouth, I start freaking out.”

Thankfully, Mercedes’s wardrobe for the FHM shoot was considerably simpler to put on. “I was nervous at first, but I got really into it,” she marvels. “I wasn’t much help in the styling department. I think I might own one bra, a nude multi-purpose one. I don’t really like underwear and stuff like that because I have no use for it.”

Amen to that, sister. Amen to that.

How do the Buffy and Angel fans react when meeting you?
This one Buffy fan in a wheelchair started crying hysterically when she saw me. She tried to stand up and I felt like I was healing someone on one of those “praise the Lord” shows. The thing Angel fans ask most about is what it’s like to kiss James Marsters’s character Spike.

In our Girls of Buffy issue, one of your co-stars said there was behind-the-scenes talk of making a Spike dildo.
Oh my God, I never heard that. My first sex scene was with him. All I had were Band-Aid-sized pasties and a really thin, sheer G-string. The crew normally doesn’t hang out for those scenes, but everyone seemed to be needed right behind the camera. I just found out that James is 41. I had no idea. I was like 17 when we started fooling around on the show. Jailbait!

Your bitchy character on Buffy has been called Little Brain and simply Blond Girl. How blond are you really?
Sometimes I ask really stupid questions and say things before I think. I saw on one Web site that Harmony was voted the second most annoying character on both of the shows. Interest gets the better of you on the Internet. You want to see what people are saying and if any nude pictures are floating around. There shouldn’t be any though.

Were you a wild child growing up?
When I was 18, my friend and I came up with this elaborate scheme to get fake IDs. They don’t fingerprint in Arizona, so we got our friend’s paperwork, bought a plane ticket from L.A. to Arizona, went to the DMV, became 28-year-olds and flew back to party that night. And once for a New Year’s party, I wore a completely see-through dress—but it was at the Playboy Mansion. I had to do it so I can tell my grandkids that their grandma was pretty cool because she swam naked at the Playboy Mansion. Excuse me, swam . . . in her underwear at the Playboy Mansion.

What is Mercedes McNab’s porn name?
Alicia Hollows. It’s funny, my real name sounds like a stripper name, too, but that’s what I was given at birth. I always asked my mom why, and she would say, “Oh, it’s because I really liked it.” But I’m convinced it’s because they had a Mercedes when I was born and that I was conceived in it.

James Marsters
~ Spike

James Marsters has always been a fan favorite. His move to Angel was one of the most anticipated events in the history of the show. Having been a part of now two one hundred episode shows, James truly counts his blessings. Not one to let popularity to his head, he is extremely grateful for all his success, “I’m so lucky. That’s what happened with me on Buffy. I jumped onto a show that was already a success and I did it again. And I’m just reaping the rewards of other people’s work again. Lucky.” While Spike may have become an icon, James tries to distance himself from getting cocky, “I still am resistant to think about that [Spike’s popularity]. I think that, in general, celebrity will destroy your soul. If you concentrate too much on how popular you are, or what the affect is out there, it just trips with your head. I contemplated a little too deeply one season and it really was too trippy. I’m so appreciative of it, it’s wonderful, but what is important is really what I do today and if I suck or if I don’t suck,” he admitted. James is constantly surprised at the direction his character has taken. He assumed that he would be merely a fun annoyance to Angel. The writers, as he explains, won’t keep things simple, “we just did a big fight between Angel and Spike. I would have bet my whole nut on, I would have bet my guitar, on the fact that angel was going to win that fight. What they’ve done is open Angel for a whole new arc of self-doubt and a whole new reason to try to redeem yourself beyond the reward. Genius.” James has also begun to realize that there is a lot more dramatic potential between Angel and Spike than he initially thought, “for example, Spike never bought that Angel was reformed. He was like ‘bullshit, you’re still gonna kill people, I don’t buy that for a second.’ It doesn’t register with Angel now that Spike has gotten a soul and is reformed. He does not see himself in Spike at all and I think that is because Angel has seen Spike do such horrendous evil that he just can not believe that you can come back from that. And Spike doesn’t believe that angel can come back, even though they’re both hoping to come back from doing what they’ve done. It’s a really wonderful doppelganger for him,” he explained.

