Mountain Dew?

there’s an article in one of our Sunday papers on Luke Perry, AH’s costar in her London play – they note that she “is back in LA for a week working on a sitcom” – would that fit in with Angel’s shooting schedule?

Party Boy aka Daniel Coleridge

Angel's 100th Birthday Bash

This weekend, TV Guide threw a party for WB's Angel to toast the Buffy spin-off's 100th episode. The cast and crew all celebrated at Hollywood's trendy Club Ivar, including three-time cover boy David Boreanaz and his lovely wife, actress Jaime Bergman. Natch, Party Boy was there — risking his neck in a roomful of TV vamps, I might add — to bleed some scoop out of Angel's insiders.

Among the festive guests were Buffy and Angel creator Joss Whedon and cast mates Alexis Denisof (Wesley), J. August Richards (Gunn), Amy Acker (Fred), Andy Hallett (Lorne) and, of course, James Marsters (Spike). Ever the instigator, I was just dying to know what folks think of Sarah Michelle Gellar canceling her May sweeps Angel guest spot?

We already know Boreanaz was grumpy, but he still wants her back for Angel's series finale (whenever that is). How did the others feel about Gellar's decision? "She seemed very committed to do it," Marsters told Party Boy. "I don't know what changed. I suppose she doesn't owe it to anyone, but it would've been nice. Frankly, the real star of this show and Buffy is Joss Whedon. If she wants to come and play in this wonderful universe, I would love to have her, because she's a marvelous actor. But we're having a lot of fun, anyway. If she doesn't want to come aboard, that's cool, too."

"I'll be surprised if it happens," Denisof said. "People tried to get that talk going when Buffy was finishing, and she was smiling and not saying yes or no, because it was the right thing to do politically. But I think Sarah's moved on. In this town, anything can happen."

Notably absent was Denisof's real-life wife, Alyson Hannigan, who played lesbian witch Willow on Buffy. But we forgive her. Hannigan's in London rehearsing for the West End stage version of When Harry Met Sally — costarring Luke Perry! — which opens later this month. (Word is, she beat out Reese Witherspoon for the role. Buffy's very big across the pond.)

One fun surprise guest was actress Juliet Landau — Spike's sublime bloodsucking ex, Drusilla. When Party Boy spotted her, she was sipping non-sanguinary cocktails with her partner-in-crime, Julie Benz, who plays Darla. Last seen in November sweeps, Dru's been sorely missed. Landau told me she wants to come back, but is unaware of any plans in the works. Still, she's chummy with Whedon — the two shared a nice Hollywood hug later on in the evening — so it's only a matter of time...

Former Angel regular Charisma Carpenter couldn't make the bash — her rep says she was out of town visiting family — but she previewed the 100th episode during my recent visit to the set. "I come out of my coma because The Powers That Be owe me a favor," she teased. "Cordelia needs to set Angel back on his path. Angel is confused and in doubt about what his destiny is, because Spike has returned from another dimension and he is working for redemption and he has a soul, too. It leaves Angel in a lot of self doubt. So I set Angel straight and then I leave. I'm in, I'm out!"

Why Angel Lacks Charisma
by Daniel R. Coleridge

Charisma Carpenter

At the end of last night's Angel, viewers learned big news: Cordelia Chase is dead. That's a dreary development for fans of her portrayer, Charisma Carpenter, who are mourning her big time today. But is she gone forever? Could she rise again, like Spike? Here, TV Guide Online sits down with the 33-year-old actress for a candid conversation about Cordy's farewell and her future plans.

TV Guide Online: What a trip it's been. From spoiled rich girl to psychic friend to evil cradle robber! And by that I mean the Cordy and Connor coupling was wrong!
Carpenter: I was a dirty bird! Ugh. That wasn't Cordelia; she was possessed. [Laughs] I'm in denial about that whole story line. It was creepy. Connor was Angel's son and half my age.

TVGO: Why did Cordy have to die?
Carpenter: I'm not on the show anymore and we didn't want to just leave Cordelia in a coma. [Angel creator] Joss Whedon probably feels like this may be the last year — or not — but this would be a very big story left untold. It was necessary for me to at least come back and set her straight.

TVGO: Could you still come back?
Carpenter: Whatever happens after this, I'm open. But it's just best this story be [resolved] now. Otherwise, it's a disservice to the fans of our show. They pay attention, if you haven't noticed, and they're really rather fanatical about getting the full, complete story. They care about the story lines. The Connor/Cordelia thing was, like, major upheaval. They didn't like it and so they responded!

TVGO: It's great that they care enough to watch and complain.
Carpenter: Yeah, my fans are amazing. I didn't even realize that I had such a big following until I left. Whatever it took to discover that, I'm very lucky.

TVGO: So they'll want you back as Cordy...
Carpenter: I don't think it'll be necessary. You never say never. However, at this point in time, I don't see a future for her. Even if I didn't [have other acting work], I feel like Joss feels — the Cordelia stories have been told. There were no other directions to go with her. I mean, they made her a higher being! First she was bitchy, then she was nice. She's matured, she's evolved, what's left to tell? Not a lot. And that's fine.

