Mountain Dew?

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) -- The third "Scooby-Doo" live action movie is already in the planning stages even before the release of "Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed" next week (Friday, March 26). But, producers confirm that the actors could be different from the current star-studded cast of crime-busters in Mystery Inc.
"We could do this without one or two of the actors playing the roles," says Richard Suckle, who produced the first two Scooby movies for Warner Bros. and oversaw the look of the computer-animated dog. "It's a good thing we have Scooby under contract, though."

Producer Charles Roven tells Zap2it.com, "We have one or two of the team not committed to the next movie yet, but we're still working on the second, It's too early to talk about the third."

However, Zap2it has confirmed that Matthew Lillard, as Shaggy, and Linda Cardellini, as Velma, are already on board for the third Scooby film. So is director Raja Gosnell, and screenwriter James Gunn, who wrote the first two films, is already working on the next installment.

"It's about the characters, not the personalities," the director says about the cast he handpicked for "Scooby-Doo" and "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed." Gosnell was surprised to discover that Freddie Prince Jr., playing Fred, wasn't giving interviews to Internet press, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays Daphne, wasn't talking to any press for Scooby.

"I can't get into Freddie's mind, I'm sorry," says the director.

Sources on the "Scooby 2" Vancouver set have told Zap2it that the real-life couple Gellar and Prince were demanding of the crew and uncooperative with press invited to the set during filming.

'Firefly' feature alights 03/21/2004
Sat Mar 20, 7:00 PM ET

Gabriel Snyder, STAFF

Last month, Universal greenlit "Serenity," a feature based on Joss Whedon's TV show "Firefly," which Fox canceled in 2002 after airing only 11 episodes.
The film biz is filled with adaptations of hit TV series, such as "Charlie's Angels" and "Starsky & Hutch." But it's rare when a feature is based on a nonhit, such as the six-episode "Naked Gun" and the never-aired-pilot "Mulholland Dr." In each of those cases, the pics featured the original contributors of series -- and went on to significant bigscreen success.
"Serenity" is hoping to similarly rewrite the TV-to-film rules. But then, breaking the rules is familiar territory to Whedon, who created the series and will direct the film.
Five years after the 1992 film "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" opened to ho-hum box office, he used the material to create a TV show that became a seven-year hit and even spawned a spinoff, "Angel."
Now he's reversing that process with "Serenity."
While Universal's decision may seem like an eyebrow-raiser, it's closer to a no-brainer: The risk is modest, and the rewards could be plentiful.
With a first-time director and no pricey stars (Adam Baldwin (news), Morena Baccarin (news), Sean Maher), the pic is a bargain, particularly for a sci-fi actioner: under $40 million. Most of it will be shot on stages on the U lot. The handful of locations will be in the L.A. area.
In addition, "Firefly" has a loyal fan base. A number of Internet fan sites, such as CHUD.com www.CHUD.com continue to dissect "Firefly," follow Whedon's career and swap series action figures.
"If you strike a chord with fans of science-fiction adventure, they're never going away," Whedon says.
This would seem to ensure a built-in audience for "Serenity" at the box office and afterward. The "Firefly" DVD has sold a surprising 200,000 copies since it was released last December. (The release fortuitously came out while U execs were debating greenlighting the pic.)
Underlying the deal was U's desire to be in business with Whedon. His shingle, Mutant Enemy, has an exclusive television deal with Fox and no motion picture deal. U execs, particularly vice chair Mary Parent, had been trying to figure out a way to work with Whedon for years.
Fox had touted "Firefly" for its 2002 season as a show that could potentially fill the sci-fi gap in its sked created by the end of the aging "X-Files" franchise. The concept was to set an ensemble of characters familiar from Westerns (the noble outlaw, the hard-scrabble preacher, the practical prostitute) in outer space 500 years in the future.
But just 11 of the 14 "Firefly" episodes produced made it to air. Interrupted by baseball and dropped for November sweeps (much to Whedon's chagrin), the show never caught on with a big enough audience to justify its 8 p.m. Friday slot (the show averaged a 2.1 rating and a 7 share; it also briefly ran at 9 p.m.).
Just before Christmas, Fox pulled the plug, using "Fastlane," which would itself later be yanked, as a replacement.
After the cancellation, Whedon sat down with Chris Buchanan, the president of his production company, and his longtime agent Chris Harbert of CAA and started brainstorming how they could keep the project alive.
Per-episode production costs were high. They mulled cable and tossed around the idea of a miniseries. The very last idea on their list was turning to a movie studio to make a feature version.
So Universal stepped in, purchased "Firefly" rights from Fox and gave it a greenlight.
Thus, U and Whedon are fulfilling the fantasy of every TV writer who has had a show canned after just a few episodes.
"You have no idea what this means to writers," Whedon says. "You took something you love and you got a second shot. Do you know how often that happens to writers? Never."