Since his arrival, vicious false rumors have spread over the Internet about James taking over on set. Scoffing at the rumors, he explains that things couldn’t be farther from the truth, “between David and I functionally? There are no sparks at all. I am in awe of this guy. He is the same guy that I met a long time ago filming Buffy. This guy that broke a @#%$ two by four with his head! He was doing a gag where they had a wire on his back. It went a little wrong and he went through with his head and broke it! He’s bleeding and he’s like nothing, he’s hiding the blood and he just wanted to get the next take. He’s the same guy,” he said. Not only have David’s acting chops impressed him, but his directing abilities as well, “he’s so good. He doesn’t know this really, but he’s so good that we forgot he was a first time director! We all got lazy and kind of left him in a ditch a bit, and had to remind ourselves ‘@#%$! David! We should be here for David because he’s really a first time director.’ He had the quality of such confidence and knowing what he wanted to do one step at a time that it was like working with Jefferson Kibbee, one of our directors who has been doing it for thirty or thirty five years.” David has been so impressive that the crew has been approaching James to lobby for David to direct more, “the crew is coming up to me and pressuring me to suggest that David gets another episode or two this year when we’re really tired so that we can have a strong director and we don’t have to stress out more than we need to. Hollywood stars are supposed to be spoiled and supposed to not be able to think of anybody but them, and that’s so not David at all.” However, directing isn’t a path that James necessarily wants to pursue, “I’m more interested in producing, frankly. As I see how things work in television specifically. I think the things that interest me are the larger arcs of characters, finding larger components, and deciding what the story is that we’re going to tell, and how we tell it.”

TV Guide Online has an interview with Christian Kane that also gives us the title of the 100th episode as "You're Welcome".

TV Guide Insider
http://www.tvguide.com/news/insider/031208b.asp

Angel Foe's Tattoo Secret
by Daniel R. Coleridge
Last month on Angel, Eve freaked us out by crawling into bed with none other than Lindsey McDonald! The evil Wolfram & Hart lawyer was MIA until the "Destiny" episode, which revealed him as her secret lover. Who knew Christian Kane, who plays Lindsey, was so tattooed and muscular? "I've been off the show for two and a half years, man," he tells TV Guide Online. "I had some time to hit the gym."

By the way, although Kane does have tattoos of his own, the tats we've seen onscreen are fake. According to a setside source, they represent a code which Angel's gang will decipher in the show's 100th episode, "You're Welcome," airing Feb. 4. Damn! Can't we get a hint of their mysterious meaning before then? C'mon, Christian, hook us up...

"I know what the tats mean," Kane admits. "I just can't tell you! 'Cause then, I'd have to kill you. And if I did tell, then [Angel creator] Joss Whedon would probably kill me. It will all be revealed in that big episode."

Well, besides buffing up, what's Kane been up to during his time away from Angel? "I've done six movies," he proudly points out. These include Secondhand Lions, Angelina Jolie's Life Or Something Like It and Just Married with Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy. He's currently filming Taxi, a comedy co-starring Queen Latifah.

And as if all that's not enough to keep him busy, the 29-year-old actor's band, Kane, has just signed a record deal with EMI Nashville. They're currently recording their second album, but the first one — also entitled Kane — still is available through their website. "We're a little country rock," he grins. "It's like Lynyrd Skynyrd meets the Allman Brothers meets George Strait."

Ana Luiza asks: I've heard that Sarah Michelle Gellar was going to do one episode of Tru Calling. Is that true?

Kristin replies: Hmmm... Not that I've heard of. She's actually here today doing an interview for the Style network. But because I love you with all that is within me, I am HERE, doing this freaking CHAT of all things, instead of harassing her.

---

Kristin:Speaking of Tru Calling...a VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: This Thursday marks the first time ever that Tru Calling will air without Friends and Survivor, so it is THE time to check it out. Fox. 8pm. Seriously, what else do you have to do? I also hear this is the episode we'll find out why Tru (Eliza Dushku) has her calling--it's the "mother" of all reveals. A very good episode. And now that the show has been picked up for a full season, you don't have to worry about Fox yanking it right when you get attached.

Kristin: get attached.

---

datagrrrl asks: Tell us, Tubalicious one, when will Charisma Carpenter be guesting on Angel?