TVGO: What are your plans?
Carpenter: Well, I can tell you what my goals are. I have a son now, so I want the half-hour sitcom lifestyle, where you can have a family and work. And then, during summer hiatus, I'd like to do a Kill Bill or Wonder Woman or some movie like that.

TVGO: Wait, you want to do the long-rumored Wonder Woman movie?
Carpenter: I am actively putting it out there that I want to do Lynda Carter. It's my mission to be Wonder Woman! My agent hasn't seen a script, but some studio needs to do it. She's beautiful, she fights, and I like the concept of an empowerment role. I've always been so passive on Angel, where they usually wouldn't let Cordelia do martial arts stunts. Charisma wants to kick ass and bust heads!

DishDiva says: We have so many questions so let's get started right now!

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Hi. Thanks for tuning in tonight, the big 100th episode. We're all proud to reach this milestone and I want to congratulate everyone that has been involved and thank you all for watching.

DishDiva says: Make sure to tune in after this event, if you are on the East Coast!

DishDiva says: Tori_gurl14 in onstage1 says: What did you enjoy the most about making the 100th episode of "Angel" which airs tonight?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Really being around Charisma again was great and to revisit characters from Season One. Having a great time with everyone else.

DishDiva says: Are you doing anything special tonight with the 100th episode?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: I'm working. (laughs)

—?R???S??Ð??T— in Onstage3 asks: Are you aware that there are 1,000's upon 1,000's of Cordy/Angel fans?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: I'm not aware of that Mr. President, seeing them tonight was a nice touch that Joss gave both characters, and I hope you enjoy it, but I'm not aware of that.

bobette1114 in Onstage4 asks: Good Evening, David. How is directing an episode differnt than just acting in one?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: You have more responsibilities. The whole cast was very supportive and just encouraged them to do what they do best and it was a great success and I enjoyed it.

Neha_DL in Onstage3 asks: Are you aware you have like a serious fan base in India. We love you here!

DishDiva says: Does it amaze you that the show is seen around the world?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Neha, it is amazing it's seen around th world. I think it's fantastic to have such a large fan base in India, it's a place I've always wanted to visit.

David_Boreanaz_Live says: A big shout out to everyone around the world and I think Joss has done a great job to bring you some new things and we'll need your support for another season.

lafemmedarla in Onstage3 asks: David, how do you feel about the direction this season has taken so far?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: My favorite season so far! It's been the best time I'm having on this show and I love the direction of the characters and have embraced the story line. I hope to have another season. I am really enjoying it.

JArsenal1966 in Onstage3 asks: "Soul Purpose" was awesome. Do you plan on directing more episodes?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Yes. I hope to, not this year, but if Season 6 comes to fruition, then hopefully. I had a great story line for that one and I think that all the stories this year were good and fun to direct. I look forward to direct more in the future.

Babskeschattie1 in Onstage4 asks: Hello a big huggle from Belgium -

David_Boreanaz_Live says: All right!

BuffyChosenWPower5 in Onstage1 asks: Do you ever associate the character Angel with yourself, especially this season how he's "lost the mission"?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: The Mission may have been a bit lost, but after this 100th episode it will come back. As far as what I take from my own experiences, every actor takes from their own experiences, and it's viable for the character. There's things that come from me that I

David_Boreanaz_Live says: heighten and explore and take a different look at.

Fulgencia7239 in Onstage4 asks: Which one is your favorite Angel: early, sophisticated Angel, season 3 goofy, dorky Angel, present Angel or Angelus?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: You know what, all the Angels have been great to play. Going through the list is a credit to the writers not being stuck with a certain personality and I've enjoyed playing them all. I am enjoying this season's Angel and the upcoming episodes. There's a

David_Boreanaz_Live says: submarine episode coming up and there's an episode that I'm turned into a puppet, that you have to see to believe!

shipperxphile in Onstage3 asks: Are we going to see any more Angel/Darla? Those two are HOT together!

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Yeah, Darla is another character. If the story dictates it it will be great. It's just a matter of finding the right story for her to come back.

tiggzOr in Onstage1 asks: David, does being a new dad have any effect of your working and the seasons to come?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Every time you're blessed with a child your responsibilities change and you know what's important in your life and you bring that to work with. It's good for me to see him grow from day to day and laugh and smile. It's been a great thing for me to go

David_Boreanaz_Live says: through.

chibi_kaze in Onstage4 asks: Do you personally think that the Spike and Angel characters have any romantic interest in eachother, albiet a somewhat dysfunctional one?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: No. I don't think there's any romantic interest. They have known each other for a long time. There's a lot of irony between the two, they really don't like each other. (laughs)

lafemmedarla in Onstage3 asks: Which has been your favorite season five moment so far?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Lafemmedarla, the first show that Joss directed was fun. It was a new direction. I enjoyed when I directed and the puppet episode was a LOT of fun, I'm doing a lot of looping for that in the next couple of days.

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Also #16 where there's a cast change that I can't talk about.

Mike7883uk in Onstage3 asks: Hi from England David, when are we going to see you in the new Crow Film?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: That's coming out this year, there's no release date and there's not a final cut yet. I'm hoping for the fall, it's just in their hands now.

Aventurine6 in Onstage1 asks: Is there any chance we might see your lovely wife on Angel?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: No, that won't happen, Aventurine6.

bumbledee66 in Onstage3 asks: Do you believe that Buffy and Angel will end up together in the end?