"Angel flies to TNT in reruns"

By Kare O'Hare
Zap2it

Although he felt that Angel could go on "to season 6 and beyond", JM will likely depart the show at the end of this season as one happy actor. In mid-Feb, execs at The WB chose not to renew AtS for another year, so the Buffy spinoff comes to a close in May after 5 season and a little over 100 episodes.
After Buffy ended last year, Marsters brought himself and his character, the Britpunk vampire Spike, over to AtS, which also airs weekdays in reruns on TNT.
"I felt like, over on Buffy, I was at a feast where my plate was smaller than everyone else's," Marsters says, in an interview conducted before the cancellatioan announcement. "If you counted the pages, Spike averaged about 3 pages an episode, and that had to do with just getting him in the room more than anyghing else. I'm not complaining. I'm surprised they were able to fit that character in at all."
"But, I also felt like, 'Everyone else has got all these beautiful, wonderful jokes and great plays on words' What I got was fabulous----I just wanted to act more, I wanted to be here more.
"Now they've heaped my plate so full that I'm stretched to the breaking point. It's everything that I dreamed of. Now, the other side's starting to look sweet. Boy, I was well rested back then."
After slowly changing from Buffy's (SMG) foe to her reluctant ally to her eventual love interest, Spike sacrificed himself to save the world in the series finale. But Angel wanted him too, so Spike's sojourn into the Great Beyond was cut short.
He soon appeared---1st in ghostly form, then later corporeal---in the LA office of the evil law firm Wolfram & Hart, now being run by Spike's mentor, nemesis and cheif rival for Buffy's affections, the do-gooder vampire Angel (DB).
So the only 2 vamps w/ souls (and therefore consciences and moral compasses) became very reluctant allies in the fight against evil---that is, when they weren't fighting w/each other.
Marsters wasn't all that nuts about being a ghost for several episodes at the beginning of the season.
"Techinically, it was really a pain, frankly, setting up those shots where you go through a wall. It burns a lot of the day, and it takes away from acting, which is what I'm here for."
"Angel, in his evil, pre-soul days, taught young vampire Spike how to live the bloodsucker's life, which was a far cry from his mortal existence as William, a tortured Victorian poet.
"Spike is a bit of a doppelganger for Angel," Marsters says, "and so, functionally, it was good to start on the thematic level, an almost human level, as opposed to just rocking it out w/ a huge fight right off the bat."
Forced to talk instead of fighting, the 2 characters got a chance to work out their differences.
"It's an older bro/younger bro thing," Marsters says. "That's how it feels. At the point when William met Angel, he was everything you'd want to be. He was cool; he was dark; he was mysterious."
"You get the sense with William that he didn't really have a strong father figure in his life, so he looked up to Angel pretty quickly."
Although no one but the writers know how the show will ultimately end (and The WB is talking about doing TV movies), Marsters has a specific goal for his character.
"What I hope can happen for Spike is that he will impact Angel & send him on a forver more interesting arc towrds redemption. It's Angel's show. It will not work any other way."

Geroneja(03/22/04 17:18:49)

Sarah Michelle Gellar's deal to resurrect Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the May 19 series finale of Angel is all but signed in blood: "If she's available, she'll do it," her manager promises.

As a result, viewers may finally learn who the Chosen One's ... um, chosen one.

"Definitely, the question of Angel versus Spike looms large in Buffy's mind and in the minds of fans," says Joss Whedon, who created both shows. "But I'm not saying whether or not I have decided to answer it."

What Whedon may mean is that he hasn't decided how he will answer it -- regardless of Gellar's involvement or how neatly the loose ends are tied up.

"Angel and Spike will ultimately feel some kind of resolve about their conflict over Buffy," he insists, adding quickly that the tug-of-war over Sunnydale's stake-driving heroine will not rule the episode.

"It won't be all about that."

We'll bite If the long-running love triangle won't be the focus, what will the episode be about?

"The whole point of Angel is the idea of the fight and how it never stops," Whedon hints. "The finale was always meant to be open-ended in some respect. That doesn't mean I won't kill everybody, but I might not (explain) why."

In the meantime, Whedon will be welcoming back some other familiar faces.

Michelle Trachtenberg is in talks to reprise her role as Buffy's kid sis Dawn for an early May episode that will also feature the toothsome tag team of Julie Benz (Darla) and Juliet Landau (Dru).

But let's face it -- Gellar is the "get" that any apocalypse has got to have.

"Look, she either wants to or she doesn't," shrugs Whedon. "I'm counting on the ensemble I have now. It'd be swell to have her join them."

