Marti Noxon: One thing that Joss and I talked about quite a bit was if Tara and Willow got together could we make it a real relationship and not break them up in six weeks and have y'know Willow going like (wipes her mouth) 'bleargh' y'know, "I liked it but not that much, I'm still straight." Y'know, like she's going to be a lesbian.

Alyson Hannigan: I definitely thank Joss for that, he really made sure that when putting two women together it wasn't going to be something that was a cheap little exploitive sort of romp of two girls you know. He really, really cared about the relationship and it wasn't about two women it was about two people who really love each other.

Joss Whedon: The episode "Family" with the two of them dancing in the air could be the closest to my heart. I mean the end is just y'know breaks me up enormously, I mean not in a laughing way, more with the crying.

Danny Strong: Her relationship with Spike was fantastic because there was an ambiguity there, we don't really know what we're rooting for. She doesn't know what she wants out of it. She feels like she's using him for sex. It was a very grown up relationship and that matched her arc at that point in the show.

Jane Espenson: Spike's relationship with Buffy was very explicitly about her needing to feel this connection to the world, needing to feel something. It was the wrong reason to have sex.

Marti Noxon: I think when we saw him die at the end of the series, he was transcending y'know he had really given in to the best part of himself and that was because he really loved her.

Marti Noxon: Whether she really loved him or not, was a big area of debate for us we'd go back and forth going 'what, what kind of love is this'.
Jane Espenson: Her figuring out who you are as Buffy as seperable from the slayer is this huge task and at the end of the series she's realising she's just starting that job of figuring who Buffy is.

David Greenwalt: Buffy is a gunslinger and a gunslinger can never really settle down so Buffy has a thing sort of built into her character and vocation that means probably not going to settle down, get married and have babies.

Drew Z Greenberg: Everybody has that experience. And a lot of times that has to do with the relationships we're in with the people we're interested in. And I love that this show sort of said we all go through that, everybody has a weird crush <Willow and Xander kissing (Lovers Walk)> from time to time, everybody gets into a relationship that isn't the healthiest and put it right up there and say not only is it normal to have that kind of relationship but you can survive it.