TheXmasHooker in Onstage3 asks: Do you believe Angel and Buffy are soulmates? I mean so much time as pasted for them.

David_Boreanaz_Live says: I don't know. I think their characters are destined for some romantic gettaway again. Those two characters may be heading back together at the end. Where they're at in their lives they are in the same place, they're just not together.

DamnSkippyToo in Onstage3 asks: We want Cordy back! Please tell us that door isn't locked shut.

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Those doors aren't locked, all the characters that Joss created open. There have been many characters that come back. They may get killed off and die but there's always a beginning and can always be revisited.

Rachel169424 in Onstage1 asks: You Are So Cool .. love the show

TheXmasHooker in Onstage3 asks: David, will Drusilla (Juliet Landau) be returning this season?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: I think that the type of character, I don't see that anymore this season. Her character is set up for a period and if a story fits she will but I don't see that happening.

Babskeschattie1 in Onstage4 asks: David do you still think that Angel should finish by being hit by a bus - that quote just made me laugh.

David_Boreanaz_Live says: (laughs) Yeah, someone asked me that question, if I became human and went outside and just got nailed by a bus. I will be happy with however he goes out. (laughs)

bobette1114 in Onstage4 asks: David, I grew up watching your father on tv. How has he influenced your career?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: My father is a big influence in my life and best friend. He's a gentleman that I respect and has taught me the writes and wrongs and work commitment and putting a smile on your face. That will help you grow with any profession you're in.

EnigmaticMythicGoddess84 in Onstage4 asks: Can we expect another season of ANGEL ?

Mike7883uk in Onstage3 asks: Hi David, any good feelings so far with the WB regarding a Season Six?

DishDiva says: Make sure you tune into the 100th episode tonight on the WB!

David_Boreanaz_Live says: I think Season 6 in my regards is preeminent. I suggest all the fans write in and ask for a Season 6. I would love to have another season. If the she hadn't changed I wouldn't want that, but now where these characters are I embrace that.

Valierisa in Onstage4 asks: Hey there David, do you have any upcoming projects that we should be on the look out?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: "The Crow" is next on my list, and there's a few things in development but when I have a definite then I'll give everybody a shout out and let them know.

kate_ferguson_10 in Onstage3 asks: What do you like best about working on T.V. shows?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: This is a pretty much different show, it's 8 days of mini work, stunts, drama, location shooting. For me it's a great learning curve to get into more things like movies and theater. I love theater so anything that comes. The best part has been learning.

Lisabon3 in Onstage3 asks: What's your favorite show on TV?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: I don't have many favorites. I love AMC Classics and TMC and HDTV and Food Network.

QuietDelusions in Onstage1 asks: What's your favorite episode of Angel over the past 5 seasons?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: It's tough to call one. I liked the 50's episode where we went back in time. "Billy" and any location shoot. I'm pretty partial to every show. It's hard to pick out one that I love, QuietDelusions.

with_love_nikki in Onstage4 asks: David, whats playing in your CD player now?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: I have a lot of Blues and Classic Rock. Pink's album, and I would say I'd be ipodding rather than CD holding.

DishDiva says: What music do you buy most of?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: A lot of rock and roll classics and blues. I love music so anything that catches me.

SoggyRbabe4 in Onstage1 asks: David, what can we do as fans to help Angel get picked up for a sixth season?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Support! Everything you've done so far has been great for us. Tunning in to watch the show, call up Jordan Levin or write letters in support of the show. What you are doing now is fantastic and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

moobunny925 in Onstage4 asks: David, what is it like to know that you and your character will be forever immortalized in the Jossverse?

BuffyChosenWPower5 in Onstage1 asks: Smooochies From Brooklyn !!!

fyreflye13 in Onstage4 asks: Hey David I just wanna say I love ya!!!

Michal185091 in Onstage4 asks: there is a very big fan base in israel too. we just wanted you to know.

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Being associated with Joss has been fantastic for me including all the people I've been around. It's been a pleasure to be a part of it and go on and see it in the future, it's a testimony to the writing and everyone involved. It's great.

MaquisLeader47 in Onstage1 asks: What happened to the Angelmobile? I miss the Plymouth and would love to see it again.

David_Boreanaz_Live says: He got a chance to take over a law office and it's just waiting to boil and blow up in his face. He's rocking it out with different cars. The Plymouth is probably parked somewhere with a lot of parking tickets or food on it. (laughs)

Rinat_Lz in Onstage3 asks: David, are you satisfied with the "Dido clip" you did? I mean, with how it turned out?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Yeah, I didn't think it would be a music video. It was what it was and I got a lot of compliments on that video. I'm enjoying doing more performances.

BrassMonkey740 in Onstage1 asks: What was the reunion with Charisma like?

DishDiva says: BTW, David said boot and not food earlier. Misheard on that one.

David_Boreanaz_Live says: It was sad. We had some good moments and that played out. You'll see that tonight. When you share a part of your life with someone, seeing the two of them is just a great thing. We had fun and we had a lot of memories and she'll forever be in my heart.

DishDiva says: Do have a favorite book?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: I've always liked anything written by the last Roald Dahl, "Catcher in the Rye," Og Mandino, and I also liked "Siddartha."

