Ok, so it doesn’t actually qualify as the apocalypse, but I checked out the please-please-let-it-be-true gossip on whether a Spike movie was actually in the offing, and highly placed sources in the TV industry say "Not even!" Just wanted to let all the chosen out there know, so none of us got our hopes up and our spirits all crushed or anything. Sigh.
I’ll post any new 411 on the Buffy musical here as soon as I hear it....But in the meanwhile, who can identify where that dialogue I quoted at the top of this blog comes from? Go ahead. Show off. You know you want to. ****

Marti Noxon, executive producer of UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer in its last seasons, told SCI FI Wire that the popular series' characters may live on in direct-to-DVD movies. "There are serious discussions going on about bringing some of the characters back and making a few movies that will go straight to DVD, but they will certainly be the quality they have always been," Noxon said in an interview. Continued fan interest in a big-budget Buffy film has led creator Joss Whedon to consider a series of movies that would focus on some of the secondary characters, she added.
"Joss is the king of jumping mediums, so it is an obvious step for him to do this," Noxon said. She said that a few of the show's past writers, such as Drew Goddard, have been contacted about turning in script ideas that would center on the minor characters. But Noxon said that she doubts that star Sarah Michelle Gellar would reprise her role as Buffy and added that she thought it might be tough to persuade Alyson Hannigan to return as Willow. Both Gellar and Hannigan have moved on to film roles, and Hannigan is now a regular on the hit CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
But Noxon said that a film centered on James Marsters' Spike or David Boreanaz's Angel could do very well. (Marsters currently has a recurring role on The WB's Smallville, while Boreanaz is a regular on Fox's Bones.)
At the moment, Noxon said she isn't involved in writing any of the DVD movie scripts, but that she could be in the future. (Noxon is currently a consulting producer on Fox's Prison Break.) "If I get involved it would be for the Buffy-related films, not Angel, because I'm far more plugged into Buffy," she said.

Ah, the good old days, back when Joss Whedon wasn’t calling my editorials hate bombs. Back then I interviewed him for Serenity, and one of the questions I asked was about the future of the Buffyverse. I reasoned that most fans had come to Firefly, the show that Serenity was based on, through the DVD box set. To them that was a direct to DVD show. Why not continue Buffy stories that way – which would allow you to go beyond what TV censors would allow without having to worry about pleasing the big audience of a theatrical movie.
Whedon was impressed – I was the first person who had said that to him. He confirmed that talks were in progress to do just that, and that he didn’t want to spill the beans yet, so I agreed to not run that part of the interview. I guess the beans are spilled, though – Marti Noxon told SciFi Wire "There are serious discussions going on about bringing some of the characters back and making a few movies that will go straight to DVD, but they will certainly be the quality they have always been.”

(Writer’s note: for the non-geeks out there, that would be any events going on within the worlds created for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”) What’s the truth on that?
JW: The truth on that is, it’s an idea that’s being floated, and we’re waiting to see if we can make it viable. I’ve got my fingers crossed. It could be a really cool idea.

THE SKINNY: Well, Joss Whedon has said he would like to do a SPIKE made for TV movie spin-off from his BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER/ANGEL series and today the WB press tour, Entertainment President David Janollari revealed that they would like to see a SPIKE movie too.
"We would love to do a SPIKE movie with Joss Whedon," says Janollari. "Joss Whedon is fast becoming a big-feature filmmaker. He's currently working on an adaptation of WONDER WOMAN for Warner Bros. He's simply just not been available to us. But he knows and you guys all know, the door is open any time that he wants to do that -- for us to do that movie. We're thankful that James Marsters is on SMALLVILLE this year, keeping him alive on our network."

Spike Fans Rejoice - WB Eager For New Vampire Tale
According to the SciFi Channel, David Janollari, president of entertainment at The WB, told reporters that the network is eager to air a movie based on the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" character of Spike - played by James Marsters - if creator Joss Whedon becomes available.
"We'd ... love to do a Spike movie with Joss Whedon," Janollari said in a news conference at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif.
Just one problem - the "Firefly" / "Serenity" director is already helming two large feature film projects. Whedon is currently working on an adaptation of "Wonder Woman" for Warner Brothers and the supernatural tale "Goners" for Universal. According to Janollari, however, "the door is open any time" that Joss decides to do a Spike film.
In the meantime, Marsters, who played the vampire character in both "Buffy" and its WB spin-off series, "Angel," has a recurring role on The WB's Superman series "Smallville." Audiences last saw Spike as he was taking up arms with Angel against the armies of hell in the "Angel" series finale in May of 2004.
Despite the deafening sound of the Browncoats (fans of the "Firefly" 'verse) crying out for more adventures with the Serenity crew (yes, I'm one of those folks), Whedon has said that he's interested in returning to the Buffyverse with a TV movie at some point.
For his part, Marsters has expressed interest if the film can come together before he's "too old" to play the supposedly ageless vampire. Heh. Now that's just what you'd expect him to say. In my opinion, it was Spike who kept both "Buffy" and "Angel" from getting stale in their final seasons. His torrid romance with Buffy and his incessant jabs at Angel always made for great dialog. If a Spike movie is made - with both Marsters and Whedon - I'll undoubtedly watch. --Shannon Nolley

(May 15 2006) - When “Angel” was cancelled after its fifth season, the show ended with a cliff-hanger as Team Angel prepared to go head to head with a massive hoard of demons in an epic confrontation. Since then, however, there have been rumors of a revival for the series -- stories of a possible sixth season, a tele-movie and there has also the idea of other spin-off projects. But nothing has been confirmed as getting the go ahead. Well, speaking to fans in London this weekend (including SyFy Portal’s Alan Stanley Blair), actress Amy Acker shed some light on the status of the proposed project. “I think its safe to say that’s not happening anymore,” Acker told fans at the Starfury event, “'cause if they were, they’d be getting done right now. There was supposed to be three of them –- one for Spike, a Faith one and also one for Willow. I think it's safe to say that now because its not going to happen.”
But unlike many other shows that bite the dust, interest in the resurrection was not the problem as thanks to the various websites and the Save Angel campaign, the show proved it had a loyal following. Instead, Acker said, the projects never took off because “Fox couldn’t get it together the way Joss wanted to do them.”
Although Acker didn’t go into details about the difference in approaches between Fox and Whedon, the actress did give away some vital information as to what the plot could have been had they gone ahead or had there been a sixth season.
“I think it’s okay to say this now, since its not happening, but I think J (who plays Charles Gunn) was to be evil in it.” she said. “He was to become a vampire really early on in this really big battle.”
Actor J August Richards, who was also at the event, quickly confirmed that was the direction he always pictured character going.

We point out that we are only a vocal minority, that there are a legion of quieter fans not sending postcards who would snap up such a film.
*We know a date: Send on or about June 20, 2006 so they will arrive by Joss Whedon's Birthday on June 23rd.
The more postcards arriving at the same time, the bigger the impact.