City of Angel:

Return of the Spirit Boy

an exclusive Spotlight on Christian Kane

hen Angel pushed Wolfram & Hart client, Russell Winters, out of a high-story window during his first ever mission for the Powers That Be, not only did his actions alert the law firm’s Senior Partners to his presence in the City of Angels but it also saw him come face to face with their golden boy, Lindsey McDonald. What began as a seemingly harmless standoff between the two soon ignited into a long-term rivalry with Champion and Lawyer constantly fighting to see who would gain the upper hand (until Angel chopped Lindsey’s off that is.) On screen, Angel and Lindsey despise everything that each other stand for, sharing hatred, jealousy and contempt. Off-screen nothing could be further from the truth as the long-standing friendship that exists between actors David Boreanaz and Christian Kane could only ever see them swapping memories of good times rather than swapping punches. As Lindsey McDonald, Christian portrays a man driven by ambition and it is a trait very much reflected in the man behind the morally-questionable lawyer as he strives to be successful in his two chosen passions, music and acting. During a recent visit to London, Christian, along with friend and guitarist from their band KANE, Steve Carlson, kindly spent a few moments of their time to share with CoA desires and dreams for both.

WEST COAST BECKONS SOUTHERN ROOTS

The first impression you get when you meet Christian Kane is that here is a man who is intensely proud of his heritage as he comes across every inch a cowboy. Born in Dallas, Texas in 1974, his father’s career in the oil-business pretty much called for him and his family to move across various locations throughout the Southland before finally settling in a small town called Norman in Oklahoma. Christian spent much of his childhood in movie theaters watching his favorite actors on screen and aspiring to be in their company. Chris actually pinpoints the performance of Tom Cruise as the rebellious fighter pilot, Pete ’Maverick’ Mitchell in the 1986 classic Top Gun as the turning point at which he decided he wanted to become an actor. Strangely, when he attended the University of Oklahoma after leaving high school, he decided to major in Art History rather than drama but the pull of Hollywood still appealed to him in a way that his studies didn’t. Rather than continue with something that didn’t inspire him, Christian soon dropped out of university making the brave decision to take a chance and pursue his dream of appearing on stage or screen. Music had become a deep influence in his life as he often found himself singing back-up on stage with his cousin Brandon Hart but Christian had his sights set on an acting career and so armed with no more than $300 in his pocket, he packed up all he had in a pickup truck and moved to Los Angeles.

Like any potential Hollywood young blood, the roles he yearned for didn’t just fall into his lap and Christian had to work as a production assistant and mailroom clerk for a talent agency just to make ends meet. His patience and endless rounds of auditions paid off in 1997 though as he landed the role of Ryan ’Flyboy’ Legget in a funny case of what seemed to be life imitating art. "My first role ever was one of the lead actors on Fame L.A.," he explains, "And so during that time I had to play a country singer that moved in from Kansas." Fame L.A. was a revamped version of a popular 80’s show based around the famous New York School for Performing Arts. In taking the lead role Christian not only had the opportunity to act but to sing which for someone who had never been in front of a camera before was pretty daunting. "I kind of busted my chops," he says, "I did a little acting and I did a little singing and Prescott Niles taught me how to play guitar for that show. He was the bassist for The Knack. I kind of also had to learn how to act. It was my first role and they just threw me on and it was nice that I got to do both at the same time, they kind of came up together." Working right alongside Christian in the pilot episode of that series was a familiar face and someone he would work with once more during his future role of Lindsey McDonald. "Thomas Burr (also known as Wolfram & Hart stooge lawyer Lee Mercer) was in the pilot," he confirms, "He’s a good buddy of mine. It was such a comforting thing to see him on Angel, it just kind of made me feel at home."

HELLO, HANDSOME GOODNESS!

Although Fame L.A. actually completed a full season run of 22-episodes, the ratings for the show were not quite as the producing studio, MGM, had hoped and it was subsequently cancelled. Unfortunately the next role Christian landed, that of the courageous, wild and shameless Wick Lobo in the WB’s Rescue 77 met with the same fate yet Christian was undeterred. Secure in the belief of his own talent ability, he landed a small part in the 1999 film EDTV before securing the role that was to bring him recognition and kudos. Ironically Christian was blissfully unaware that the character of scheming young Wolfram & Hart attorney Lindsey McDonald even existed. Rather than looking to be added to the cast of new spin-off series Angel, Christian was aiming to be included in the Season 4 line-up of its parent show, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, as he auditioned for a character who was the antithesis of the man he eventually got to play. "I started out for Riley," he says, "but my good buddy [Mark] Blucas got it." Christian openly admits that he played his audition for Riley perhaps a little less than wholesome and it worked for him in a way he couldn’t have imagined, "I think Joss [Whedon] saw me as a darker character and so just brought me on for the pilot of Angel."

