When we looked at our schedule, with Charmed, 7th Heaven, Gilmore Girls, Angel and Smallville, we realized we had a lot of veteran series. And one of the challenges of any schedule is to let your veterans retire so you can make room for the rookies, like Jack and Bobby and The Mountain. It's a balancing act, and it's not fun. That was a sad day."

Joss Whedon's Next Project: Astonishing X-Men Comic Books

Two years ago, writer-director Joss Whedon had three shows on the air: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly. Then came the cancellations. But even as the television networks began presenting their latest slate of reality vaudeville and Law & Order spinoffs, Whedon was busy planning his next project: not a TV pilot but a year’s worth of a comic book, Marvel’s Astonishing X-Men.
“Superheroes are one of the central myths of the twentieth century,” Whedon says. “People in comics knew this so long ago, they completely deconstructed the superhero and built it up again.” Whedon seems to be doing a bit of the same to his own career path. Granted, he’s hardly the first cultural figure to draw from the comics: Michael Chabon won the Pulitzer for The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay; the characters in Jonathan Lethem’s books keep acquiring superpowers. But Whedon may be the first television executive producer to take on the task of writing comic books for a niche audience—an unusual gambit, but one that comes naturally to a creator who thinks of himself as a geek who made good.
As every fanboy knows, comics have long since grown up from their juvenile origins, taking on a self-consciousness that could give Dave Eggers a run for his money. But the trend seems to be moving back to pure storytelling. Whedon’s predecessor on X-Men is scripter Grant Morrison, who spent years on comics like Animal Man, taking a third-rate DC superhero and giving him the uncomfortable awareness that he was a fictional character; more recently, however, he has shifted toward writing cracking-good yarns. Whedon has settled on a similar back-to-basics approach. “I’m an old-fashioned storyteller to the point where I’m almost pedantic in my structure and moralism,” he says. “I don’t need to destroy the myth; all I want to do is make people care about these characters.”

For Whedon’s first issue, drawn by John Cassaday, school’s back in session at Xavier’s mutant institute up in Westchester. This means skintight yellow-and-blue costumes, the revival of the Cyclops-Wolverine rivalry—which continues despite the death of Jean Grey, their mutual object of desire—and Whedon’s trademark references to pop culture (“Did I miss the sorting hat?”). It also marks the return of the long-absent mutant Kitty Pryde, who was one of the first overtly Jewish superheroes when she debuted back in 1980. “If there’s a bigger influence on Buffy than Kitty, I don’t know what it was,” Whedon says. “She was an adolescent girl finding out she has great power and dealing with it.”
In fact, all of Whedon’s TV work bears the stamp of the X books, and not just because many of his stars are, like X-Men’s mutants, teenagers with unusual powers. When Whedon tried to write a show with a single brooding lead, the Buffy-spinoff Angel, the attempt fell flat—but once he surrounded the titular character with a team of misfit heroes, the series began to sparkle. Both Marvel’s world and the Buffyverse are built on potent supernatural metaphors: X-Men’s mutant gene suggests both racial difference and adolescence; Whedon’s version of witchcraft is linked to both lesbianism and addiction (sometimes, messily, both at once).
But if Whedon himself views his project as a natural extension of his TV work, the printed page clearly provides at least one major advantage for the creator: a genre-friendly readership, guaranteed to stay the course. “In this weird way, TV’s become like the movie industry,” Whedon says. “It’s all about the opening weekend—there’s no such thing as a slow build. I don’t think that’s a healthy way to run a business.” So Whedon is stepping away from the small screen for at least the next year, spending his days working on his other major project: a movie version of Firefly, the doomed sci-fi Western that he created for Fox, only to have his space vessel swamped by a wave of reality programming. (Called Serenity, and starring the original cast of the TV series, the film goes into production this month.)
But he’s spending his nights with the X-Men. Was this shift prompted by a desire to avoid repressive notes from network-TV executives? “Actually, there’s more people looking over my shoulder with the comics. I have to be careful: Nobody curses, nobody smokes, I can’t show skin,” Whedon says. “I mean, did you ever see Buffy? It was dirty.”