DishDiva says: Do you have a favorite romantic movie?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Dr. Zhivago or Gone with the Wind. I also liked "When Harry Met Sally" it's cute, funny and romantic. I also liked "The Enchanted Cottage." It was done in the 50's that is a really beautiful love story. If you want to see a movie that you're like "WOW" at

David_Boreanaz_Live says: the end, see it.

DishDiva says: What's the best gift you've ever given someone or that someone has given you?

David_Boreanaz_Live says: My child Jaden, so Jamie my wife gave me the best gift.

DishDiva says: David, from all of your fans from around the world on MSN, thanks for joining us here tonight on MSN Live!

David_Boreanaz_Live says: Thanks I appreciate you guys tuning in and the support over the last 5 seasons and the love and desire to tune in. We'll continue to make you great episodes with characters coming to visit. We love you and thank you from all of us, me and the cast.

DishDiva says: Thanks, David!

DishDiva says: Thanks to tonight's hosts Budd, Ash and Fredia. If you missed any of tonight's event it will be available tomorrow on MSN Live.

Lisabon3 in Onstage3 asks: Hey David. We were in the audience last Monday for Last Call with Carson Daly. We were the screaming chicks standing. Just wanted to say you look freaking HOT!!

Aventurine6 in Onstage1 asks: Thanks for your time David.

DishDiva says: Good night everyone!

Transcript from "Angel" Cast Appearance on the Ryan Seacrest show:

David Boreanaz, James Marsters, J. August Richards, Andy Hallett appeared on the "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" show on Feb. 4, 2004. All in all, it was about 18 minutes of screen time.

I know what you want to know - what was James wearing? Did he look good? Of course! James was wearing a long sleeved, black knit turtle-neck sweater (very yummy!), jeans (surprise) and sneakers. I think it's the same black turtle-neck he wore on his last Craig Kilborn appearance. His hair is fully bleached and cut short. He looked good! He sat legs kind of apart (really wide at first, then less so), hands in front of "that area" in between his legs lush: most of the time. (Mindy is right, he really must stop sitting that way. Very cruel to get the viewers so hot and bothered. )

James seemed very relaxed. In fact, they all did. You really got the impression that they all enjoyed each other and really were friends. And I was impressed with David. Like he did during the E! News set visit, he was good about talking about the others, drawing attention to the others, not just going on and on about himself as some stars tend to do. And he genuinely seemed friendly with James, often smiling and giving him friendly pats on the shoulder.

NOTE: There is some spoilerish info near the end about the 100th episode. If you don't want to know, stop reading when Ryan asks for some inside info.

First teaser during the show…

Ryan: Who is the biggest flirt on the cast of "Angel"? The stars rate each other, next.

[Cuts to live shot in green room - actually purple room - where David, James, JAR and Andy are waiting.]

[After commercial break…]

R: You know them as Vampires, demons and lawyers and they're here celebrating their 100th episode which airs TONIGHT. [Loud cheers from audience] Please welcome the cast from "Angel", David Boreanaz, James Marsters, J. August Richards, Andy Hallett.

[Cuts to the four of them standing at back of aisle between/under seats waiting to come out. They appear relaxed. James and JAR are talking, you see James smiling big and laughing a bit. They come out to LOUD screams, standing ovation from audience. Definitely fans of the show in the audience. People are holding up signs (one says JAMES MARSTERS) and pictures from the show or magazines.]

[David waves to audience. JAR gives Ryan a quick hug/pat on back. Andy and Ryan shake hands. David and James sit down on a red couchlike seat. JAR and Andy sit in tall chairs behind them. Crowd still roaring! David, JAR and Andy wave to audience. James is smiling. James sits down, legs wide (kind of like the infamous scene in Spike's apt. in "Soul Purpose". Crowd still clapping, cheering. Andy taps James on shoulder and points out to audience. James look back at Andy first then out to where he's pointing. They smile and laugh. Audience is quieting down but quite a few loud cheers still going. Someone yells out, "Spike!". David smiles, pats/rubs James on shoulder. James hangs head down kind of humble/embarrassed looking but smiling. While this last bit is happening, Ryan is trying to talk but gives up to let the cheering continue. Then says, "Oh, that won't go to their head. Do I even need to ask him a question or do you just want to stare at him."]

RS: Congratulations on everything Posse. I have the whole team here. I want to thank you for coming here, the whole gang, on the day of the 100th episode. That means a lot to us.

JM: (smiles) We could be drunk now you know. [Audience laughs, Ryan and David both say something I can't make out. James lets out one of his beautiful laughs.]

R: Angel is obviously, most people know this, is a spin-off. Spin-offs can be a very high-risk scenario. What was it, David, when you started this that you said, "Alright, I'm okay doing a spin-off in this case"?

DB: Well, Joss presented it to me and it made sense. It made sense. It made sense from this character's standpoint. He could no longer be on "Buffy" and be with Buffy, so there had to be a change. And when he presented it to me, I was actually working on the show and we were working on a period piece where we go back in time so I didn't really think much about it at the time. And it's just evolved from Season 1 to where it is now. And I've been blessed to have James come over, and Andy come over and J and Alexis and Amy, who aren't here today to say hello to all you guys. And the show has just evolved in the last four seasons and we're just really, really happy where it is right now.