Lindsey McDonald made his Whedon-verse debut in the opening episode of Angel, giving Christian the chance to work with long-time friend David Boreanaz. He actually recalls his opening scene in the episode "City of..." as one of his favourite moments from his entire time on Angel, " It was the first time David and me ever got to act together and there was just a chemistry. There was something. Neither one of us was on the same page and he was a badass and I was trying to be a badass and that right there was just a defining moment. You could tell the tension but you could also see the easiness of how we just flowed into each other. It’s very easy to act with Boreanaz and I think he feels the same with me. It’s something that we do, you know, we walk in and we feed off each other and it’s great." Although he made his introductory appearance in the premiere episode, Lindsey didn’t show himself again until episode 18, "Five by Five". By this time Angel was proving to be a major thorn in the side of his employers and the young associate tried to enroll the help of rogue slayer Faith to eliminate the problem, all the while trying to get one over on his beautiful co-conspirator, Lilah Morgan. Lilah played by the ever-stunning Stephanie Romanov made her presence known a couple of episodes previous in "The Ring" and although her initial attraction towards Angel was a little obvious, what developed over the next few episodes and into the next season was an incredible dynamic between Lilah and Lindsey. "There’s a lot of sexual tension between Lindsay and Lilah," Christian agrees, "and Stephanie being one of my really good friends in life, it really did kind of feel like it was us against the world. Everyone else was a series regular and we were fighting for a pole position and although we were against each other we were on the same team. It was a very weird dynamic but it was me and her against everybody else and I think that came off on screen."

As an instrument of evil, Lindsey impressed without effort and it was clear that the Senior Partners had him earmarked for success. The one thing they hadn’t accounted for however was the conscience that was buried deep down inside of Lindsey, which reared his head on occasion and that incredibly he also had a heart. Falling in love with the sire of his greatest enemy (Darla, portrayed by Julie Benz) allowed Lindsey to be ruled by his heart in defiance of Wolfram & Hart’s wishes. His vendetta against Angel became personal. He had lost his hand and the woman he loved to the vampire with a soul and his need for vengeance was in stark contrast to the plans that his bosses had. Yet despite that they were still willing to give him everything only for Lindsey to turn his back on them. He had already fought a battle of faith with his bosses when they had attempted to clear the name of potential child killer, Vanessa Brewer, but once he discovered that an innocent person had been butchered in order to give him his new hand, he found that he was doing the unthinkable of working alongside his enemy, Angel, for the second time in the Season 2 episode "Dead End". Although Lindsey may have resented working one-on-one with Angel, Christian relishes the opportunity to act alongside David and recalls the raiding of the Wolfram & Hart body shop in that episode as another of his favorite moments from his time on the series. "When we’re driving in the car, it was five o’clock in the morning, the sun was getting ready to come up and it was the last shot of the day and it’s colder than @#%$," he jokingly recalls. "We’re in a convertible car and it was so easy. It’s very easy to act with him and it’s really not a big scene but it was just me and David. Five o’clock, very tired, very cold and we’re driving in this car and we got it done. There was a lot of dialogue and there were a lot of emotions going on in that time and it was very simple." As the sun set on his ’good deed’ Lindsey left Wolfram & Hart blaming his ’evil hand issues’ and Christian left the series and his fans behind. Just for the time being, anyway.

SKY’S GONNA OPEN...

Although his character left for pastures anew, Christian didn’t go without leaving a little piece of his amazing talent ingrained in the memories of every Angel fan on earth. His incredible acting ability goes without question but in "Dead End", we also had the privilege to finally hear Christian sing. "David Greenwalt wrote the song and Steve Carlson played it and so it was a pre-recording," Christian says of the song L.A. which Lindsey performs on the Caritas stage, "Steve played all the good stuff, he went in..." At this point, Christian’s fellow band-member Steve Carlson interrupts, "We did it together," he corrects before allowing Christian to resume his story. "We really liked the song." Christian continues, "And it was natural. We went in there and in two takes it was done. What was nice about that was that David Greenwalt was actually in the studio when we did it so David would tell us, ’Well I had this in mind’, but it was only two takes, so we were all on the same page. David Greenwalt is actually a good piano player and a music fan. He is very much music oriented and it’s what he used to do actually, play music, so he already had a taste for it. I sat down in David’s office and we came up with a little riff and then David called me back and said I’ve got the song and he wrote it."

Since leaving Angel, Christian has made his fair share of film appearances accumulating a healthy resume of co-stars as well as reuniting with some old friends along the way. In 2001, Christian got to strap on the spurs and hit the trail for TNT with western veteran Tom Selleck in Louis L’Amour’s Crossfire Trail. Following with, Summer Catch, as he plays alongside the man that beat him to the role of Initiative guinea-pig Riley Finn in BtVS, Marc Blucas as well as the man that was to eventually ’marry’ Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s, husband Freddie Prinze Jr.. In Life or Something Like It he plays the role of Cal Cooper opposite Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft, Angelina Jolie and he could draw on his own personal experiences of living in Texas and Oklahoma when he took the lead role in Crooked E: The Unshredded Truth about Enron based on a booked by Brian Cruver. The role Christian actually admits to being "his favourite role to date" is that of Young Hub in the 2003 film Secondhand Lions. Although his speaking part is restricted to just one line at the very end of the film, Christian gets to play a younger version of one of his screen idols, Robert Duvall and he describes that experience as a "defining moment." He also realised another ambition when he got the opportunity to work with Luc Besson in a remake of a French film Taxi alongside Queen Latifah, to date that film is currently in post-production.