During the shooting of episodes, mistakes inevitably happen, and some of these make it to the final cut. Here is a short list of some of those errors.
• In "Bad Girls" the stunt double's face is seen close up during a fight scene between Buffy and some vampires.
• In "Inca Mummy Girl (2.4)", the mummified corpse in the chest seemingly turns itself around.
• In "Anne", Buffy runs through "Hell" being chased by demons. She starts out wearing running shoes. They change to canvas sneakers and back to running shoes again during the chase. As she climbs the top of the ladder they are different shoes altogether.
• In "Innocence", the judge bursts into flame before the missile actually strikes him.
• Angel's reflection is seen in various episodes, even though we are frequently told that vampires don't have reflections.
• In "The Witch", Cordelia gets out of the Driver's Ed car and shuts the door. In the next scene, the door is open, and when the truck hits it, it slams the door shut, although the door was, as far as we have seen, already shut.
• In numerous episodes, we can see that the pages of books the characters flip through for information on various demons are blank. However, we later learn that there are some reference books that are blank which summon information when a few choice words are spoken.
• Boom and operator visible standing in the wood in "This Year's Girl" when Buffy, Xander and Willow find a demon that Adam's dissected.
• During "Villains", when Willow is walking through the forest tracking Warren, ropes can be seen pulling the trees back as she walks by.
• In "The Dark Age", Ethan uses Sulfuric Acid to burn a tattoo off of his arm. The steam comes off of his arm before any liquid leaves the bottle, though.
• In "Bargaining (1)", Willow, Xander, Anya and Tara change their relative positions between shots when they're performing the spell at Buffy's grave.
• In the episode "Earshot", Buffy looks up at the clock tower and it says the time is 12:40. She then runs a few metres and looks up again. The time is now 12:10.
• In "Teachers Pet" Season One, Buffy finds the science teachers glasses on the floor, and she puts them on the table. In one shot she places them with the legs folded out, and then in the close-up, the legs are folded in.
• In "Phases" (Season Two), Giles is in the library, and his glasses repeatedly disappear and reappear between shots .
• In "Phases" (Season Two), Willow is running away from Oz (as the werewolf) through the woods. She falls over and her dungarees get muddy. In the ensuing shots, the mud on her trousers repeatedly appears and disappears.
• In season 1's "Prophecy Girl" when Buffy goes down to stop the Master, he kills her and throws her into some water. She lands with her arms underneath her and her hair tied in a ponytail. When Angel and Xander find her, her hair is loose and she has her arms out to her sides.
• In the series finale "Chosen", Buffy's footwear changes from shoes to boots when she jumps off the bus onto the road.
• In "Normal Again" (Season 6), Buffy ties up Dawn in the basement and gags her with a piece of tape. When Tara unties Dawn later in the episode, Dawn's gag has disappeared.
• In the episode "What's My Line, Part I", one of the assassins of the Order of Taraka is shown getting off a bus. In a wide shot, the steps are one color with signs reading "Watch your step". In the close up, the steps change color and the signs are missing.
• During "The Witch," while Buffy, Willow and Xander are in the lab making the witch revealing potion, Willow pours the finalized mixture into a test tube and fills the tube to the top. When Buffy takes the tube, it is barely a 1/4 full.
• In the episode "I Robot, You Jane," we see Buffy's school records. Her birthdate changes from October 24th 1980 to May 6th, 1979 between shots. According to the rest of the series, she was born in January of 1981. Her GPA and classification also change from shot to shot.
• In "Once More, With Feeling", the demons that Buffy kills in the Bronze disappear and reappear, and change positions, between shots as she dances.
• In "Once More With Feeling", during "I'll Never Tell" the chairs change position randomly during the dance sequence in Anya and Xander's apartment.
More mistakes will follow!

I just finished writing my syndicated column on Buffy and Angel and I just posted that stuff about how emails get into the Corner and I get the following email from a former producer of Angel:
Jonah, I note sadly and with great dejection that my e-mail to you of 5/21 has gone unread. I whine. And I reproduce it for you here (it was regarding your musing that "Angel" might have some, um, afterlife):
Yes, Jonah, you're wrong. There's no plan nor hope that another network is gonna pick up "Angel." David went blonde and James shaved his head. Wow. Must really be The End. And I speak with some inside info, having written and produced "Angel" for four years with Joss, along with several fantabulous episodes of "Firefly." (though I wasn't on "Angel" this last season, as I was busy getting cancelled all over again on Fox with "Wonderfalls.")
Joss ended "Angel" the way he did because "fighting the good fight" and how "there is no big win" was always the mission statement of "Angel." The fight goes on. It's a series of battles, small and large. And a series of series cancellations if you happen to be on Fox on Friday nights, I might add. But I digress. And if the finale seemed rushed, it's probably because every episode of every season is rushed. <
That said, I wanted to chime in on the Vamps-Shouldn't-Photograph thing. Mostly because I'm supposed to be writing and this seemed like time better spent. Anyway! I notice that a reader wrote to you:
"It has been established within the Whedon-verse that you can photograph a vampire. On an episode of ANGEL, Cordelia and Angel are looking at an old photo with Angel in it. Cordy remarks, "So vampires DO photograph. The just don't photograph WELL."
The scene was actually between Cordy and Wesley. Yes, I'm a geek, but I also wrote that scene and that line. I tried to explain this seeming problem in an earlier episode by having Angel explain re: why he turns up on film: "It's not physics, it's metaphysics." Sadly, that line was cut (shot, but cut) because the episode was nine minutes over in its first assemblage. So I suppose that doesn't count.
However we were not inconsistent: In fact, Angel could not be photographed before we wrote that he'd show up on film. (Hey, if it works for some pols, should work for a TV writer who's just tryin' to spin a yarn, yes?)