JM: Basically, it doesn't suck. [Audience laughs. David laughs. Andy laughs and puts his hands on James' shoulders.] Really…

DB: (laughing) He loves that line. [audience claps]

RS: But James, was there ever a point when you said to yourself, "I don't think I'll even make it to the 100th episode?"

JM: No. I'm a glutton for punishment. Seriously, I love it. We work 12 to 15 hours every day and I love it. It's better than being home.

AH: Shall I take that question? (laughing) [James says, "Go ahead." David laughs, points at Andy and says "Andy, that's your cue." James turns toward Andy laughing a bit and says to go ahead. JAR is laughing too.]

RS: Why, what does he… what does he have in the hopper?

AH: I didn't want to jump on that one. (laughing) I'm just in the make-up for a little bit longer… three hours.

[Camera is close up on Andy. Someone off camera, James? David?, says, "Is it three hours?" Andy replies to them, nodding, "It's about three hours."]

JM: (leaning forward and turning to face Andy in teasing voice) The way you talk about it, it's like 9 hours man. [James and Andy laugh. James mimes a distressed "woe is me" kind of motion, with one hand to his forehead, leaning back quick.]

RS: We could play the other game sweeping the nation… Guess who has chemically induced hair on the set.

[Big laugh from Andy. Smiles from David and James. James laughing to himself then put finger to chin, like, "hmm, wonder who that could be?". David rests his hand on James' shoulder again and is laughing.]

DB: Well, my hair is chemically induced. [Andy smiles and sort of raises hand.]

JAR: (raises hand) Guess whose isn't? Who's all natural.

RS: I think you're what they call a "gimmie". We knew that, yeah. (JAR smiling, nods)

DB: When the show started off and then everyone kind of died off and they were looking for characters to come on. And J came on… (looking at JAR) Was it season 2 right?

JAR: Season 1

DB: Season 1, toward the end of season 1, and his impact was fantastic. We were doing a scene up on the rooftop and the two of us, we really got together real well on it and we just jibed. He's been fantastic. And then Andy came over and he's just added such a comedic level to the character. He's brought this small character and made it explode.

AH: Paul Lynde… remember when I first came on…

DB: I think his character is like Paul Lynde on acid. That's my take on it.

AH: That's what you always used to say. (everyone laughing)

DB: And James has been… having James this season for us has just been tremendous. I mean, we couldn't have a greater come over and help us out. [audience erupts in cheers]

RS: Do you guys give David a hard time for being Angel and a heartthrob? [David laughs]

JAR: No, we give him a harder time for being Mr. Mom. He's a really dedicated father and it's really cool to see him interact with his son.

RS: Are you getting better at that fathering thing?

JAR: He's always been good at it.

RS: Are you reading lots of books?

DB: I'm learning by experience. And that experience is pretty heavy.

RS: What's the strangest thing you've learned along this way, because you can't ever prepare for it.

DB: You can't because it's constantly rolling. It's ever changing and this little kid, every day he has something new to say.

RS: Anything that sticks out?

DB: He wakes up in the morning and he's like, "mom, dad" -- he's in between us -- and he says "juice". He says "juice" and I’m like, "let's get some juice kid." (smiling big)

JM: You should see him come on the set too. He's like a little producer, this high (motions a few feet up from floor.) He's like… (mimes… chin out, shoulders and arms back, looking around fearlessly). He just looks around. He has no fear.

AH: (talking to David) At the 100th … at the party, when he came out and took the cake. And you brought him over to the cake to look at the cake and he took a big piece of cake and just shoved it all over David's face. (they all laugh)

DB: They're fantastic because they make you simple. Kids are great.

[They go out to where a crowd is outside and there is a guy with a mic so people can ask questions…Note from Talkie: I'm going to skip over the chit chat, "where are you from" etc. and just get to their question and the answers.]

MicGuy: And the question is…

Woman in Crowd: David, you just directed your first episode. How is it to direct your coworkers?

DB: These guys here? (smiling) You know what, they all showed up, extremely prepared and I told them to throw everything out the window, do what you do best, and they were fantastic with it. I mean, everybody was very supportive. So it made my job a lot easier. Look, I know what these guys can do. I’m not going to sit there and tell you have to do them to do this and this and this. There are little things you kind of want to maneuver and stuff, but they're professionals. They bring something to the table. That's why they got hired. That's why they're doing this job. That's what makes them so great so you let that confidence ride and you'd be amazed at how beautiful things happen.

JAR: But now lie, the crew, the entire crew, felt that David was one of the best directors we've had since the beginning. (James is nodding his head vigorously up and down in agreement.) And that's not even an exaggeration. That's not being nice.

JM: That's not Hollywood crap. Seriously... (Ryan interrupts him…)

RS: So it's not one of those situations where the STAR just wants to be a director? (James shakes his head "no". Meanwhile David is silently reaching into his jeans pocket. Pulls out some money and starts to hand it to JAR. JAR and AH laughingly reach for it.)

JM: It's going to take more than a twenty. (looks over at it as David is putting it away) Oh it's a $100?! Oh, I've got…

JM: They were begging us. They were saying, get him to direct again when we're really tired. Because if they get a bad director when we're really tired, we'll probably quit. So please get David back when we need him.