PASADENA, MEET OKLAHOMA

Music is the other passion that encapsulates Christian and his band, formed in 1998, KANE is the brainchild of two extremely talented musicians, Christian and Steve Carlson who met when Steve took over Christian’s job! "I got a job when I first got to L.A.," Steve tells us, "And I went to work for a production company and they were like, ’Oh the guy who worked this job before has just got a job on a show called Fame L.A.’ and so I went in and he [Christian] ended up coming back and we met through that." Born in Pasadena, Steve has honed his love for music from a very early age confessing to writing songs and playing guitar from as early an age as 10 years old. This dedication and passion is reflected in the way he plays and in his partnership and friendship with Christian. KANE has created their own style and niche of what they call ’outlaw country’. Currently residing high in the hills of Hollywood, Steve recalls the first time the KANE song writing partnership struck gold, "I threw a party one night and invited him and at midnight we were all upstairs playing music and he started singing with us. He like pulled me aside and said, ’How do you know all these country songs?’ because we were playing stuff like The Eagles and Hank Williams and David Allen Coe and all sorts of stuff. I told him my parents kind of raised me on country music. He said, ’Well we should write some time’ and we got together and we wrote "The Chase" and then we wrote "Spirit Boy". Then we had friends who were like, ’It’s my birthday next week, will you guys come and play those two songs?’ so we’d play like two songs and we’d throw in a couple of cover songs and then it was like we had a whole set."

The talents of a fiddle player by the name of Craig Eastman caught the attention of both Steve and Christian, "We are both big fans of our fiddle player," Christian enthuses, "He was just amazing and we were like, ’How do we get him?’ and luckily he started playing with us. A lot of our sound comes through Craig Eastman." Both fans and critics alike pay testimony to that comment as Craig’s collaboration along with Christian and Steve (and additional guitarist Michael Eaton for a time) has seen KANE produce an incredible ’live’ set, which has been performed, enjoyed and critically acclaimed in venues all across the coast of California including Johnny Depp’s Viper Room, King King, Ivar and the Warner Bros Sizzlin’ Country fundraiser, as well as taking their music into the heart of Country itself, Nashville. A recent acoustic set played at an event in London in November 2003 won the band a whole new set of fans in a country that is not exactly renowned for its mainstream love of country music. Enjoying what they do is paramount to Christian and Steve and their love of performing and being on stage is something they inevitably pass to their audience. That’s just how they like it and how they want it to continue for some time to come, "We want longevity," explains Christian, "We want people to listen to our music and sing along. We want it to be something you sing in the shower. We want to have fun with it and I want to quote Garth Brooks real quick because it’s the same thing that happens for me. "No matter how drunk you are or whatever you’re doing, the people who are having the most fun at the show are me and Steve!" Christian on playing music

No matter who’s at the show, no matter how drunk you are or whatever you’re doing, the people who are having the most fun at the show are me and Steve, it really is. We’re having the most fun you can possibly have. I think what we’d like to do is just keep the fun going. It’s very much exhilarating and, like I said earlier, it’s almost a drug and I think we’d just like longevity. We’d like people to listen to our stuff and move, you know, and if you’re cooking dinner and it comes on the radio we’d like you to shake your ass a little bit or if you’re in the car maybe you drive a little faster, stuff like that. We really want people to have a good time with our music and I think that’s what it is. We’re not out to be Kid Rock, just as long as people are having a good time."

Loving KANE’s music and their songs is one thing but getting access to it is another and has proven to be one of the frustrating matters for both the band and its followers alike. Voted by industry magazine Music Connection as "One of L.A.’s 100 Hottest Unsigned Bands", KANE’s first album was self-produced and as a result meant that it could only be accessed by downloading or purchasing from their official website: KANEmusic.com, an obstruction that the band plans to remove when their potential second album is up for release. "We’re kind of in negotiations right now to move forward on a bigger level with our music," Steve says with enthusiasm although he is very quick not to divulge too much info on exactly what negotiations are taking place. "A couple of people have asked us while we have been here, ’When are you going to put out a second album?’ and we have enough material to put out a second album and we loved producing the first one ourselves but we kind of want to do it now on a level where we have big distribution and it can get out." Christian adds, "Because it can get to more people. You don’t have to go on-line; we’d like to see it at stores so everyone can have access to it. Whenever you have a successful album then you get to travel to where your fans are and we have fans in London, we have fans in Egypt, Vietnam and we have fans all over the world that buy our stuff." Christian then shouts over to the bands manager, Eric Griffin and asks,"Where is the weirdest place that someone has bought our album from?" Eric thinks for a second, "The Solomon Islands," comes the reply, "although I have no idea where that is!" he jokes.