Kristin replies: For the 100th episode, which airs Feb. 4.. The cast and crew had a big bru-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha (my sides ached, damn you Andy Hallet) on Thursday to celebrate the 100th episode, so stand by for the full details as we get closer to the ep's airdate. We'll most likely be putting up a package extravaganza on the whole thing.

Kristin: For now, I can tell you that David Boreanaz's son is the cutest damn thing alive (the two shared a sugary sweet moment over the cake), Andy Hallet is the funniest man alive (he spent ten minutes doing silly tricks with the speeds of my tape recorder and making me laugh so hard I cried), James Marsters is still the sexiest thang alive and Alexis Denisof is now six-months married and still punch-drunk GIDDY. Too adorable.

----

lillyblue asks: Was Charisma there?

Kristin replies: Yes, and it sounds like she is pretty much done with the show after this episode. I'll transcribe the interview for you and give you the deets in this week's column, but she pretty much said that she feels this episode is wrapping up Cordelia's storyline, and has no plans of returning.

---

slayergirl3 asks: hmmmmmm, I'm going to chant my mantra of Angel, Angel, Angel over again and maybe I'll get lucky with some news.

Kristin replies: Christian Kane is still around for the 100th episode and he's HOPEFUL he'll stick around even longer. As for storyline scoop (Spoiler Alert!) An upcoming ep starts with a flashback of World War II on a German submarine filled by an American crew. Everyone is running around terrified and the Captain is in no condition to command. Angel and Spike are on the submarine and there's talk between the crew that Angel stabbed a man.

---

angllver323 asks: ANNNNNNNNNNNNGEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLL!!

Kristin replies: Man, the Angel peeps are restless today! Okay, here's Cordy's storyline, according to Charisma:
"The 100th episode is about....well, we need to wrap up Cordelia. It's very important that we bring her out of the coma and justify her - situate her. Basically, Cordelia strikes a deal with the powers that be (they owe her a favour) to get Angel on track because Spike has come back, and in doing so has created a lot of self doubt. And Cordelia asks the powers that be to give her this last favour and let her go get Angel on track. Then she leaves. She's in, she's out".

Will Angel Unite This Duo?
by Daniel R. Coleridge

Fans of Angel are wondering if Wesley and Fred will ever couple up. The British bookworm and the mousy lab rat — as played by Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker — definitely have a geek love thang goin' on, don't they? It's not all about the vampires on this show, after all. But like everything on this Buffy spin-off, it's, well, complicated.

"Wesley's always had a thing for Fred, but she keeps breaking his heart by being interested in other people," Denisof tells TV Guide Online. "So who knows where that will go."

"I'm bound to hook up with one of these guys that I've been flirting with soon," Acker teases, speaking in character. "I've been flirting with Spike a little. I have a lab assistant guy named Knox that I hook up with now and then. You haven't seen anything, but we always go off and get beers together, so..."

But what about Wes? "Wesley thinks that something's happening with him," Acker giggles. "I'm still leading Wesley on a little bit. I'm trying to keep my options open. I think that whole thing when he messed around with Lilah hurt Fred's feelings. I felt betrayed by that because he went off and had sex with this bad girl and made her dress up like me. That was weird!"

Yet TV teaches us there's always hope for star-crossed lovers. "I think that I'll end up with Wesley," Acker says. "It's destined. They've kept this going on for three and a half years now, so it seems like there's got to be a payoff there, right? Then again, [Angel creator] Joss Whedon likes to make people suffer, so there's a good chance it'll never happen! But if I had my way, I'd like to do lots of scenes with Alexis Denisof, because he's so fun to work with."

Boreanaz Helms Angel Ep

David Boreanaz, star of The WB's vampire series Angel, told SCI FI Wire that he directed an upcoming episode of the show, his first foray behind the camera. "I had an opportunity ... to step into the director's chair, and I've always been fascinated with the camera and the movement and communicating with other actors," Boreanaz said in an interview on the set of the show, which is shooting its 100th episode. "Directing is really about telling someone to put applesauce on the table. ... And some people know how to do it, and some people don't."

Boreanaz directed "Soul Purpose," an episode in which a parasite gets attached to Angel and puts him through a series of hallucinations, Boreanaz said. "It's really cool," he said. "It's got a Jacob's Ladder feel to it."