RS: Can you give us some inside information on what's going to happen on the big episode?

DB: Oh man. It's so much that's going on. I mean, we've seen this crew from where it was on day one and we go back in Angel's past, everyone who's had an impact on the first show. And there's a nice tribute to Glenn Quinn, who passed away unfortunately last year, who played Doyle. [cheers from audience] Charisma. Charisma Carpenter wakes up from her coma. And uh, you know, Joss Whedon creates again a story that is a bit of a tear jerker. And there's a big sword fight with me and Lindsey at the end and these guys are along for the ride. And I think it's the first time Charisma pushes my character over the edge and says you've got to get out there and start making an impact, a difference in your character. Stop wallowing around being depressed. You know, do what you do best, and that's kicking some a**. And that's basically what happens.

[audience cheers]

RS: (to camera) So the a** kicking ensues tonight on the 100th episode of "Angel". (turning back to James) Hey, did you see…

DB: Oh, I've got something for you…

RS: At the top of the show he's talking about that little announcement…

DB: But I brought something for you.

RS: You've got something for me?

DB: James, didn't you bring it?

JM: Oh yeah. [crew woman comes out and hands James a fake human leg and foot skeleton] We have to give you our bone.

DB: This is a gift for you.

RS: This is a gift you brought that we decided to make clue number 2. Alright, this is clue number 2. [some contest to figure out who their mystery guest is. Meanwhile, James is holding the leg up, kind of displaying it.] This is from the set of "Angel." What is it?

JM: It's David Greenwalt. (everyone laughs) This is the only thing that's left of him. He's not with the show any more.

DB: What size is that? (holding out his leg)

JM: (standing up) It's a big ole bone David. (James unfolds the bone at the knee so it becomes a full leg. He sets the foot part on the floor and holds it next to his own leg.) Oh I guess not. It's a little bone. [James folds it back in half. Ryan tells him to give it to an audience member so James walks over to the front row of the audience and hands it to a young woman. Then walks back to the couch by David.]

edited by Talkie to add remaining transcript. Then edited again for a couple of typos and name correction. (Thanks WM! I was trying to be accurate but I'm falling asleep at my computer. Yikes, now I have to go edit the conference program book for my organization's national conference, which is in two weeks. Can't wait until Feb. 21 when my life should return to it's normal crazed pace. )

It's a Very Vampy Birthday for Angel--and You're Invited to the Party

by Kristin | Feb. 6, 2004
(The artist formerly known as Wanda)

Angel turned 100 this week. And, hot damn, that boy still looks fine.

To celebrate, I'm letting the show's entire gang (all seven castmembers and creator Joss Whedon) do the talking, thanks to one-on-one interviews and video clips from the 100th-episode celebration.

You have to be an E! Online Insider to watch the clips, but signing up is totally quick and painless--unlike, I'm sure, Spike's lovemaking. Mmm...

Up first, that soulless vamp who started it all. No, not that one. The other one. You know, Angel himself: David Boreanaz.

One hundred episodes. Must feel good.
Yes. I never imagined the show getting to 100 episodes. I only imagined getting the work done that was in front of me. When we started this journey four and a half seasons ago, David Greenwalt and Joss Whedon were like, "One down, 99 to go," and I was like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa--I need to focus on this scene we're shooting on the rooftop." And here we are.

And now Cordelia's gone. Will Angel ever get some lovin'?
That's always been a sore subject for him. He just can't seem to find the right girl. I think that because of his character, if she can't keep his interest, he'll be pretty quick to move on.

You have sparks of a different kind with Spike.
Yeah, it's been pretty hostile lately, and it will simmer a little bit, but that conflict between them will always remain. At the bottom of it all, there is respect.

Right. And you can respect the fact that he kicked your ass.
He didn't kick my ass! [Laughs.] It was fake. It's all pitiful. I'll come back. We've had many battles, and he may have beat me that time, but we still have nine episodes to go.

And after that? Another season?
It's the same thing every season: You don't know. I think our show is open to another season. I'm proud we've gotten to 100. But I'm really itching to explore other characters and do other projects. I think I've been stuck in this medical school for a while, and I need to open up and get out. I look forward to that, and there's part of me that wants to explore. I don't know. I always evaluate that at the end of every season, and I will at the end of this one. I'll think about where I'm at when it's time.

Charisma Carpenter: Cordelia

How's the reunion?
It's good to be back. Totally different and completely the same, all at the same time. It's surreal. I remember the first day Joss put his arm around my neck and said, "What do you think of a spinoff?" And I was like, "Eek, I don't know. What if it flops?" And he told me he'd never put me out there without a safety net. And here we are--well, here they are--100 episodes later.

Do you think you'll come back again?
I don't think so, no. I think this is it.

No! Why?
The thing about Cordelia is that her stories have been told. I think this is it. And what a time to go--the 100th episode. I think everything has been explored for her. And it's really a sweet, sweet episode. Joss had written me a note and said this is one of the sweeter stories we've ever told. And I agree.