THE NASHVILLE/L.A. TWO-STEP

The future for the band is looking good with plans to return to Nashville to write, record, and hopefully release a second album into mainstream circulation. Although, when given the chance, Christian will slip a little of KANE’s music into his acting pieces. A song the band wrote in Nashville appears in Crooked E: The Unshredded Truth about Enron and in the film Life or Something Like It, Christian’s character Cal can be heard singing "Sweet Carolina Rain" to himself whilst walking down a corridor. The only soundtrack appearance KANE is actually credited for however is in one of Christian’s most recent roles, Just Married, where the first song they ever wrote, "The Chase" can be heard playing in an Italian bar!

By the time of writing this feature, the secret will be out that during Season 5 Christian’s character Lindsey McDonald has actually returned to the Angel fold to wreak havoc on his old foe once more. Angel makeup artist Dayne Johnson created the extensively tattooed look of Eve’s (Sarah Thompson) new conspirator. Christian confessed during a recent Q&A session with Stephanie Romanov at the Senior Partners Convention, that he believes the reason Lindsay has returned is largely due to the fans and their constant requests and pleas to Joss Whedon to bring him back. After two years away from show Christian admits he feels like he never really left, "It always feels like coming home. I’m working with David, with James and I’ve known them for a while. I’ve known David for over seven years; we’ve been friends for a long, long time. So with him being there it was like slipping into an old suit. It was nice. It was very comforting." Unfortunately the recent news of Angel’s cancellation means that his return is all too brief and fleeting but there can be no doubt whatsoever that whatever fate life has in store for both Christian and Steve, these "spirit boys" will soar and be ever successful in whatever they choose to do. Christian’s latest film, Keep Your Distance, where he plays Sean Voight in a romantic thriller with Jennifer Westfeldt of Kissing Jessica Stein is currently in post-production. But fans can watch for him in an upcoming episode of Las Vegas, as Bob in "The Strange Life of Bob" airing April 19th and there’s more evil fun as Lindsey when Angel returns from hiatus, April 14th in "Underneath".

Watch With Kristin - Chat Transcript
Monday, March 22, 2004

Kristin: Almost didn’t think I was going to make it today, what with my computer being FROZEN all day thanks to you crazy Angel fans.

whoseygirl asks: Too many emails?

Kristin replies: Yeparooni. Seems I’ve been the target of an email campaign (among many other things) through www.savingangel.org. And were it any other show, I swear to you, I would annoyed. But how can I not love the love? The fight just goes on, and I must tell you, NEVER before have I seen such an all-out battle to bring back a series. To show my support (in addition to those letters I sent out my own self, don’t forget those!), I’m going to talk about Angel on E! News Live tomorrow. And .... well ... what else CAN I do?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
beebee asks: Got any good news about Angel?

Kristin replies: Oh, how I wish I did. I haven’t heard any promising rumblings from the networks. And I ran into David Boreanaz the other night at a charity event (the Genesis Awards presented by the Humane Society at the Beverly Hilton) , and he’s, well, he’s accepting that it’s time to move on…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
angllverhe21 asks: WHAT DID DAVID SAY?!!!

Kristin replies: Simmer down now, pup! He was a DOLL, actually. There with wife Jamie Bergman. Extremely sympathetic to we fans, but truth be told, I haven’t seen him looking so happy/ rested since the show began. Sleep becomes him! Anyway, here’s what he said about the cancellation:

"It's a bittersweet kind of thing, I feel bad for the fans because they have been so supportive throughout the years of the show and characters. But it's a real interesting time for me right now and I'm really looking forward to new challenges. It's a new transition for me. We're in a really good place so I feel really happy that the show is come full circle, but I do feel for the fans. The fans are so great, they’ve been so great to us. But it’s time to start a whole new journey.”

We didn’t have much time to chat, unfortunately (it was a charity event and he was being whisked away) but he did say what’s next for him. “You know,” he said with a big grin, “right now Jamie and I are going to take off to a beach. We are going to take a nap [starts chuckling and looking at Jamie]. A long nap and not worry about the alarm clock waking us up."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
smartassblond16 asks: IS Sarah Michelle Gellar coming on Angel

Kristin replies: We asked her precisely that at the end of an interview for Scooby Doo 2 over the weekend, and she literally said, “I don’t know” and got up and walked away. Hmph. Clearly she’s not at liberty to talk about it. Which I’m GUESSING, means she’s in.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
seba_88 asks: I'm hearing the Save Angel campaign hit CNN!! It's amazing!! The WB just can't turn down the show!!!!

Kristin replies: Really?? That's fantastic!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
milesfrom730 asks: If you are dying, will you at least tell me anything new on angel before you go?

Kristin replies: That's my tuber. Nice to see you have your priorities straight. Spike and Angel are headed to Rome, and we're going to see the Italian version of Wolfram & Hart. They're favorite holiday -- Chris-Mangia!! (I think we need to spread this, peeps.) And Ilyria is going to fool more than just Fred's parents -- also someone very close to her -- that she is Fred.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i_love_kristin asks: Omarosa is guesting on Angel in the final episode, she takes over Wolfram & Hart and is too evil to be contained, and everything explodes.