Boreanaz got high marks from his Angel co-stars, who said the fledgling helmer acted like a veteran. But will Boreanaz like to step behind the camera more often? "I don't know," he said. "Yeah, I think so. ... You're directing ... an already prescribed show. You have your limitations. You can put your mark on it, and I feel like I did that with this show that I directed. But then again, I'm not the show runner. I don't get the final cut. I will have a director's cut, and if anybody would like to see [it], it will be much longer [laughs]." "Soul Purpose" is scheduled to air Jan. 21, 2004.

http://www.ugo.com/channels/filmtv/features/firefly/josswhedon.asp

Exclusive interview by Michael Patrick Sullivan, contributing editor

Joss Whedon is one busy guy. This month sees the release of not only the fifth season of his cult-favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, but also the only season of his critically acclaimed, sci-fi western, Firefly. He did have time enough to sit down with us, however, to discuss his shows, how little time he has, merchandising, and what else this famous producer has in store for fans coming up.

"I have this series and I have this son and between the two of them, one of them is always crying," Joss Whedon started our discussion, referring to his only show currently on the air, Angel, and his nearly one-year-old child. "That's not true," he clarified. "My son hardly ever cries, but the series. That's another story.

There are only twenty-four hours in a day, and raising a child certainly eats into that. "I have been spending an enormous amount of time with this tiny boy that I'm in love with. that's my son by the way. I don't want that to come out wrong."

Some of his time must, of course, go to professional pursuits. "I am working on a script for a Firefly movie, so that takes up some of my time," Whedon said. "Angel is my first priority because it's happening. That also takes up a lot of my time."

Whedon went on to explain, "It a question of finalizing the scripts and finalizing the cuts [on Angel]. I now have a staff who can take all of those processes a long way, particularly the scripts and the cuts. They come out very well before I even lay a hand on them."

"It's breaking the stories that takes up most of the time," Whedon continued. "It always is, it always has been. It's the hardest thing to do. To find the concept. Find the structure. Once that's done, my writers are great, they're great producers, and my cast is stalwart and true. I know that nine times out of ten it's going to be really close to home. Making up the story, that's always the hardest part."

And that hard part will continue for some time to come as the show, which had to work hard to get a half-season order for the fall, has been picked up for the rest of its season. The news of the renewal came as a bit of a surprise to the staff, not because they expected to get the axe, but because they thought they'd already had the full 22 episode order.

Whedon related that "the network called up and said 'We piggybacked you on the deal for another show,' I'm like 'Okay, so what you're saying to my writers is that they weren't picked up when they thought they were and now that they are it was because of something that has nothing to do with them. Okay. Great. Stop calling."

Whedon attributes Angel's continued life to the "vagaries of network finance" and improved ratings. The show Angel was dealt in tandem with is not another Whedon production. That does not rule out that possibility in the future. "I always have various projects that I cannot speak about because they exist only in my head, but you'd be amazed how much time they take up and sometimes they actually become something," said Whedon. "Eventually." He continued, "I do not have anything in the pipeline right now. I have some ideas but the cancellation of Firefly was a real body blow, probably much more than I'll ever tell to an interviewer."

And that is the reason why the DVD release of Firefly is so important to Whedon. "I loved that show and I think it was one of the greatest things I've ever done. It wasn't like they were saying 'just tweak this' and 'just tweak that.' It was over before it began."

Firefly's cancellation seems to be something of a theme in Whedon's life. "Most of the shows I loved have been cancelled. For months I bought TV Guide and looked for the next Ben Stiller Show." Whedon calls it a "Your Show of Shows for our generation," harkening back to the Sid Caesar comedy program popular in the early fifties.

Even with the DVD release of Firefly, the aforementioned Ben Stiller Show, and programs like the late Family Guy, Whedon doesn't think networks are learning not to be slow to promote and quick to cancel new shows. "I think that it is a particularly twitchy time, but I also think there will always be shows the networks don't get." Whedon also puts some of the blame on show creators, saying that producers have to meet the wants and needs of the network. "My only hope is that one day, I'll understand what it is the networks want."

Whedon seems to achieved that to some degree and is relieved that, thanks to renewal, no one will show up to the set of Angel and say "stop filming that now," but one day that phrase may well be spoken, and possibly by Whedon himself.