Do you pay attention to what the fans are saying?
Well, my mom tells me what they say online, on the Internet, and I think they're pissed, you know? I think they're pissed that she's not back for good...But I think the 100th episode gives some closure. It's good for the fans. It was essential to get it situated, because it would have been a horrible crime if we left her in a coma. Joss never wanted to do that, either.

And now you're a mom.
Yes. I always, always wanted to be a mom. I thought I'd be a mom a long time ago. Like, at 22 or 23, I thought I'd be a mom and be married. But here I am, Hollywood woman, working and having a baby. [My son] was here earlier, hanging with us, but he fell asleep amidst all the cake-cutting festivities. It was like, "Hey, Mom, congratulations...ugh, I'm over it."

Andy Hallett: Lorne

So, 100 episodes. How does it feel?
Yawn. You're going to start with that?

Okay--when was the last time you were naked in public?
Oh, 25 minutes ago. Back at Stage Four with the caterers. No, really, naked in public? Mardi Gras three years ago. I walked off the plane and was like, "I can't believe people expose themselves for beads! I would never do that!" My friends found me three hours later in a ditch, covered in beads. Now, what was the first question?

One hundred episodes.
Right. I came in at the beginning of season two with hopes of appearing a couple of times, and I never thought it would come to this. I did 53 episodes as a guest character. I sort of felt like part of the team already, but last season, Joss called me, out of the blue, and said, "What do you think about coming onboard?" And it was great and shocking. What made it really extra special, the nicest part of it, was he said, "We don't know if the show is going to get picked up next year. So, if it doesn't go, I'd like you to be able to say you were a regular castmember." Which I thought was really cool.

And now you're wasting away in the makeup chair.
Yeah, I'm the only mother that has to sit in there for three hours. Have you seen Dane Johnson running around here? He's head of the makeup department, and he's armed and dangerous, with an airbrush. He came up to me and said I was getting Duo next year, which is a weak glue that keeps on women's eyelashes. David Boreanaz gets it, so he can just peel off his makeup, it's so easy for him. But, my dear, if I were to peel my makeup off, I would look like Freddy Krueger. It would peel off layers of skin! David gets a kick out of trying to pull my makeup off...What was the question?

We'll just move on. Do you ever get recognized?
Working on Angel has been my first real gig, and you know, I'm green. But, one time--this is hilarious: My good drag-queen friend used to perform up at the Queen Mary in the Valley. It was a landmark, a famous drag-queen landmark for years. And Miss Patrice would get up there, and sometimes I would sing with her--not in drag--and she could sing her ass off...and what was my point? Oh yeah, some guy said he knew me from looking at my eyes. And I was like, No way. I mean, first of all, I wear red contacts.

If you tell me what's coming up on the show, I'll be your best friend.
I haven't the foggiest, I swear to God. The policy of Joss Whedon and the other producers is that they are very secretive. I think that's cool, because it provides a very spontaneous vibe for everybody. The actors are just as surprised as the viewers.

J. August Richards: Gunn

Man, you've changed.
I'm having a blast. My character has gone from being this scraggly, rough, homeless vampire hunter to this serious, methodical lawyer; the adjustment has been tremendous. I have to do what Alexis used to do: deliver very long paragraphs to tell the audience what's going on. I'm falling all over my words.

Are you getting a love interest?
On the show?

No, in real life.
[Laughs.] My character has either attacked or kissed everybody on the show. Gunn is attracted to every woman who walks in the door, so I'm sure it won't be long before I have another love interest. I gotta put the feelers out, and maybe something will come back.

Tell us the truth. Was David horrible as a director?
I'll be honest. When I first heard David was directing, I was like, "Lord, we ain't going to get nothing done." [Laughs.] But he was one of the most accomplished and focused directors we've had, and the insight he gave me as an actor was mind-blowing. I was like, "I didn't know you watched my work that tight."

Are you hoping for another season?
Definitely. Now that my character has changed, I feel like we've just started. Gunn's so much more like me now, which is a good thing. The words are words I would use, but this character is very much a child at heart. He still seems like a different person, but he's a lot closer to me.

How was the reunion with Charisma?
Fantastic. We couldn't have done the 100th episode without her. It's like she never left, except now she has a little boy with her. This is the baby set. I'm one of the few childless people on the set, and I want to keep it that way. Everyone is popping out babies and getting married. Be careful, I think there's something in the water.

Alexis Denisof: Wesley
First things first. How is married life?
It's fantastic. I love it. I mean, I'm very proud of the show and all the work here--I'm proud of lots of things in my life. But definitely, the happiest moment has to be taking that step with Alyson [Hannigan]. She was radiant that day, and we went out on our honeymoon, and we just blissed out. I don't remember my feet touching the ground. We could be together in a trailer in Alabama and be happy.

And this milestone on the show?
It feels good. I mean, it's like we put 100,000 miles on the clock, but it's a new car, and it just goes and goes. I think this season has got everybody really excited with the new energy, new characters, new sets, new storylines. There's a lot going on, and that's exciting for all of us.

Has it been tough playing the same character for so long?
Never. I had to adjust to it, to be perfectly honest. I was used to quick turnover in characters, hadn't really experienced this longevity with a role. But I was fortunate with this role because I've grown and changed a lot, especially going back to Buffy, when I was this big, irritating dork.