Kristin replies: If SMG doesn't come back, that's clearly the next best option.

"Она сказала "не знаю", встала и ушла". И Кристин полагает, чо это верный знак ее возвращения в шоу? Скорее уж - обиды, что ее больше не зовут...
Впрочем, я могу и ошибаться. Шоу-бизнес - странное место

Insider - Buffy's Angel Reunion Nixed
Thursday, March 25, 2004
By Michael Ausiello

Bloody hell! This bites! This sucks! Whichever vampire pun you choose to express your feelings on the subject, the sad fact remains: Sarah Michelle Gellar will not be resurrecting Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Angel's swan song after all. As foreshadowed in this week's issue of TV Guide magazine (on sale now), the in-demand actress' busy schedule was a deal-breaker. But that's only half of the story.

You see, Gellar wasn't asked to appear in the series finale, she was invited to return for the second-to-last episode (airing May 5). Unfortunately, when that hour was being shot, she was in Tokyo working on the supernatural horror film The Grudge and, obviously, quite unavailable. However, she was free to pick up stakes in the spin-off's capper (airing May 19). So why isn't she doing that installment? Executive producer Joss Whedon didn't want Angel's send-off to "revolve around a guest star," he says simply. "We will deal with the issue of Buffy and how much she means to Angel and Spike, but I want to end the show with the people who've been in the trenches together, the characters who have lived — and occasionally died — together... the regulars."

Whedon's Angel partner, Jeffrey Bell, adds that the idea of building the finale around the long-running Angel/Buffy/Spike love triangle "seemed to undermine the bigger picture. [So Gellar was left off the roster] in the same way that David Boreanaz wasn't involved in the series finale of Buffy." (Boreanaz did, however, appear in Buffy's penultimate episode.)

Before you start sharpening Mr. Pointy and aiming it at the execs' hearts, you should know that, despite their well-thought-out rationale, at the point when they learned Gellar was free to participate in Angel's last hurrah, it was too late for her to do so. "We had already written and shot the episode [for which we originally wanted her] which emotionally dealt with [the romantic rivalry]," Bell says. "So, to go [back] and force her into the very last episode to retread stuff that we already dealt with didn't make any sense.

"By the time it became a possibility," he goes on, "the ship had sort of sailed."

Fine. So, how then will this much-ballyhooed (by us) May 5 episode give closure to Angel, Spike and Buffy — not to mention Angel/Buffy and Spike/Buffy proponents — when the superheroine in the middle of the muddle will be nowhere to be seen? "Angel and Spike arrive at an understanding — that's all I'll say about that," Bell teases. "And without her being involved, Buffy's character has come to some sort of understanding, too."

After that, the vamp-dusting ghostbusters will forge forward toward their final showdown (a two-parter airing May 12 and 19). "We're gonna get to the bottom of why we've been in Wolfman & Hart this whole time and what we're gonna do about it," hints Bell. And, though he refuses to drop any clues as to who will be "left standing at the end," he does promise this: "It's gonna be big!" As Buffy might have replied, "Well, duh!"

Source: Dreamwatch #116

David Fury believes that money is firmly to blame for Angel's shock cancellation. "Angel is actually one of the cheaper one-hour dramas to produce and we do lot with a little," he says. "But it's still not as cheap as Seventh Heaven or reality programming."

Speaking just weeks after he told Dreamwatch of his delight at writing and directing Angel's 100th episode, You're Welcome, David Fury can barely contain his disappointment at The WB's decision to pull the plug on the show - especially considering the lengths he and his colleagues went in order to ensure Angel's fifth season met with the network's approval. Nevertheless, he feels that the show itself hasn't suffered one bit as a result of network interference.

"I honestly feel we haven't compromised the things we wanted to do. We're not so arc intensive. The network wanted to see more stand-alones and we did that, again without compromise, and we were able to subtly lay in an arc. We are very proud of this season. The show changes but it is still true to itself. There are so many avenues to play and I think we've been able to show that.

"We always had an ending for this season that we always knew would make a great series ending," he continues. "Angel's potential cancellation has hovered over the show from the very beginning. This season in particular was so touch-and-go to get picked up that we knew whatever the ending we would do, it would have to satisfy both ends and I think we've managed to do that.

"Now that it's definitive and we know it's the end, we may take more care to wrap up more loose ends. But for the most part, the are and the grand scheme of it are on course."

How did you feel when you found out that Angel's fifth season would be its last?

I think everyone was just surprised that it happened. I actually saw Joss [Whedon] the day that he found out. I'd gone over and we got some lunch and he said, "I'm going to dinner with [WB President] Jordan Levin tonight," and I said, '"Oh, well call me if the show gets cancelled or something." And he was like, "That's not gonna happen! We're doing the best we've ever done." And then he called me later to tell me we'd got cancelled! We were totally joking about it, especially as he'd just told me his whole plan for next year. He had all these really cool ideas for the next season.