"It could happen," said Whedon. "I did that on Buffy. I was definitely done after seven years. A lot of people attribute that to [Sarah Michelle Gellar], but after seven years I was burnt out. I was just really worn down as we came into the seventh season. Of course we tried hard to make it great, but seven years is a long time and I was tired. Now were in the fifth year of Angel and I'm in a situation where we've gotten to the hundredth episode and I feel like the show has...found it's place in the world."

Whedon is ready, though, for the curtain to fall on Angel at the end of any given season (for whatever reason). "With Angel, we do as we have always done on Buffy where the season ender will either have a lot of closure or a huge amount of open-sure," providing a fitting end to both season and show.

Though Buffy the Vampire Slayer has ended, her merchandise lives on, and Whedon has his favorites. "There is my variant red-pants Willow [action figure]. There's the chess set, that's available in England, that uses the Buffy characters. Xander's the pawn. So I'm thinking, yeah, Xander's the pawn, but there's 16 of him!"

"I do love the cards," he continued. "Every year they hit me up to sign some and I agree. They send me like 2000 cards and I think 'what have i gotten myself into...?'"

While fatigue may set in after the first couple of dozen, Whedon makes certain that each autograph is more than just an inky squiggle. "I feel that if you have an autograph, you should be able to show it to someone and not have to tell them that that X may or may not be Joss Whedon's signature."

Whedon doesn't generally have input on most of the merchandising. "There is so much product, you have to give up control. I don't read the books. Not because I don't want to, I just don't have the time. In the very beginning we set down some guidelines [for the books and comics]. Things like 'no cheesecake.' That was about the extent of it."

If Whedon did have more input, one piece of merchandising that might exist, but doesn't, is a CD of composer Christophe Beck's work on the series.

"We've tried to get one since the Emmy (referring to Beck's win for Best Dramatic Underscore for the second season episode "Becoming Pt. 1"). "It took us seven years to get out two collections of songs...and we've been able to sneak some stuff on there." Whedon explained that mainstream interest (or rather lack thereof) in scoring work makes it "unbelievably difficult" to get a project of that sort off the ground. "There ain't no justice," he said.

Some unexpected merchandising input came when Whedon was asked to provide some voice work for the recent Buffy the Vampire Slayer video game "Chaos Bleeds" "There'd be these parts where it would say something like 'Something to say while killing Tara,' or 'Something to say while killing Willow.' It was very weird. These are supposed to be my friends. I tried to get in the spirit of it."

One very popular piece of ancillary merchandise that Whedon had extensive input into was the recent Dark Horse miniseries Fray, which told the tale of a future slayer. As one might expect from someone with a the extensive time drains that Whedon experiences, the typical monthly schedule of a comic book was not to be maintained.

"That's very embarrassing. There was a year between issues." Whedon said. "Firefly sort of popped up. I wasn't going to do a show for that season." Fox apparently had other plans. "All of the sudden, I had three shows on the air."

"Meanwhile the artist (Karl Moline) got a job at CrossGen Comics," Whedon continues. "They said 'You can finish Fray,' but it was kinda only on the weekends. It is much to my lasting shame that it took so long."

That shame will, no doubt, fade with the passage of time and the release of Fray collected in both trade paperback and hardcover form. Whedon's comics work continues with the forthcoming first issue of Tales of the Vampires, based on Buffy lore.

With so much of Whedon's time accounted for, there simply isn't room for some things. "I don't watch TV," said the television producer. "It's not because of any prejudice against television. It just that you can either watch TV or you can make TV. Between having my son and the show to make, TV just fell out of my life."

"I hear [TV] is really good," he jokes. "There's this reality thing they have now that I hear is really terrific."

As to what television he enjoyed in the days before he became a father, Whedon remarked "the last thing I watched religiously was, the first season of The West Wing."

It stands to reason that Whedon would follow the work of Aaron Sorkin, a master of dialogue, as Whedon is widely regarded as being as skilled in that area. Whedon's dialogue is very distinctive and has its roots in how Whedon himself talks.

"I use 'uber.' I would say that the dialogue on Buffy and Angel is somewhat more stylized than that of me and my friends, but not much more. On Firefly, I found myself talking the way I started writing on that show. I'm probably a bit more formal than my shows because of my education," Whedon said, referring partly to time spent in an English boarding school. "But I can mangle the English language."