Joss has a way of throwing curveballs, doesn't he?
Yes. Unlike many shows, where the characters are forced to stay the same and let the events around them change, Joss encourages the events to affect the characters and really change them. He never lets it stay the same. Which is very brave--sometimes you feel like you're crashing into a wall, and there are going to be pieces all around. I don't know how he does it. He's insane, that Joss Whedon. That's the only explanation I have. The man is insane.

Amy Acker: Fred

We know you're close with Joss. So, spill. What's going to happen?
Actually, Joss just told us the things that would happen at the end of this season and the beginning of next season. They sounded really cool. It's not the way I thought it would go at all. It's going to be intense. Literally, he told us, "Last night I thought of how the season is going to end." So, he just came up with it. He's really brilliant, not just in the show, but with anything he does.

How was it to see Charisma again?
Awesome. She's a mom and all happy and looks beautiful. We were all happy to have her back on the show for at least a couple of days.

How do you feel about Buffy vets coming to your show?
It's good! I wish I knew more about them--my character was never on Buffy. When James Marsters came on the show, I hadn't met him, but everyone told me he was great. He and Mercedes McNab bring a new energy to the show.

What do the fans say to you?
Well, I don't get recognized a lot, so I haven't had too many weird interactions. But, it's funny, when I got on the show, my parents started having parties every time it was on, with 15 or 20 of their friends, who are in their fifties and live in Texas. Now I get calls from all of their friends who are addicted to the show, and they're like, "We'd even watch it if you weren't on it." It's always the people who you wouldn't think would be audience members who really love it.

Do you ever read what the fans say online?
Alexis gave me a piece of advice. I went on there, and there were probably 30 great things and one bad thing and he said, "You only remember the one bad thing." So, I try not to read that stuff, but I think it's good even if people don't like it. They're passionate. And it's our job to get a reaction out of people.

James Marsters: Spike

How's your new home?
On Buffy, it was like being at a buffet and just getting a little bit. Now, they are piling it on so much I'm weary. But it's exactly what I wanted.

And working with David Boreanaz? Be honest.
Hollywood has not changed David one iota. He's the same guy I met all those years ago. The rest of the cast is in that same envelope--really supportive. And that's a gift, because a lot of your life is spent here.

And you get to beat up Angel.
Yeah, man. It's good to get Spike and Angel together and let them just beat the living hell out of each other. That sets up a great arc for Angel. Spike seems to be a bit of a mirror for Angel. They both are vampires with souls, they've both had a very long lifetime, and they both have a huge amount of guilt and regret. So, there's a lot more dramatic potential between the two than I first realized.

So much in common...Do you think they'll ever reconcile?
To evolve the relationship from where it is now, which is deep distrust...I wouldn't want to move away from that very quickly, because I think it's a good place to be for a while. I think it challenges Angel in a very deep way. It would be kind of weird if the two of them were steadfast buddies. So, yeah, Spike and Angel? They're not gonna kiss.

Another season--yay or nay? What's your gut feeling?
That is a political game. There are bosses, and bosses above bosses, and I'm so glad I'm not involved in that decision. But our product is solid, and it's pretty amazing. I think we could go another 100.

Do you have that much Spike left in you?
I have a deep sense that I am going to work in the field of acting for as long as I want. I may not make huge money, but I'll make a living. So, if Spike is around 10 years, I'll be around for another 30. As long as people are interested in Spike and the metaphors are used in a responsible way and not just for flash, he'll be around. And I'll be happy.

Joss Whedon: The Creator

Amy Acker says you know how the season ends.

Okay, Miss I-Won't-Ask-About-Spoilers! [Laughs.] I was upstairs working on the episode that I'm going to direct, and it occurred to me that it was going to change things for the group.

I felt we needed to pay service to the gravity of what we are dealing with. They are in a nest of vipers and working for terrible people. I had already pitched the very end, but we were trying to figure out how we get to the end without the same old, "Oh, here comes an apocalypse, we better stop it!" We've been there, done that. It's like a crutch. I'm like an addict. I can't go a season on a show without an apocalypse. There probably would have been one on Firefly. So, this is different. I was upstairs in my study free-associating late one night, and I realized, "Omigod, this isn't just an apocalypse. This is how I need to answer the question about Wolfram & Hart." And you'll never get the answer out of me.

Fair enough. Do you think we'll ever again see Buffy or Willow on Angel?
Alyson was obviously on the show last year, and that was a lot of fun--we just love having her around. And Willow is somebody I'd love to see on the show again. Buffy, that's sort of up to her. If she's interested in doing an episode, we'd always make room. There are two guys in the cast who are in love with her, so it's not like she has nothing to play. But it's really her call.

Did you ever think you'd make it to 100 episodes?
I always thought I'd make it to 100 episodes. I didn't have any idea what kind of show I'd have on my hands, the show has mutated so much, but you don't start making a show going, "This will be three episodes and out. Who's with me?!" You have to have that energy. But I have to admit, there were times that I doubted. There was no doubt in my mind we had 100 stories in us--it was whether we'd get to tell them.

Do you feel there's more life left in the show?
Totally. I may not feel that way at the end of next year's season, but right now everyone feels vital and excited. We have a lot more paradigm to cover. If they cancel us, we'll go out with a bang, but if they don't, we'll just keep bangin'.