Do you have anything lined up yet for after Angel?

Not yet. I'm trying to get back into looking at other roles after not auditioning for three years. It's a little weird at the moment, so I am just going to see what happens.

What will you miss most about working on Angel?

The people. One of the sad parts about the show not getting picked up was that these people are just like my family now. I mean, I see them as much as anyone, and everyone's seen each other in the worst and best light. So it'll be weird and very sad not to have these people around all the time.

В журнале было специальное приложение “The Sexiest sci-fi Stars in The Galaxy 2004”, финалисты без очередности.
Angel “Home”
BtvS “Chosen”
BtvS “LMPTM”
BtvS “Storyteller”
Firefly “Out of Gas”

Extract from For Whom the Bell Tolls - Jeff Bell - Dreamwatch #116 May 2004

"We didn't know it was coming," reveals Bell. "Joss had told me earlier that he was going to try and get The WB to commit early so we would know. Last year, we didn't find out about renewal until almost May. I was left trying to keep all my great writers from taking other jobs, which was hard. As it turns out, they all took a lot less money to stay so we didn't want that to happen again."
Fifth Ammendments

Angel's cancellation was particularly surprising given that the show's writers had successfully implemented the changes demanded by The WB at the end of Angel's fourth year. At the network's request, season five brought a lighter tone, more stand-alone storylines and the introduction of former Buffy regular James Marsters as Spike.

"The big difference between last year and this year was that season four was based around one decision: "Let's host an apocalypse,'" notes Bell. "This year, we started out differently, both because we wanted to make the network happy and because we wanted to tell a lot of different stories. All that meant was that we started from scratch a lot more and we've been trying to balance the emotional arc of our characters and keep it alive and powerful within each episode. We find ourselves occassionally goig, 'What's this next one about?' in a way we didn't last year. We've been backed into corners more and we've been really coming out with strong ideas, which has been fun for me.

"We have been pushing things this season," he continues. "We had Lorne's party, we had Mexican Wrestlers, we went back in time to see how Angel and Spike met, we went on a Nazi submarine, we turned Angel into a puppet and we bought back Charisma [Carpenter] as Cordelia. You sometimes think, 'OK, we are jumping the shark with this episode,' and instead it becomes one of your favourites. The submarine episode, 1943, turned out to be really cool and surprising and wonderful, and turning Angel into a puppet in Smile Time was hilarious. The puppet they built for Angel was just brilliant.

"In terms of tone, we've been trying to mix it up every time this year. We've tried to make sure we never do the same thing twice and I've been really happy with that."

Bell admits that his greatest headache during season five was caused by The WB's decision to cut the show's budget. "In teh past, there was a little bit of room in other places to borrow from, but this year everyone is maxed out. It's been really tricky and we've had to struggle. We've had to choose fights and special effects more carefully this season. Having said that, we have writers and crew who could make a lot more money on other shows, but they all love the show. I think every penny we are givven ends up on the screen somehow."

On the plus side, Bell has no problems integrating Spike into the series. "In terms of bringing Spike back, I think we have been very true to his nature," he says. "The great thing about Spike is that he isn't the brightest crayon in the box, but he has an amazing heart and instinct. Angel over-thinks everything. Spike doesn't really take the time to think much about at all, which is why they are always butting heads, and we try to play on that.

"We've tried to write Spike as Angel's ner'do'well brother. Angel does something and Spike wants to do it too, which annoys the Hell out of the older brother and the younger brother doesn't realise that he's doing it. We like that dynamic, and we also like the heart that Spike and Fred [Amy Acker] had together. It wasn't a hardcore sexual thing, but there was caring for one another there and we liked that.

"I know there is a faction of fans who want the reformed, 'Mr Romantic Season Seven of Buffy Spike'," he continues, "But he was like that because he was in a relationship with a woman who inspired him to be like that. It's not that he's changed or we've forgotten that, it's just that he hasn't been put in the circumstances yet where you have seen just that side."

The Final Countdown

While Bell obviously feels disappointed that Angel won't live on to another season, he remains very grateful that the network announced its decision to cancel the series early enough to allow the writers and producers to think of a way to end the show in style.

"I'm hoping we get one last stand-alone before the end to have some fun, because we won't get the chance to do it again," says Bell of his last wish for the series. "As much as parts of it will set up the finale, I'm also hoping to infect it with some fun. I was thinking of doing a Spike and Andrew [Tom Lenk] road trip episode. If we can make it work, we will."

As for the grand finale itself, Jeffrey Bell is giving nothing away except to reveal that it will be he and not Joss Whedon who will write - and possibly direct - the last ever episode.

"It's exciting and terrifying because you want to please your boss," he admits with a grin. "But Joss will be very involved and he has some specific ideas of what he wants it to be."

The ship sailed with only Spangel on board!
Bangel's ship was called the Titanic!
